Feeling like a failure

Quote  |  Reply
I ate more than I wanted/should have and I hate myself for it.  I did SOOOO well today, and not just today, all week even!  Plenty of fruits and veggies, dairy, protein and an hour of cardio.  But then came the night and I absolutly failed.  I am trying to keep my count at about 1000-1200 and tonight and went up to 1800. and i hate it bc i know tomorrow the scale is not going to be my friend Cry

it's ok. you're not going to gain weight from eating a few more calories then you usually do. especially if you've been doing good all week.  =)
Don't worry about it. Your not a failure because you had some extra calories. We all mess up every once and while. Just focus on tomorrow and the fact that you'll do better.

hmm.

1000-1200? ok,well, they (being the scientists,i guess) have suggested that women eat no less than 1200.just pointing that out =]

besides that,i can remember bieng in your exact position. when I first started dieting, i thought everytime i overate, id ruined my diet. OPPOSITE OF CORRECT (which is wrong, incase you didn't get that.im not trying to call you stupid, but lotsof times when i say that, people dont understand waht im getting at..) first of all, you'd had to ahve eaten 3500 mroe than you burn to gain a pound, so dont worry about any weight gain. Second? one night of overeating wont kill you. i "overeat" probably once every 2 weeks, and i dont even give it a second thought anymore. I usually overeat and fruits and veggies anyways; and i hate restricting myself to a certain amount of calories; it always makes me over eat in the end. I eat whenever im hungry, just instead of reaching for cookies, pastries and granola bars, i go for rice cakes, fruits, veggies, and healthy snacks.

Your 1800 splurge actually brings you up to where you need to be on average.  1200 minimum for adult women a day. There are exceptions to this but they involve being under 5' with a slender build or being under the care of a doctor or nutritionist.  While a weekly average is not quite as good as getting the minimum per day it is better than not getting the calories.  You probably went up to 1800 today because your body needed the additional calories and would not let you continue to skip out on them.
I'm new here, but already feel like I fit in. I pretty much feel like a failure everyday when it comes to my eating. Every morning I start out with the mindset that "today is going to be different." I do good all day long and then when evening rolls around, all I can think of is what I'm gonna have next or what time I can eat what. I live with my boyfriend who can eat anything and everything and never gain an ounce. He supports me as much as he can I guess, but I just feel like if I didn't have to buy all these stupid snacks at the grocery store, I could take much better control. It's not even that I am eating bad things, it's just a lot of little things that are adding up. I know I work out enough, but the sad part is, I'd already be at my goal if I could just stop the stupid snacking. My advise would be not to feel bad if you mess up one day, at least you did good the rest of the week and that's what matters. I know it sounds bad coming from me after all I just said, but I can give better advise then actually doing it myself.?Good luck to you. (and for me, it's still early where I am, so I haven't failed yet:)
tweek264 learn to snack on healthy foods and you'll be fine. 'overeating' may actually be your bodies telling you I AM HUNGRY.
Thanks for the reply. You may be right. I don't eat much during the day 'cause I know how I am at night, so that's probably why I eat so friggin' much later in the day. I read all the magazines, books, etc... and I know what I should be doing, but something in me just stops me from doing the right thing everyday. I really hope this website is what I need. I don't get too much support anywhere else. Thanks!
this website is great. I have the same problem sadly, and all i can do is force myself to remember yesterday when i start of on a new day. Tell myself repeadtly, no more nighttime binge.

Thanks for all your support! I really appreciate it.  I know that sometimes I may sound crazy, but I feel better when I express what I am feeling, that way I can get support from others :-)

Again, thanks everyone....Im sure I will be posting again soon lol

wait! i thought 1200 was a hard number...like "don't go under this or else!!" kinda thing...

i'm 5' tall, (no inches, some days more like 4' 11.5", depending on who measures) and i have a small frame (well, under the pudge that my dorito addiciton has gifted me with) so are you saying i could actually eat a little under 1200 and be ok?

sorry this has nothing to do with the original post, i just never heard there may be an exception to this 1200 rule, i lost well on about 1000-1100, maybe a little more calories a day, and then i heard (here, on CC) that it was bad to go under 1200, so i upped it, and now i'm loosing very slowly or not at all...

thank you for any input you can offer me as to this! thanks!

I know exactly how you feel! I rarely have cheat meals - but when I do, I feel guilty for days about it.

In fact, this happened to me yesterday. I was out all day with friends and they wanted to stop at an Italian/pizza restaurant for lunch. I didn't like the idea of not knowing how many calories I was consuming, but I didn't really have a choice.

I estimated that I ate about 1600 calories (total for the day) when I'm normally supposed to consume 1200. I felt very guilty about it - but you know what? Those kind of thoughts are ridiculous!

You should NOT beat yourself up over it (and neither should I!). It's one day. I've found, actually, that when I have the occasional cheat meal, I end up losing more that week because my metabolism gets a small boost.

We just need to keep telling ourselves not to go crazy over 1 meal or 1 day of cheating!! Good luck! :)

I used to eat a lot at night, but many times I find that I am eating because I am tired.  When I catch myself doing a lot of snacking, I stop and ask myself if I really just need to sit down and relax, or even go to bed!

night-time binging... maybe this will help, maybe not, but worked for me:

about an hour after my "last meal" I used to brush my teeth.  Then, I have this nice clean feeling in my mouth and I don't want to ruin it with cookies or soda or whatever, so it reminded me to stay out of the kitchen.

Now, I don't need that extra incentive, cause I'm too lazy to get up off the couch to go to the kitchen for a snack ... LOL! But that's a totally different issue :).

It is very difficult for women to get the proper nutrition by eating less than 1200 calories per day, proper nutrients are important for the body to function properly.  Given that you are so short, I would discuss your calorie intake and exercise plan with a nutritionist or your doctor.  I know that there are a few people (short sedentary women) who have paid very close attention to their bodies and their bodies reactions in addition to consulting with nutritionists/doctors who do eat around 1200 calories or very close to it as maintenance.  In order to lose weight, they have to exercise or very carefully cut calories and watch their nutrition like a hawk.  Do a search of the forums for shorties, 5' or under 1200 and see what turns up, as I recall, there are a number of threads relating to this topic.

I cant help but freak out when I get on the scale.  Btw today and about 2 weeks ago, it seems that I have gained about 3 pounds.  Honestly, I have NO clue as to why this has happened.  The most I overate, was that 1800 that I posted about yesterday.  So I have been staying btw 1000-1200 a day and working out everyday and lifting every other. (FYI im only 4'11).

I have 2 theories as to why this happened. a) could it possibly be muscle that i gained by lifting? or b) is it just bc it is time of the month and therefor water weight.  I have also been drinking a lot of water and cut waaay back on my diet soda intake to help maintain water level.

Am I crazy, or did I really gain 3 pounds of fat?!

  1. food you ate that's still in ur stomach
  2. water weight (either from ur upcoming PMS lol, or too much sodium, or too less)
