I love to have my cereal in the morning, but I have discovered that I a have a lactose tolerance problem and cannot stomach the milk. I am thinking about an alternative such as Soy. I am interested in any feedback I can get on Soy Milk.
Thanks
I know tons of people who love soy milk (they all say they get the vanilla flavored - tastes more like regular milk i think), I personally haven't had the guts to try it... but I've only heard good things about it =]
soy milk is delicious. so is soy cheese. i love all products made with soy. they are good alternatives to dairy
The problem with soy milk is the extra estrogen in it. If you use milk with any kind of frequency, you should probably try to decide whether the protein from the soy milk is a fair trade off for the amount of extra hormones. I find that the almond substitute tastes exactly like skim milk. :)
I love milk. love love love love love milk. I can go through a gallon in 2 days.
I prefer vanilla soy milk in my cereal. Soy dreams is the stuff.
I got my son hooked on it during a bad cold (milk makes phlegm worse) and he drank it for years. I got him the "Plus" that had the same nutrients as milk. I bought him Westlake and Silk.
Personally, I can't even stand the smell. I've had problems digesting soy too.
I take Lactase supplements to drink milk but they don't always work. Yoghurt and cheese are better for me.
I tried soy milk and did not like it. There is almond and rice milk for you to try as well. I am lactose intolerant but do not like those alternatives so I buy lactose free cheese from cabot and milk products from lactaid which are also lactose free.
Good luck!
I just switched from cream to soymilk in my daily coffee. I get WestSoy unsweetened vanilla (they have unsweetened chocolate too). Yes, it has a strange aftertaste, but I find the nutty taste goes REALLY good in coffee.
But I weaned myself off of milk years ago, so I don't know how switching regular use of milk to soy would really be for someone else :)
oh no!! i LOVE soymilk and drink 1 cup a day with my cereal (light vanilla silk is my fave). what is this about the extra estrogen in soy milk? is this really true? i dont want to be altering my hormones in any way. do you have an article i could read or something?
I started having soy milk in cereal while in the hospital after intestinal surgery since I told the dietician that I'm sometimes sensitive to milk so they stopped giving me any. The vanilla soy milk is really good with cereal... especially plain cereals like rice crispies or corn flakes that are really bland on their own. I have a problem drinking the vanilla soy straight through... it's like sugary water to me. I do however like the chocolate flavoured soy milk. Tastes just like chocolate milk to me (and surprisingly I don't even like chocolate milk) but it's nuttier, like someone else said.
you know i was scared to try it for a long time bc i just assumed i wouldn't like it... i finally did and i LOVE it.... better than milk!
I'm with jmc1221. I was also afraid to try it, but once I did, it's quite good. I use it to make my protein shakes and it's SOOOO good.
I use regular vanilla soymilk in my cereal and oatmeal and I LOVE it!
I too have been hearing differing opinions on the health hazzards of consuming soy... as soon as I hear something negative, I stop consuming it.
Does anyone have any information about the risks associated with consuming Soy?
Thanks for all the feedback everybody. This will prove very useful to me.
What I have heard is that eating whole soy products (soymilk, tofu) is fine, but eating isolated soy proteins (soy lechetin, TVP, fake meats) is not good for you. It is the second category which can cause thyroid problems.
Trid
I don't like soy milk and would never put it in my cereal. I think soy milk is okay sweetened, but I wouldn't put that in my cereal either...
I love my soy milk! Chocolate Silk is the best, IMO. :]
But, I would do some research before drinking it regularly if you're pregnant or trying to get pregnant, because I've heard scary gossip about it causing problems with development of the baby, and I'd say it's worth searching for some fact on the matter if that's an issue for you.
Personally, though, I've never had any problems with it, and neither has anyone I know.
