So I'm wondering what everyone's favorite type of apple is and why.  I used to be strictly a granny smith girl, as I loved the tartness and crunch. Then this summer I discovered all new apples like macouns and empires (my summer favs). but when winter came around, I found myself craving a sweeter, mealier apple. So right now my ultimate fave is a BIG red rome apple. Anybody else?

Fuji apples! They are big, crunchy and really sweet.

#1 Honey Crisp -sweet & just-right texture of flesh

#2 Macintosh - small and the flesh is PERFECTION - this is what I grew up on.  If you can get the Michigan apples from Old Orchard or a West Michigan orchard.

#3 Gala - this is a second place favorite when I can't get a Honey Crisp.

First of all, I officially love this website now, because of this post. It is so refreshing to see that other people love things like apples as much as I do!

For a long time, my favorites were Macintosh apples, hands down. There is something about the consistency of the skin, and the very unique flavor that had me buying them everytime.

Lately, however, I have been really into Fujis. I think they have a really satisfying texture and there is so much juice in there, it's unbelievable! And they are just the right amount of sweet, in my opinion.

As a sidenote, if you ever want to taste something different and exciting when it comes to apples, try a Jazz apple. They are small (at least the ones I've had are) and are a new type of apple from New Zeland, a crossbreed between Galas and Braeburns. SO delicious. I haven't seen any in a while at my Trader Joe's, but if you come across any, you really must try one.

Happy apple eating,

Kelsea

Jazz apples are phenomenal.

OK I see your honeycrisp point--however, they STINK now!!! They were soooo good this summer and now they have no sweetness left (i think the flash freezing makes them bad) :(

I love a good mac as well. Im telling you guys though, try a rome. you may find heaven in a winter aple.

And folk: I am obsessed with apples. I can eat upwards of 6 a day, though I try to stay 4 or under :) But bring me to a farmers market in the summer and Im a gonner.

Our local ambrosia apples are in & amazing.

Oh I feel you there. Farmer's markets = fresh produce-induced coma. The very best kind, of course.

Jazz I have not heard of - sounds like I must try one!

Romes I have heard are good - I just can't pass up a "sure thing" I guess to branch out too much, hahaha.

Golden delicious - I don't know why ; because..um, it's green..and...yummie :D

I used to hate apples until i tryed a macintosh and it was so yum:]!! Its just some thing about how they taste kind of sweet but not too sweet, and crunchy but soft at the same time haha, there my favorite though.

I've noticed that Washington brand Honeycrisp apples stink in the winter time too! But if you can find the "Honey Bear" Honeycrisp apples, they are still good. Washington apple's farms are so over grown, that if you can find 'off brand' apples, they just tend to be sweeter and jucier. I've been doing my research to find all this out! So this winter, the ONLY good apples I can find are the Honeycrisp, and the only place I can find them is SUPER target, or some Safeway grocery stores. Year around, my apple is the Gala. mmm. But right now, forget about it. I miss the summer. I miss my fruit :( And living in AZ, there are hardly any farmers markets.

Jonagolds- wow! when they are still hard and ripe.  And fantastic to make home made applesauce from when they go soft.  Then there are gravensteins for pie and sauce and the Transparents are tops for pie and just eating when you are craving something kind of tart.  I had a red King apple once that I'd give a lot of money for but haven't seen in years.

Honeycrips and Pinklady-Sweet, cruncy and tart.

Yes! I love Jonagolds - it's the kind they grow and sell most over here, and I grew up on them haha.
I love Pink Lady apples too, or a nice tart Cox Orange (especially for making apple sauce or baking).

Jonagolds - Recently discovered only because they were the cheapest apples available but they are so juicy and nice

Gala Apples - Just love them

Golden Delicious ----no others for me!

Fuji is the apple for me - I love the things.

I first tried honeycrisps this past fall, and while they were wonderful, I still love fuji better.

And I like galas when I can't get a hold of the above two.

My favorite apples are Red Rome and yellow delicious. For a real treat I dip them into a tablespoon of fat free caramel dip.

Honeycrisp and Pink Ladies - they're the most expensive, but they're so sweet-tart and delicious that I think the extra cost is worth it.

I had a honeykrisp for the first time this week and almost died, it was so good! I was shocked!

Other than that, I like Pink Lady apples, and Grapples.

star: thanks for the tip on honeycrisps...im gonna try the super target by me for them!!!

freshbaked: i am trying an ambrosia apple for the first time as we speak. it is nice, almost like a honeycrisp but not AS sweet or juicy. me like!! where are they local? im from NY, and we just got a shipemnt in at whole foods, but from where??

poet: mmm jonagolds. i used to get those at the market this summer, but sadly NO store near me stocks them in winter. never heard of a gravestein, mmm

kat: where are u from that jonagolda are grown near you? our local apples are really empires and macouns. meh

shelly: pink lady are phenomenal, you're right. for some reason i got off that kick, maybe i shoudl restart!

novileigh: omg you tried the grapple!!! is it really good? i feel almost bad eating it because its not natural, but at the same time, i freakin love grapes and apples, i guess i must try it :)

PS. i am so happy so many people share the apple passion. my family thinks im crazy but apparently im normal (at least in cc world!)
