My feet feel fall asleep or numb

Quote  |  Reply

I like the elliptical machine because it seems to be less hard on my knees and burns more calories. But, my feet feel like they fall asleep or numb. I try to do the heel to toe motion and shift from a wide stand to a closer one. (the steps on our elliptical machine are pretty wide) and still the problem persist. I have tried tying my shoe laces lower, thinking maybe they are cutting my circulation off. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you!

You know...I get that same feeling.  I thought I was just a weirdo..hah.  Nice to know someone else gets that too.

LOL, ok now if we could just get on board with a weirdo that has overcome this issue, It would be great!! LOL.

I think a lot of us get the numb toes thing. I've been using mine for six months steady now, and I still get it. It helps to wiggle my toes a bit and to get off when I am 2/3's of the way through so I can walk the feeling off.

The numbness comes from the stide and the weight distribution common to most elliotical users. It's been widly talked about on this forum and most of us just shrug it off. It may help to loosen your laces!

I used to get that when I first started. After I got used to the machine and really started exercising on it more frequently, it went away. Try to loosen up your shoelaces a little. Also try some ankle stretches to see if that helps. I noticed that when I started stretching my calves before my workout, the numbness stopped.

Good luck to you!

Edit: One more thing, as a beginner I found myself on my toes most of the time during the workout. This might have something to do with it. Now that I am more adjusted to the exercise, my feet are flat on the "pedals". Hope this helps!

Your post made me smile. Alas, I am turning 40 this year and have decided to recreate myself.. change my lifstyle etc... call it a mid life crisis I suppose. I have to lose about 100 pounds. I have been doing the elliptical faithfully for about a month. I usually do 65 minutes at level 6 with an incline of 10. I have noticed that once I increase my incline a bit, the numbness is not as noticeable. I am so glad that I am not the only one that suffers from the numbness syndrome. I thought for a moment that I was going crazy. Thanks for the post!

Are your numb toes the middle ones? I get that sometimes too, but when I change up my stance or wiggle my toes it helps a lot. A runner friend of mine tells me it's likely a mild neuroma: sounds scary, but it just means that the nerve is getting a little bit pinched. The nerve that runs through the middle of your foot apparently has some kind of sheathe around it that can rub... Not a big deal unless it puts you in serious discomfort. If it becomes a huge problem, you can get inserts for your shoes that correct it. Anyway, I trust her, so that's what I'm going with :)
