Favourite UK diet foods

Quote  |  Reply

I just moved to England a couple of weeks ago and am finding it difficult not being familiar with the brands over here.  So my question for people in the UK is, what are your favourite low fat or low calorie diet (or regular) products?  Some ideas on what's good and what to avoid would be appreciated greatly!

Thanks!

Weight Watchers Double Chocolate Brownie desserts...in the frozen section.  They are to DIE for.  Special K Bliss is good too.
Things I seem to buy a lot which are relatively low in calorie are

Ryvita (40kcal a slice), put something on top of it and yum :).
Also, Robinsons fruit squash :). A nice low calorie way to make water taste better.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head, there are millions of  things out there. I tend to stay away from the advertised diet foods not because they're bad, but because I'm a skint student and can't afford them. Just keep your eyes peeled and I'm sure you'll be fine :).

hehe i cant STAND Weetabix!!!

The WW double choc brownies sound awesome! I will have to check them out when i am having a chocolate craving!

The water here tastes different than im used to, so the Robinsons squash might be a good thing to check out.

Thanks guys! More suggestions would be great!

If the water where you are isn't so great, you might want to consider getting a brita filter or something for it.

If you are looking for lunch meals and stuff Boots has a range of lunch time options that are designed for those watching thier weight.

I find that there are actually quite alot of options in the UK, and now they have started with the red/orange/green food labels so you what the levels of various aspects of the food is like, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out what is good.

PS if you are looking for something to ruin your diet, the frozen pavalovas from sainsbury's with toffee is really great and pretty good value.

mostly everything made by weight watchers is nice and healthy.

Tesco healthy living products are good to and because that overs all areas of food groups your not really limiting your choice of food.

'Nimble' bread is low cal and very yummy too.

Tesco and Asda both have AMAZING low calorie desserts, snacks and meals in the 'healthy living' sections.

they have nice little chocolate sundaes and stuff like that with like 3gms fat and 130 calories.

:) they dont artificially sweeten them either :D!

OHHHH! and the water thing, i moved from scotland to england last year and i noticed how hard and gritty it was!

i don't really think about specific products, but at lunchtimes when you're out, there really are lots of options at chains like Eat and Pret a Manger, where you can get sushi, soups, and lower-fat sandwiches.

The leading supermarkets (Tesco's, Sainsbury's M&S, Waitrose) also do low-fat single serving lunchy things (sandwiches, salads) - some Waitroses and Sainsbury's have hot counters too.

You can luck out with local japanese/thai restos, but i'm afraid that outside of that it's all about the butter/mayo.

Packaged sandwiches you will get to know IF ONLY BECAUSE YOU CAN'T AVOID THEM - chicken tikka, tuna salad (standard comes with CORN), crayfish and mayo, chicken and avocado, egg and watercress.

Things to RUN FROM:

Brits love a morning fry-up and you'll have to hide from bacon rolls at diner-type places (there are white chippie vans sometimes, that you need to steer clear of).

Oh god, yes... fried fish and chips, with mushy peas. stay aWAY. In some places (most people will say this happens up north and in places like scotland) people will fry anything. Deep fried mars bars. "Chip butties" are french fry sandwiches. I think in some places the entire sandwich is then fried.

Sunday roast. Roast beef,  carrots, peas, potatoes, boatloads of gravy, yorkshire puddings.

PINTS EVERYWHERE.

anyway - stick to sushi etc at lunch...

Welcome to the UK!

wow, thanks!  that is an awesome reply nellyjelly! :D Luckily i'm not a fan of beer at all, so pints are most definitely safe!

I got some of the Robinson's fruit squash in summer berries flavour and that is quite nice. Makes the water a bit more palatable! :)

Sainsburys do cheap and healthy caned soups at about 120cal a can... for the fresh alternative try covent garden soups, the mushrooms is amazing...

if ur looking for snack foods special k is good for "candy bars".. more like cereal bars... weight watchers do low cal cookies and icecreams.... quakers do caramel and chocolate chip flavoured rice cakes... amazing for chocolate hits!

birds eye do individule pockets of rice mixed with veggies to microwave steam.. they also do just veggies... and also try birds eye value fish fingers (99p at morrisons for like 14!!).. at about 130cal for 3!!

Mmmmm theres this brad of icecream sticks... they're tiny, about the size of ur finger, but they're only about 20cal each... i think they're called milk bars or something... u'll find them with all the icecreams... they're  tiny compared to weightwatchers or skinny cow icecream but they really do hit the spot :D

Fish is a good idea, but a george forman from argos and grill awaay...

weight watchers do a 48cal bread, 1.5grams of fibre.... u can get low cal cheeses/jams/"butters" in all supermarkets.. just read the labels...

oh and most shops and supermarkets have adopted the traffic liight scheme.. where foood is labeled VERY clearly... it makes it much easier to compare...

I love food :D
not sure where you are living but if you are in London its worth knowing a huge Whole Foods just opened in Kensington, and stock loads of the american stuff, though its twice the price of the dollars :-(
covent garden soup is amazing - they do risotto and porridge too now! I am addicted.  Some other great low cal foods are options hot chocolate/highlights hot chocolate - 40 cals a mug, and activia 0% yogurt, 65 cals a pot.  Also, sainsburys/waitrose/morrisons are the most healthy supermarkets, but the second two are expensive. Sainbury's do these nutritionally balanced 'superfood' meals, which have 350cals, 3 servings of fruit/veg, and an ideal ratio of food types - I love the mediterranean vegetable pasta dish!

I'm in the north and south of england (4 months + weekends in Liverpool, the rest in Bournemouth) and I love it here - prefer 'pool to bmth, but thats just personal preference ;) hope you like whereever you are!
