Aww that stinks.  That's why I stopped weighing myself every day - if I went up by a pound and a half, I'd go right back to bed and mope for awhile.  Not constructive behavior :)

Anyway, point is, weight goes up and down all the time - 3 pounds isn't that staggering.  As long as your long-term trends are down, down, down, you kinda have to ignore the weekly (or daily) bumps along the way.

My husband has caught me once or twice yelling at my fat.  I'm exercising!  I'm eating right!  Why can't it go away *faster*?!  It can get frustrating, but...

3 pounds could EASILY be water retention, which happens for a ton of reasons.  If you're still going up after a few weeks, then there's more cause for concern :)

Keep up the good habits!  What you're doing for your health and the way you feel is tremendous :) Sometimes losing weight has to be secondary to that, to the fact that you're going to live better, live longer, live happier :)

Hey j-snyder: about your 3 pounds - don't worry; and drink water, drink water, drink water. Everytime I've had a "blip" I really up my water and it seems to help within 1 or 2 days.

Hope everyone is doing well as we approach the weekend. I'm feeling "blah" today but maybe if I can get moving, I'll start to get some energy. There are just "blah" days sometimes.

Female 5'9" looking to lose around 5olbs, so that i can look and feel good again.  i've been losing weight for about 18 months now and am sick of doing it on my own.

Ha, wasn't MY three pounds.  I have no idea what I weigh today XD  Not weighing myself 'till Monday, promise :)

Blah days are rough - but sometimes it's nice to take a break and just try again later.  But then again, I'm in no position to talk, since I'm all excited about learning how to do Flash animation in my spare time, which seems to be giving me motivation for everything else, too :)  Funny how it's all inter-connected?  Just trying one new thing that I'm getting the hang of, and suddenly everything else seems within reach, too...

Boy, I'm going to make MYSELF ill with this much cheerfulness :)

Ooh, not to get all personal, but what do you weigh now?  How much have you lost so far?  18 months is a long time, good job at keeping going for so long on your own!  I don't think I'd ever make it if my husband weren't supportive, as well as being able to chat about diet-stuff with diet-minded people :)

j-snyder -- oops! SO sorry about that. I wasn't watching the post thread very well. I intended my advice for Eileen12183 (as I'm sure you figured out). Anyway, I'm encouraged by your cheerfulness. Have a good day.

I'm in the same three pound boat here!  Been working out, eating right, and drinking water by the gallons! We'll see what the scale says Monday but I'm about to throw it out the window right now!!! Doesn't help that I just went to try on swim suits.

I'm 29, weigh 191lbs and am looking to lose at least 50-60 lbs in the next six months.  I would love to have a "buddy" to help w/motivation, etc.  I am eating 500-800 calories per day and am lifting weights 3x per week and running/walking 3x per week.  Some days I lose a lb and then the next morning gain it back.  Not quite sure why but I'm getting frustrated.  I suspect it's because the weight is not coming off as quickly as I'd like.

probably because 500-800 calories a day is ridiculous?! i tried 900 the first 3 days and was dying, and realized it was HALF of what my body needed to function. you need to reevaluate your stats and start eating what your body NEEDS you to eat.

I'm 37, 5'9", 236 lb and would like to get down to 150 lb  by early next year.  15 lbs lost so far.  It's amazing what pregnancy can do when you give into every craving :)  Can I join in?

In response to carpae, I think you may not be eating enough if you're lifting weights and running 3x per week and only eating 500-800 calories (there's no way I could do that; I would be starving all the time).

In re:  500-800 cals - That's the thing though, I'm not starving.  I'm eating - but eating very lean protein, veggies and good carbs.  I'm watching what I eat and doing it in perhaps extreme moderation but nevertheless I do eat several times a day.  I started eating (not this low) but more healthy around April 1, 2008 and have lost 6 lbs since then.  Also, according to CC I should eat 1200 calories per day so 700 would be a 500 calorie deficit, correct?

Well bummer for me - now I'm in the "2 pounds up from last week" group.  I think I got a bit overconfident, and stopped counting my calories right around dinner time (I'd estimate to say to myself "I don't think it's too much," but I wasn't actually counting).  Bought a food scale this weekend, though, so hopefully that'll keep me on track.

Weekends are killer too - less structure to when/how/where I eat.  I'm not sure what to do about that, since I'm always running around...

Hopefully everyone else had a good week :)

Here are my stats for this week:

Not having looked for/knowing your stats, I'm not certain that 1200 is really accurate for you (it may be, I haven't looked), but that 1200 should be your total for the day AFTER you subtract your calories burned during exercise.  1200 is generally considered the minimum your body needs to survive at all, which means if you don't eat that much, your body isn't getting the fuel it needs to live.

Nutrition is important - it's good that you're eating lean meats and veggies.  But in the end, the calorie is king.  You absolutely must eat enough calories, but not too many.  It's a line we all tread every day - eat enough so your body can do it's "thang," but try not to eat more than we're burning off.  If your total calories that your body is GOING to burn for the day is 2000 (which it generally is for a sedentary lifestyle - sometimes it's as low as 1800, but still), then a 500 calorie deficit is actually at 1500. That total reflects calories you consumed, minus what you burned off.  So if you ate 1700 calories, but burned off 200 walking the dog, then you've hit spot-on the 1500 calorie mark you were aiming for, with that 500 calorie deficit that you needed.

I'd recommend talking to your doctor, maybe getting a referral for a nutritionist - they may be able to explain it better, and have the time to coach you on a one-on-one basis.  Calorie-Counter is a great support tool, and there's lots of great information on this site, but it's no replacement for sincere, professional assistance.

We're glad to see you around here, though, and it's great that you are finding people to help you out :)  Lifestyle changes are the most difficult if you have to make them alone.  Be glad there's some great resources available to set you on the right track! :)
