err..the thing is i lose my period two months ago when my weight started dropping..just like the last time i dropped to 53 and below, the period stopped. This time I dropped till 50 and it stopped but when I gained it back(yo-yoing cycle..sigh), it came.. And I stopped eating meat other than seafood. So my friends and i thought it was iron deficiency. Then i started eating a lot of nuts, like a HELL LOTSA nuts-which link to the weight gain problem- since nuts have iron.so the question is,

Did I lose my period because

  • lack of iron?
  • weight loss?

Hey!

Are you saying you only weigh 53 lbs?  If that's what you were saying I would guess it's because of the weight loss.  I went a long time without one because I didn't have enough body mass, which your body needs in order to have a period.  At least that's my basic understanding.  As for the no meat, I've been a vegetarian for almost two years and discovered I had somewhat bad anemia.  This didn't cause me to not have periods though.  You can find daily vitamins that have 100% of the daily iron you need.  Anyways, sorry this wasn't a very scientific answer - but that's my best guess

Sorry just realized that's kg not lb.

lol..if i'm 53lb, i probably fly by breeze now..

How tall are you? 50 kilo’s can be healthy if you are short and small.

If you lost your period in the past when you go to that weight, and got it back when you gained weight, and have recently lost it again when you lost weight then that answers your own question…. When you lose weight you have lost your period before, and now you have lost it again after you lost weight…

Periods usually stop due to hormonal problems/imbalances, lack of fat, or losing too much weight for your body. Iron deficiency is the least likely reason to lose a period.

Sweetie, you really need to call a physician. There are many reasons a woman can lose her period. Problems can be from low weight, to pg to tumors blocking the flow. I have had problems with my cycle in recent years and have learned that you really need to see a doctor when having issues. I've had to have biopsies done and learned when a cycle is irregular there can be many causes. See your doctor. Have you been getting a yearly pap test?

There are better sources of iron than nuts but, actually, the fat in the nuts would help restore your period more than anything. However you can lose your period for many reasons and you ultimately need to go speak to a doctor about it.

These are all taken from Ask Mary, the section of Calorie Count provided by our Nutritionist Mary Hartley.

Why did I lose my period?

Under-eating, rapid weight loss, excessive thinness, and low body fat can disrupt your hormones to make ovulation and your periods stop. The condition is called amenorrhea (a’.men.or.rhe.a), the absence of menstrual periods. amenorrheaamenorrhea can lead to infertility and other medical problems ,such as thinning of the bones. Visit your doctor for a complete assessment.

Is it okay if my period stopped?

No, For women who have begun to menstruate, missing three periods in a row is one of the diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa. It's also diagnostic if a women needs to take estrogen for her period to occur. Of course, if a woman isn't pregnant, missed periods might be due to a variety of medical and emotional conditions. Consult a gynecologist for the correct diagnosis and treatment.

I lost my periods, but I'm not underweight. Why?

You are growing and developing and so you need at least 2000 calories a day. Presently, your body is coping with a food shortage by suspending your reproductive function in favor of supporting growth. Return to the weight you were when your period stopped. You need to stop the restrictive diet. Find female role models who are not rail thin. When you are older, your body might naturally drift to a lower weight.

I am eating healthy and I gained 10 lbs. Why did I lose my period?

Women need a critical level of body fat to menstruate because estrogen production is dependant on fat. Women who exercise strenuously may be “all muscle and no fat”, and so they may not meet the minimum requirement of 12% body fat for good health. Furthermore, many individuals need as much as 17% body fat to function normally. You could have your body composition assessed at your gym to check your percentage of fat, or just gain weight to see if your period returns. Either way, you need to see your doctor anytime you miss three periods in a row.

My periods have stopped and my hair is falling out. How do I get them back?

Amenorrhea (a’.men.or.rhe.a), the abnormal cessation of menstruation, is associated with low body weight, rapid weight loss and excessive exercise. You should always consult your doctor if you miss three periods in a row. Undereating and being underweight disrupts your hormones and so ovulation stops. While your weight omay be technically within the healthy range, it might be too low for you. To maintain your present weight at your activity level, you need to eat at a lot more calories a day. You could need even more calories for your period to return.

How can I make my period return without gaining weight?

Your period won't return until you gain some weight. You had a lot of weight loss in in a short time, consistent with malnutrition. You've lost not just body fat, but also protein from your muscles and organs, and now you don't have enough protein to spare for normal processes, like your period. Your BMI is in the underweight range. You should have a healthy BMI and gain weight.

With you only being 16, your profile speaks of "boy breasts" and "boy butt."  Were your female relatives of that same build at 16?  At 18?  You may be okay and developing on your family's genetic schedule.

However, I noted on your profile, at the 50 kilos you once were, you barely pass on the low end of the BMI at 165 cm in height, and are below normal if your height is more like 167 cm.

Your body needs fat, internal and external sources, to make estrogen.  Estrogen is manufactured by the body from cholesterol, internal and external sources.  Your borderline BMI is on the low end, so I fear this is hampering the estrogen development of female curves, height, and building up bone as well as suppressing your period.  Matter of fact, when you are missing periods like that, you should be concerned about the condition of your bones (as well as being pregnant or ill).  You are in your prime bone-building years, and missing on feeding your bones now, could come back and haunt you with early osteoporosis in your forties.

Perhaps you should aim over time to be mid-range normal on the BMI scale, 21.7, meaning you should gradually get to 59 kg (130 lbs) at a height of 165 cm (5'3").  Of course if you have had regular periods at a lower weight, and if you start to fill out like your female relatives at that weight, that would be okay too.  You basically want to eat enough to maintain your period.

And I agree with an earlier poster about that if you lost your period due to weight loss or low body weight, it will take time for it to come back.  Your doctor could advise on that.

I'm 5'5 / 5'6..usually depends on the height scale i used.. But my friends said I'm probably 1.67 m..

for those who recommend me to see the doctor..this is what my mum response when i told her my period came,

"Good! Now I can save the medical money up.."

Its not that she's evil, though i think she is sometimes, its just that being a single mum with 2 children who loves to spend money, she needs to save as much as possible.

Oh ya, about something else..

I went for a checkup the first time it happened, and the doctor said, there's a cyst growing.. It was a small one then, so she thought its no big deal and would come off by itself.. She gave me some hormones or something pill and my period came..

r4eboxer..

what's a yearly pap test?

to the others,

just in case, I'm not sexually active even though i think bout sexs stuff everyday. I just want to know what makes people love it..

To christinavt,

When i first start losing weight, I was at 60kg and look real plump.. One of the remark from my cousin was, "You look like a running rambutan" when I wore a red clothes.

My mum's side is on the leaner side. And the Domineer (mum) herself looks great and sexy and sometimes I think my boy-friends would've date her if I didn't told them she's my mum. Meanwhile, the female side from my dad is overweight. I think I'm kind of weird compare to them. I don't look like any of them, not my mum or my dad or even my bro, who some of the teachers thought he was my boyfriend.Urgh..

And boy breast and butt problem.. Look at my picture, I don't exactly looks like a girl. From my toddler time, I looked so much like a boy when I had my hair short which I'm not complaining about...
