What is your favorite workout/exercise/health book?
I'm interested in hearing about your favorite or most useful health related book. Why is it your favorite? Do you recommend it to others? Has it helped motivate or inspire you? How did you hear about it?
Or, just the title of the book if that is all you feel like mentioning right now.
"Skinny Bitch" by Freedman and Barnouin
This book promotes a vegan lifestyle, and while I don't adhere to this ideology, this book got me to seriously review what kind of food I was putting into my body.
"Stop the Insanity" by Powter (ignore all the press. it took two years for what she said to sink in but she got me off my ass)
"Astro Fit" by William Evans. Excellent book.
Thank you for these...I'm compiling a list of books to look over at the library.

I live and die by this book and would highly recommend it.
First half is written by Liz Pearson and nutritionist, she talks about super good foods and explains in normal terms why they are good for you.
Second half is written by Mairlyn Smith a Chef, she takes all of what Liz has said and puts them into amazing easy recipes. my favs include, honey mustard chicken, the big breakfast cookie that has 4 grams of fibre, and the 120 cal chocolate brownie!!
Well worth the money, my copy has food stains all over it and tabs sticking out for my fav recipes.
***** stars!
Change One
It was a reader's digest sponsored book, so I'm not sure who the author actually is. it's a book that teaches living a healthy lifestyle by changing one thing a week for 12 weeks -- it includes cutting calories, food shopping, exercising, and maintenance. It also has recipes!
It changed my life pretty effectively 2 years ago and helped me to lose 47 pounds.
good luck!
"Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle" by Tom Venuto
It's actually an eBook, and i've found it enormously helpfull. Found through an online add while browsing nutrition websites.
It focuses on fat loss through a combination of cardio, weight training and proper nutrition.
Highly recommended!
Humpty Dumpty great story and a great lesson.
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. it's a thriller the suspense.
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. Now we have a tragedy.
sorry my son just told me you looking for books on working out. My bad ![]()
"The Body Sculpting Bible for Men" They also have one for women
"Weight Training Workouts that Work" Volume two
"The Lean Body Promise"
I also like Bodybuilding.com
Testosteronenation.com
both sites are for both men and women.
All the kings horses and all the kings men couldn't put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
Never Surrender, Never give up
I am not on a diet, I am changing my life style
The Biggest Loser book has been a HUGE inspiration to me. It has all the people from the first two seasons sharing the reasons why they were overweight and what enabled them. Then . .how they overcame it. The eating plan is a sensible one. Trying to lose as much weight as they do on the show so quickly is almost impossible to do in a home setting. They adhere to strict diets of low carbs and high protein which anyone can do BUT they work out from 4 to 6 hours a day while on the ranch!! Yikes! Who has time for that!?? But if you follow their advice you can do it gradually.
One thing I learned from the book--did you know it takes 3500 burned calories to lose 1 pound?? Interesting. . . . .
I even learned we are all part of a demographic called LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability if I recall correctly). Food marketers love us folks trying to be healthy and do try to bamboozle us on occasion. We are a great source of revenue to them! I didn't know Cascadian Farms was owned by Pepsi!!!!
'French Women Don't Get Fat' by Mireille Guiliano: Her writing is easy to read, her own story is interesting and there's lots of really good usable info. It inspired me to eat more like the french. I don't buy prepared food, I make my own dressings/sauces, try to eat what's in season, etc. To be mindful of what I put in my body, but enjoy good food.
'You On A Diet' by Dr's Roizen and Oz (of Oprah fame): Goes thru the entire eating process in plain english (appetite, metabolism, emotions, etc.) and then gives you a workable plan (food, activity plan, diet myths, etc.) to reduce your waistline and get fit. Their theory (proven by recent medical studies) is that a person's waist measurement is a better indicator of potential life threatening conditions rather than one's overall weight (due to visceral fat and the omentum among other things). It's a really sensible and informative book. The funny pictures show they don't take themselves too seriously and you can tell they tried to make it a fun book to read.
I think "Five Factor Fitness" is a fantastic, easy-to-follow book. It's a 5-week program (but you can continue to do it), and it addresses both diet and exercise.
The diet suggestions make sense - I've never been able to follow a diet for long since I love food so much, but my husband and I were able to follow this one. We looked forward to our weekly "cheat day," and within a couple of weeks, the one day where we ate anything we wanted had NO effect on weight loss efforts (I won't go into detail here, but our bodies apparently didn't feel the need to hang on to all the fat we consumed on those days).
As for the exercise portion, the only equipment you need are a couple of sets of dumbbells, and a way to get in about 10 minutes of cardio (you can do more if you want). It's created to take 30 minutes or less per day for 5 days per week (come on, I know you can find 30 minutes...). I had no idea I could get a flat stomach!! Not only flat, but toned, and it didn't take a heckuva lot of work either!
You can do it! (And don't be afraid of weights - I used to do a lot of cardio, but when I hit a plateau, a trainer nudged me hard to start using weights. I didn't lose any weight for awhile--it's difficult to stay motivated during that time but stick with it--once I had built up some muscle, it started FALLING off and I lost 30 pounds.) Good luck!
i am loving "The Eat-Clean Diet Workout" by Tosca Reno (a canadian gal yay!). i have not read her other books, and this is a pretty basic and simplistic approach, but she is easy to read, has great form and it is a good book to flip through for muscle targets and different moves. it is also a great book to lend out.
