Feeling colder.....am I crazy?
My wife thinks I'm nuts but since losing the 30+ pounds over the past year I am much more sensitive to cold temperatures. I love the winters but find myself much colder and needing sweaters, etc. Anyone else notice this?
I feel cold pretty easily too, after losing a significant amount of weight.
After losing close to 75 pounds, I feel colder much more easily too! Mind you, I was very heavy and was constantly sweating with blushed cheeks etc. just to live. Your 30+ pounds was like Luke Skywalker wrapped in the carcass belly for warmth! You simply don't have that exterior coating anymore.
You are not nuts, my dear. I am absolutely freezing this winter. My workplace is kept around 63 degrees F for the sake of some of the machinery and I think my fingers are going to fall off!
Last year, and fifty pounds ago, I actually preferred the cooler area.
Best of luck,
Patricia
absolutely i have a big change in sensitivity to cold after just ten lbs- it makes sense when youthink about it- fat is the body's insulation
no you are not crazy at all....two years ago when that first winter after I dropped 115 lbs rolled aorund I could just about go outside I was soooo cold...I mean it makes perfect sense, fat helps to keep us warm and when that's gone...well you get cold easier...
the good news I have since adjusted and winters/cold weather does not bother me as much as it used to
Gah! I know the feeling! Apparently your body temperature should regulate, but mine just seems to get worse.
After I lost 70lbs, about 2 years ago now, I still feel cold. It's started to become an on going joke. I wear 5 layers to work at the moment as it's been very frosty here lately. I wear huge wooly jumper & fleecey PJ bottoms & 2 pairs of socks to bed.
On holiday in California there was a bit of a heatwave (for October) & it was 98F. My boyfriend got heat stoke, I was fine. Thought it was quite a comfortable temperature for wearing a vest top & jeans.
I have earnt myself the tittle of 'Lizard Girl' ![]()
I have noticed this especially since my bodyfat went from 23 to 15%.... I hate winter :(
Loss of body-fat means you have 30lbs less insulation. If you're eating less, that's also going to affect how warm you feel.... us warm-blooded mammals have to eat regularly whereas cold-blooded reptiles only need to eat once in a blue moon.
FAT is natural insulation...you don't see skinny walruses, do you?? ![]()
I'm always cold and in a coat when my co-workers are in short sleeves - of course, all of them are obese! Go figure!
Congratulations on loosing the weight - and go out and buy yourself a new sweater!!
Yep , I have only lost 25 lbs and I freeze.. I sit in my house most of the time with sweat pants, tank top, long sleeve shirt, sweat shirt, 2 pair of socks and under a blanket, all the while my kids are running around in shorts and t shirts.
And my thermostat is on 68*
Same thing happened to me after losing around 100 lbs. An inconvenience I happily accept! ![]()
Two years ago I lost a quick 30 lbs in 3 months time. I was freezing in the middle of July, and it was in the 90's. Turns out I was very ill; fully recovered now, also gained back the 30+ lbs.
Now, I've relost the 30 lbs and some more, but a healthy loss and not with illness.
You are NOT crazy my friend. We've lost our "insulation" . I should have been an Eskimo where being heavier is the way of life! Of course, I'd be one freezing popcicle if I was an Eskimo now. I'm not a beach babe (yet-
); let's see, there's no beaches where I live either. I must be in the right climate for the weight I'm at. I hope to lose another 10-15 lbs by this summer. I'd sure hate the thought of having to relocate just to stay warm.! Weight loss can be expensive!
Have a great day! Add another layer of clothing or stoke up the home-fires, if you know what I mean. ![]()
Count your blessings--you have lost weight and you don't have to suffer hot flashes!! I sleep in as little as possible with a sheet and still wake up in the middle of the night hot (and not in the way my husband would appreciate! lol) I think you will eventually adjust. Grad an extra sweater.

I agree! :D
On the flip side, after losing 30 lb down here in the sunny south, I am more tolerant of heat (but less tolerant of cold as well). Maybe you should think about moving south!![]()
I have experienced the same phenomenon. I have recently lost nearly 60lbs and used to be my own nuclear thermal core!!!! But, with a layer of insulating fat gone, I find that I don't sweat just standing around. I actually have to get my body moving. Now, I'm wearing sweaters inside, layering and feeling the effects of the cold.
But, I recently went to donate blood and was refused because my blood iron levels were low. A side effect of this is feeling cold. Because I have cut down on red meat, this is an unfortunate side effect, so I am looking for alternate forms of nutritional iron. I take supplements now to get the levels back up. You may want to get your own iron levels checked out, just to be sure.
I thought that was just a personal joke that I made after losing a little more then 30lbs myself. Good to see that its actually a common phenomenon. I really did lose my insulation :)
Mind you I'm very glad I did, I don't mind wearing the warmer clothing, at least now they fit me!
I noticed to that since I lost some weight I am ALWAYS more or less cold in winter even in the house O.o
