Ever feel guilty?

Quote  |  Reply

I started running about a month and a half ago to help me lose weight. Turns out I really enjoy running, which is awesome. The thing is, I run in the morning and just get it out of the way. Well sometimes at night if I'm watching a movie or playing on the computer or what-not I feel guilty for not using that time to exercise. It's wierd, because I never felt guilty when I did zero exercise, but not I feel guilty about not doing extra? And honestly, the biggest reason I don't go workout again is that I don't want to take another shower - lame, I know, but it's true.

Anyone else ever experience this?

hells yeah. :)

i like to ride a stationary bike when watching tv or playing video  games

try that!

Yep, so I switch to a funnier movie.

haha yes. The more I workout the guiltier I feel when I relax which is totally backwards. Especially like you are saying, if I do it in the morning, at night I feel like I'm being lazy. I usually workout midday which helps with that. But if I do feel guilty at night, I'll do some extra calisthenics, you know some push-ups, crunches, extra abs, whatever I'm in the mood for while watching tv. Or sometimes I'll clean just to get moving a bit.

Oh, cleaning is a great idea! I would be pleased about moving (even a little) plus my room would be clean =)

I live in a dorm, but I am totally convinced that if I had a stationary bike or treadmill I would just do it while watching tv much more often. Someday, when I have my own place.

Yah, I feel kind of bad sometimes. Lately I've found myself doing lunges or push-ups while I catch up on my favourite shows.

I live in a dorm, too. I'd love to have a stationary bike or even an elliptical machine in here, but there's no space for that. My best friend and I are planning to share a place after college. I hope she doesn't mind if there's a bike in front of the tv.

does your school have a cardio theatre?? i live in the dorms as well and our gym has a lot of machines w/ tv's and radios to keep you semi entertained.  and don't feel guilty and think of it this way.........if you work out in the morning you have probably accomplishmed more before 10am than most people do all day! be proud that you're up and working out and not sleeping innnnn. :P

It's funny you posted this.  I was thinking the same thing last Saturday.

I run 5x/wk.  On my two "off" days I feel like a total slug - as if I don't exercise at all - and I feel really bad about it.  In my mind I know the down time is good for me, but part of me feels yukky about it. I usually end up going for a walk or doing something else that keeps me moving.

Haha, I like to look at it that way =) and yes, our gym has tvs in front of a lot of the machines, which is really nice. It's just when I get this feeling it's the end of the day and I'm trying to wind down. Treking to the gym and working out again probably wouldn't be the best idea for trying to get to sleep =)

No.  I have a plan and know what I am trying to accomplish.  Part of that plan is that my body needs some rest in between work outs so that it can recover so I can do another work out.  So if I have done what I set out to do in my work outs I feel totally at peace kicking back and watching a movie or a ball game or reading a book.

I feel that way all the time. If I'm not at work or in class, I'm working out, and if I'm not working out I'm reading about working out. I have to remind myself that I don't look any different today than I did yesterday, and I deserve a day off.

Don't let it get to you, you'll drive yourself crazy. Just think about how proud you are of yourself for how hard you worked all weekd, and tell yourself you deserve a break. And also remember that rest periods are just as important to your over-all fitness. Your body needs to recover, or you'll end up doing more harm than good.

Dear Jessica,

As you must have already known, you're not alone in this. I do have this guilty feeling sometimes when I spend too much time online even though I work out regularly (like 5-6 times a week, 1-2 hours per session). Today, I went for 2 separate running/walking work out because I just felt like doing it. I feel so motivated today and I didn't force myself to do it - great feeling.

I just recently threw away my weighing scales because I feel confident enough and know that if I eat healthily and exercise regularly, I will be fine. I will be alright. Having battled eating disorders from the age of 15 till now (20), I think I want to be over with this non-living scales and get on and enjoy my life a bit more.

Don't feel guilty about enjoying the time you spend on television. As long as you know you have done your part, you should give yourself credit when it's due. I am also doing my very best to be kinder and more compassionate to myself and learning to trust my body system to work itself out.

Be kind to yourself, dear. Keep up with the running! :)

I don't really feel guilty because I know if I work out too much, I'll get burnt out. That's happened before when I try to do EVERYTHING everyday. When I try to do cardio, abs, rowing, and weights everyday, I get burned out. My schedule's just too busy so I'm trying to ease into it slowly.

I don't feel guilty at all. When I workout, I push myself to my limit. So when I take an off day, I can do so with a clear conscience. Plus, I know that I need those off days to let my body recover from the previous workout.  If I was slacking during my workouts, then I might feel guilty taking a day off. However, I go all out on every workout.

Just to give an idea of the type of workout that I do, yesterday I did an intense HIIT workout with burpees. I had it set up with 30 seconds on where I would do as many as I could and 30 seconds off. I keep doing this until I got to 100 burpees. It is even harder when you add a pull-up into the burpee at the top of the jump. However, I tried that workout last weekend, and it was way too hard. My endurance isn't up to where I would like it to be yet. So after that hellish workout yesterday, I am more than happy to rest today..LOL

The secret is just eating really healthy. Some people think they have to workout everyday. However, as long as you are doing resistance training/cardio at least three days a week and watching what you eat, you are doing fine. I think diet is a big obstacle for a lot of people. I allow myself one day a week where I cheat a little. Other than that, it is healthy eating the other six days. I don't always like it though..LOL
