Feet go numb during workouts.

Anyone else have this problem?  I thought it would go away once I lost some weight, but im at -56 and I'm still having a problem.  I go on the elliptical trainer and make sure my weight is even on both feet, and i still end up getting numb toes after about 20-25 minutes.  This normal?  I've worn 3 different kinds of shoes, and they all do it.

Someone talked about the same thing - check out the posting under Fitness titled:

to ladydeathbird, feet going to sleep?
This happens to me, too, on the elliptical as well. Since the elliptical is low impact, I really don't need shoes... so, I take them off. I have a special pair of "gym socks" that I only use for working out at the gym.

Presto! no more numbness of the toes.

Where did you get these "gym socks"??  I'd like to try them out!
This happens to me too!  Most quickly to my right big toe.  Weird...
me too!
What are these socks?
Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. They are not special socks, just socks I use only at the gym (since I use the elliptical w/o shoes and I don't want to bring those germs home).

The brand is Underarmor, anklets, and they're a bit thicker for comfiness. You can find them at any sporting goods store.

My suggestion is to buy shoes from a specialty store, a place that goes out of their way to hire knowledgeable staff. I go to a place called On The Run (San Francisco) and the salespeople there will look at the shoes you came in with to see how they are wearing out, look at your feet, watch you walk as they lay on the floor to get a better look, and have to run up the street and back in different models/brands to find the right fit. You will probably pay more than at the SportMart, but its worth it.
i too have the same problem, and i don't think it is related to weight or age, i'm not overweight, average, and just turned twenty. the eliptical is the only piece of equipment i have this problem with, usually my right foot. in efforts to relieve this i focuse on balancing my wieght evenly through both feet also focusing on using the arms of the machine to pull reliving my feet. this has helped, i do accosionaly switch up my cardio routine, 15 min of eliptical, then 15 of walking with an incline, then another 10-15 of the eliptical. i've have noticed i get more out of my workout, feel less tired after my workout, and my feet feel 100% better.
I've found that when my feet go numb while biking it is because I have over tightened the shoes on my feet.  Usually loosening them up helps to allivate the problem.  Hope that helps!  :o)
I have the same problem no matter what machine I use or what shoes I have.  I even went to a specialty shop to get the "right"shoes and they STILL go numb!!
Im thinking it might be due to having too-tightly-tightened trainers. The same thing happend to me this morning during my half hearted workout!

I have the same problem (and I thought I was the only one). I believe it's a floating nerve in your foot that causes one or more toes to go numb. I've had my doctor check it and once they found the nerve it actually hurt when pressed on.

I like the gym socks idea and I may check that out.  What I do to alleviate mine is in between my sprint modes on the eliptical I take a short break and do some ankle rotations.  It helps some but it doesn't fix the problem.

I frequently experience this problem, not sure of the cause.  It sure is annoying though!

The only thing I've found to help is just to not stay on the machine so long - as another poster recommended, try to break it up by doing 15 minutes or so, then switching to another activity that doesn't have this side effect, and maybe going back on the elliptical a while later.

I have this problem too.  Sometimes my feet go completely numb and sometimes I experience terrible pain (like someone shoving an ice pick into my big toe).  Usually the right foot has it worse than left.  Yesterday, it was the worst it has ever been--I had to fight my way through the whole workout, and I was groaning at times because the pain was so bad.

I'd love to know why this happens.  I'll have to try working out with shoes next week and see if that makes a difference.

I hear this is very common and if your gym has Arc Trainers you could try those instead - very similar workout and they say most numb-footed elipticalers don't have that problem on them!  My gym has a row of Arc Trainers just for this reason.

If the sensations ranges from numb to pain it's most likely related to nerve pinching.  It used to happen to me on the outside of my right foot, it ended up that I had a pinched nerve in my lower back that was aggrivated by exercise.  If it's really bothersome I'd tell you to see a neurologist.  He was the only dr that could diagnose and fix the problem for me!
