Why do I feel so fat around my boyfriend?
Asked by royalkaliber9 on Aug 21, 2009 in Emotional & Behavioral Issues

I cannot eat around him at ALL.  If he touches my sides, I freak out.  If he picks me up I have a panic attack because I do not want him to know I am heavier than him.  How can I gain confidence around him?

Answer

It’s natural to feel self-conscious about your weight and for teens to feel self-conscious in general.  Usually, though, others are never as critical as we we are about ourselves.  Good looks are more than what you weigh; they are about aliveness and personality, healthy hair and skin, cleanliness, thoughtfulness, consideration, and more.  Many guys prefer girls that are not thin, especially if that's what they’re used to at home. Of course, if your boyfriend makes degrading remarks, run as fast as you can!  Read about how to develop a better body image from the Guide to Weight Loss at About.com.
