I feel like salad tonight!
But!
I have no idea what to put in one.
I like every vegetable under the sun,
so possible combinations arent a problem.
IM JUST SO BORING!
I can never think up a good salad..
I always end up eating a bag of lettuce and tomatoes..
I know that there'll be alot of salad experts out there,
so If you please, calorie counters -
can you share some great salad recipes with me?
Thanks!
it's mixed greens, gorgonzola cheese, pistachios, dried cranberries, pears and grapes with some kind of balsamic vinaigrette. i thought it sounded weird till i tried it and fell in love!
Tonight I get home from college late so as a quick dinner I'm making a tuna salad :
Canned tuna mixed with lgith mayo and honey mustard, then thrown on top of a mixture of lettuce, diced tomatoes, and corn :) Salad possibilities are endless
Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Women has an amazing salad recipe!
Mixed field greens
Raspberries
Pineapple
Green Onion
Raspberry Vinaigrette.
So good!
Figs, Feta cheese, Cherry Tomatoes, Nuts (pine nuts, walnuts, almonds, peanuts.. whatever), Fruit (strawberries, blueberries, oranges). Beets, Cucumber, cheese...
The combinations are ENDLESS!!!!!!!! OMG you are making me hungry and I'm stuck in the office with no food for 3 more hours. AAAAHHHH
Lettuce
Tomato
Bell pepper strips
Tuna
Pinto beans
Sauerkraut
Salsa
Jalapenos
Sour cream
Uh yeah..like I said it SOUNDS gross but don't knock it til you try it =P
Then again I'm known for my crazy food combos! I figure if I like it all separate, why not try it together?! haha
A mixture of veggies are good, but for me it's all about the dressing. My new fave is Wishbone Bountifuls. Tuscan Romano Basil is THE BEST! Really tangy, a little sweet and only 25 calories per 2 tbsp (and I never use that much). Kinda high in sodium though, but it makes any boring salad delicious!
I don't eat salad dressing but I tend to throw ACV on my veggies if they seem a little bland. This is my favorite salad:
onions, collard greens, romaine lettuce, grapes, apples, carrots, jicama, avocado and some raw sunflower seeds. YUM!
anything with avocado and/or grillled chicken...
I love this salad from Panara Bread and I can pretty much duplicate it at home.
Mixed Greens, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple bits, mandarin oranges, pecans, poppyseed dressing
:)
1) poppy-seed salad with red onions, mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes and poppy-seed dressing (poppy-seed tends to be high in cals so the low-cal is the best but it's got a strong flavor so you can just lightly toss the salad in a small amount and still be satisfied)
2) Light Honey mustard dressing with lettuce, black beans, Avocado, red onion and Tomatoes ( it's also yummy to toast a black bean veggie burger and chop it into bite size pieces and add to the salad as well)
3) mexi- salad, mix a small amount of fat free ranch in with your favorite salsa to make a dressing then use a crisp lettuce, corn, black beans, avocado (or guacamole), onion, jalepanos and tomatoes. I usually toss my dressing/salsa mix into the salad and then top with a little extra salsa. If the your calories allow top with shredded cheese.
4) Asian Sesame dressing tossed into lettuce with toasted sesame seeds and crispy baked wonton strips (shredded Grilled chicken is really good in this too)
5) I mix a 2 tblspoons hummas with a little olive oil and crushed red pepper flakes (or garlic powder) to make a thick 'dressing' then toss it into a mix of lettuce, green peppers, onions, Tomato, and marinated Artichoke hearts. I also found that if you buy the packaged marinated Artichoke that you can also mix a little of the 'juice' they are floating in into the hummas mix to thin out the 'dressing' and add just a little more flavor. This one could be kinda high in calories if you don't watch the amount of artichoke, olive oil and hummas put in but its super yummy!
With the right portions I manage to keep them all around and under 300 calories.
Twiggy, some of my favorite salads are totally off the wall...I love nuts in my salad now and fruits as well.....beans are also GREAT! more satisfying than just lettuce and tomato....I am a big tomato lover, but you need more...and I love croutons....I find the more I incorporate different things in my salad the more satisfied I am.....and you will be too!
Dude - you should be keeping up with my awesome salad posts!!!! I just put one on here a little while back called Mock Nicoise Salad - if you feel like searching for it... Or better yet, google nicoise salad and you will find the ingredients to the most amazing salad in the entire world! It is DELICIOUS and filling! You will LOVE IT!!!!!!!
this may sound silly, but when you guys have a salad that has protein and stuff in it, what do you eat along with it? thanks!
i actually like to add chunks of avocado and clumps of almond butter and trail mix to my salad-so good!
agruskin-when I make a protein-filled salad, I see it as a whole meal rather than thinking of what to serve with it. I fill up the whole plate with the lettuce and arrange the other items on top :)
the almond butter idea sounds GOOD! Reminds me of how I've seen goat cheese served on salad (although I HATE goat cheese).
the almond butter is great and it stays clumped together more than PB.
i like to have a carb though so i was wondering if ppl will have a slice of bread or potato with it or what?
i have salad for dinner every night... lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, celery, kidney beans, garbanzo beans, maybe olives or feta cheese, and light olive oil dressing or just vinegar, even. salsa also makes a really good dressing, especially mixed with hummus. it's a lot of food for a reasonable amount of calories (most comes from the beans, dressing, and cheese).
