why am I feeling sick after workouts?
I'm hoping somone can give me some good information. I started a basic cardio routine 10 days ago - an hour on the treadmill (6.0 incline at 3.5 speed) Burns about 400 cals. For the last 3 days I get really nauseous about 30 min after I'm done. Sick to the point I'm almost bed-ridden. Am I doing something wrong?? I am hypoglycemic..and I do watch that very carefully. I eat an hour before my cardio. And also have a protein/fruit shake after my workout. I drink water. Eat about 1300 cals during the day. Overall healthy. Just trying to figure this out. If this continues I don't want to work out anymore. Feeling this sick afterwards is not worth it. I'm female. 30. 5'2. 134lbs....trying to lose about 10lbs. Thanks for any help!
Sounds like you're working out a little too hard. When I started doing long physically demanding workouts I would often come home and crash after about a half hour - and some times feel sick for hours. I'd suggest either reducing the time by 15 minutes or reducing the incline to maybe 4% for a week or two and see if it makes a difference.
You should also consider eating just a little bit more if you're burning 400 calories through your work out - ensure your deficit isn't more than 500 calories for the day.
If you're just starting, you may be doing too much treadmill -- 6.0 incline at 3.5mph for an hour is an awful lot for someone just starting.
Also, if you do this daily, you're probably throwing your body into an almost shock-like state. You should try to give yourself a day in between workouts like this, see if that's helpful.
Also seems like you're not eating enough.. but who knows,
I've had the same experience after really intense workouts with my trainer. I notice it doesn't happen if the workout is just a little less intense. I agree with others that you may want to scale it back and bit and eat a little more. Good Luck!
The first condition most people experience when exercising is reaching their lactate threshold. This is when the physical effort you are exerting produces more lactic acid than your body can process. This is typically the chemical reaction in the body that leads to nausea, dizziness, a metallic or acidic taste in your mouth, blurred vision, etc. Rather than resting, it is better to just start walking. Continuous, low effort movement, will help your body to process the excess lactic acid - even if you feel like you want to just curl up into a ball.
The second condition is much more dangerous; and probably not a contributor to the experience you are having. But, it is worth mentioning, because people really don't understand that over-exertion doesn't only lead to feeling sore in the morning. You can over exert yourself to a point where you die (sorry, that's a real buzz kill, but it happens). The condition is called rhabdomyolosis - exertional rhabdomyolosis occurs when a person exerts so much effort that shed muscle fiber and lactic acid causes the kidneys to begin to shut down the body. It is a defensive reaction by the body, much like shock is. Once the body goes into rhabdo shutdown, people need to move quickly to secure medical attention for the victim. Google rhabdo for the symptoms.
The short of it? When you are feeling truly ill from working out, listen to your body....
Stay safe,
Rb
I see you posted a message last year about getting sick after your workouts...
After a year's time...how are things?
I recently started an intense weight training workout and find I'm feeling nauseous a while after I workout and even the following day(s).
I appreciate that you posted the question and had people reply. :D
It's helpful!
I think I'm pushing myself more than I've ever done and my body is reacting negatively...errr.....
So, I'll take it easy where I can. :D
Anyway...just wanted to say, I hear ya. :D
Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?
In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
