Feel Sick after Eating an Apple?
I love apples; they're juicy and crisp and I would love to eat them more often; however, when I eat apples I can only get through about half of a large apple before my stomach starts to hurt. I don't eat anything else with it usually, but get the same result when I do. It almost feels like acid reflux. Is there anything in an apple that would cause this and is there a solution? Is it normal?
I also get stomach aches and that acid feeling when i eat an apple. I also feel hungrier after eating one by itself so i always try to eat it with something. Somtimes i pair it with celery and light laughing cow cheese, eat a small container of dannon light n fit yogurt, put it in a salad or my fav. is to cut it up into slices, add cinnamon and microwave for about 1:15 minutes. But i don't know why it happens. Mystery to me.
i just had this happen to me. i'd like to know too... and i'd like to know how to feel better because i'm really feeling ill right now.
I know a fair number of people who are allergic to apples... perhaps you have an intolerence to them?
okay this happens to me too, doesn't stop me from eating them though... good to know im not the only one
The same thing happened to me last week, (I eat apples daily), like to the point where I couldn't walk. I think it was because my mom accidentally bought York apples instead of Fuji (which are just fine with my stomach).
Perhaps you should try another kind of apple, and see if you experience the same things and if the symptoms go away, try and fall in love with a new kind of apple.
Edit: Fiji = Country. Fuji = Apple. Got it.
Oh my goodness, this happens to me too. We don't have a lot of fruit to have for lunch, but there's always apples, so I pretty much force myself to eat a half of one everyday. My stomach is taking it a little better these days, but it used to be REALLY bad...
My mouth always burns and itches a little while after I eat them, and they are a little hard on my stomach too. I never heard of an allergy to apples...but I am with you, they are delicious. I think I would take technicolor's advise and try a new kind of apple and see what happens....
This also happens to me whenever i eat apples. I think it's because it's so light on your stomach, and your stomach want's something more heavy. Why not try High fiber oatmeal in the mornings with sliced apples?
It's happened to me before too, same thing when I eat raw carrots as well. I used to eat granny smith's which would make my tummy hurt, but now I eat gala, fuji, braeburn, and one other kind, I can't think of the name, but none of those seem to upset my stomach.
Apples are acidic, so maybe your stomach just doesn't tolerate that kind of acid well. Most likely it happens with orange juice, too? Sometimes eating cheese/milk or some other protein with it helps.
I agree with shoeofkuribo's suggestion to eat a little protein with it.
I have at least three apples a day. I love them. But I find if I eat one on a very empty stomach, it just makes me feel hungrier or makes my stomach hurt.
Whenever I have one shortly after a meal, though, this is never a problem.
I took Technicolor's advice and tried a Fuji apple after eating a small meal of turkey, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables (courtesy of Healthy Choice). I ate about 1/5 of a medium apple and became very nauseous and had to stop. It's usually not as bad with Granny Smith apples and I can eat more. Maybe I really do have some intolerance to apples. I'll keep trying other types to see if one is less reactive.
I never knew so many people had the same problem I do. Thanks for the advice. =)
i've decided i just sometimes eat very large apples much too quickly & that's what causes me to be uncomfortable. since i had that problem last week i've been making a conscious effort to eat them more slowly and have been fine. i've also been microwaving them with cinnamon, so i have to eat them more slowly because they're hot, and that seems to help.
You may have a fruit intolerance. I've known of some people who lived in poor health for years until they stopped eating fruits. After that they lived happy healthy lives.
I had the same stomach issues with apples and so I had some testing done. My tests showed that I can not have fruit and sugar within 4 hours of each other. That included citric acid,etc.. as fruit in prepackaged products and all cane sugars. The cause is because my body can not digest the fruit and sugars at the same time. The sugars digest first so the fruit sits in the stomach and ferments. I love apples too but my health came first so I have stopped eating them.
I get that with raw celery. If I eat it like I tried to last night foolishly, I just bring it back up again. I start feeling like I am going to vomit within 5 minutes and then I do. It is very odd. I can eat it cooked fine.

Some of you might be reacting to the chemicals that are sprayed on the fruit during the "cleaning" process that the produce co. and stores use. There is a special soap that you can use...you might also soak the fruit in some water.
I also think that adding some protein like natural peanut butter or cheese as mentioned above is a really good idea. If the problem persists I would go to an allergist - if you suspect a particular food as a problem, the allergist can test you for it and, since this food is very good for a body, can suggest 'cures' for you so that you can enjoy your fruit or veg/
