I feel like a failure...

I'm in pretty good shape, I go to the gym and do cardio at least 3 times a week. But I decided to train for a 5k and I usually do aerobics class and when I run, I run on the treadmill but today I ran at the park and I couldn't even run for 1 mile straight, and i only walked/ran about 1.5 miles, I feel like such a failure... :( I'm still going to keep at it though.

running on a treadmill is good cardio; but its not exactly the same as running for real, its more bouncing in place as opposed to relying on yourself to push your weight forward, thats prly why you werent able to do as well as you thought.

you're right to wna keep at it, you should do a combo perhaps.

alternate days and such.

you will prly find that you dont go as fast in real life as you do on a treadmill either.

no worries tho.

You aren't a failure!  At least you are trying to do something good for yourself.  I agree with jesse - just keep at it.  When I first started going to the gym, I couldn't do the elliptical for more than 3 minutes.  Seriously.  Now, I'm up to 15 minutes, lol! No, I'm not able to go for hours like some can, but I just keep trying, and my stamina is increasing.  Yours will too.

 I don't think anyone can be a failure at fitness - as long as you've got a goal and you're working towards that goal in a way that makes sense.

 So you wanna be a 5K runner? Hey, just wanting to be one is more than most people. And you can run a mile already, now you just gotta work on your distance ;)

dont worry about it! if you've been running on the treadmill and do aerobics classes, you've probably developed different muscles and it'll take a few days for your body to get used to running on pavement. 

right now i'm in crew, and even though we did winter conditioning with indoor rowing machines, rowing on the water is still different. it's gonna take us a while to get to our full potential.  we already have our cardio stregnthened, it's just gonna take a while for our bodies to adjust.

just keep it up! honestly, i love jogging outside, but running on a treadmill def. makes me feel really fast (i got a 7 min. mile on it! which i doubt i could do on a track)

Thanks Everyone! I ran a mile today again, seemed just a little bit easier, maybe I was just in a better mind set. I'm keep at a mile for this week and work up from there. My mom and I signed up for a 5k on March 28th, at least it gives us something to work for. :)

When you run on a Treadmill you don't use your hamstrings as much (back of thigh) which is a pretty big group of muscles. (will tire you out faster)

It is always better to run outside! and you will get there. If you do have to run inside always but the treadmill on a grade of at least 2%.

Good for you for making an effort to mix it up a bit - that's what keeps our bodies guessing and makes life interesting.  If you want to build up your distance, you could try a training program of sorts - I'm currently working though one called 'couch to 5k' which I found on coolrunning.com. It's an 8 week program, but that's starting from absolutely no running at all so you might be able to kick in half way through the program where you're up to now.  It uses intervals of running and walking to build up the distance and time that you spend on your feet so you don't risk injuries.  There are also a heap of podcasts you can download for this program if you like running to music and/or just want someone to tell you when to run/walk so you don't have to watch a clock.
