Hey there ladies. I have a question.
I've always had a sort of irregular menstrual cycle. Lately, it had been getting more regular. Lately being the past year. But since I started losing weight, it's been weird again.
My cycles have been like this:
Started:
January 23rd
February 22nd
March 24th
And then in April... nothing.
May 25th
June 25th
And I've just missed my July period. So what's the deal? I don't understand why I missed tis one. I mean, I joined a gym and started working out harder, but that was after it should have started. Should I expect them to go back to normal, or will weightloss keep me like this? Anyone have similar weird patterns?
Reason: Moved from Weight Loss to Health & Support
Well, I was just worried because I used to have a seriously off cycle. Only got a period 2 or 3 times a year. So irregularity just kind of makes me nervous.
I also am highly irregular, the weight loss can definitely contribute to even more irregularities.. I mean your cycle is your bodys normal thing to do, when you loose a lot of weight, you're changing your body, and this makes it panic. Also is you're stressing over anything that can have a alot of effect too. I'd ask your doctor to be sure.
I read in "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom" by Christiane Northrup, M.D. that most of the time abnormal uterine bleeding is connected to family issues in some way. She also talks about how it relates to an imbalance in our system. I found this book pretty helpful, you might too.
Maybe it's what you are eating. I've found that I had horrible periods until I became a vegetarian. I've read that animal protein can cause problems in this department. So if you are doing atkins or something with high protein that's probably what is causing it. Either that are you exercise like an olympian.
I, too, have always had an irregular menstrual cycle. I got them every couple of months, usually around the same time of the month, almost like it was on a quarterly schedule. I've lost about 40 pounds over the last year and my cycle has become a bit more regular, but it's still not normal. When I went to see my doctor earlier this year, she had me get some blood tests done and then referred me to an endocrinologist. Right now, I am in the process of being diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). You can read more about PCOS here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/polycystic-o vary-syndrome/DS00423. I've no idea if this will help at all but I thought I'd mention it because I'd never heard of PCOS before this and you never know what might help. Let me know if you have any questions!
I also have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. I was diagnosed 4 years ago because of my irregular periods, excess body and facial hair, and numerous cysts on my ovaries. After much reading I've learned that for people like me, when we are overweight (to make a long story short), the pituitary gland starts to produce too much testosterone. This causes an imbalance with the hormones, and it disrupts a person's normal cycle. It also causes some of the other symptoms.
I can happily say that after a 78-pound weight loss, my periods are fairly regular and most of the excess hair has disappeared. As much as I like the regular periods, I think I like the loss of the hair the most. I know that from my perspective, every time that I've wanted an unhealthy snack and managed to not eat...every time has been worth it. It's been hard and I'm not done, but I'm definitely a lot healthier.
