Fending off The Freshman Fifteen...

Quote  |  Reply

For those in college, or those quickly approaching it, beware!!! The Freshman Fifteen - the bane of college calorie counters everywhere - is ready to take a new group of victims on campuses nationwide this fall!

For those who have felt the pain of the 15lbs of cafeteria food, hanging out in the dorm, not having your highschool extracurriculars, and just being too darned lazy to get out and about, join me in losing that weight! :) As an upcoming junior in college, i'm still waging war against the last 10lbs - who's with me?!?

*EDIT*

August 4th, 2008

To anyone just seeing this topic, please know that you're still welcome to join us! There are voluntary weigh-ins each Wednesday if you're interested. Whether you're headed to college, in it, or leaving it we're happy to have you! :D

Nope - just a viral infection. Went away with rest. Thank ****.

And I own my own hookah, Carrie. I've never been to a bar though. Sounds super cool.

Hey everyone, I'm getting ready to start my battle with the Freshman 15 so I figured it was time I came in here haha. I move-in on Labor Day.

I know my dining hall posts the nutritional stats of their dishes on little cards in front of the dish, but I don't think the stats are available anywhere else so I could reference them later. hmm. Anyway, we'll see how it goes. I'm gonna be much more active when I have a gym so close & a whole campus to walk through, so I think I may just win the battle =p [...wishful thinking?]

Matt, yeah it was cool.  It was just really chill.  That's cool that you own your own - I don't know anyone IRL who has one.  Glad you're feeling better! :)

Vicky, welcome! :)  My dining hall does the same thing - you don't know how many times I stood there looking like an idiot trying to memorize the info for something, haha!  As long as you pay attention to what you eat and stay active, you should have no problem avoiding the freshman 15!  Just watch the snacking - that's what did me in, especially snacking while studying (it's just so booooring lol).

Thanks for all your support guys, my first weekly weigh in is tomorrow and I hope to be below 115

I just made myself a post work out snack and it's incredible. I took an entire apple and chopped it up into tiny little cubes. Then I dumped it in a bowl, added 1 tbsp of almond butter and mixed it with the whole thing, added a whole bunch of cinnamin and 2 packets of splenda and put in the microwave for 30 seconds. I was just messing up and it's like, the best thing I've ever had. It took more time to make than say...opening up a protein bar but it tastes like apple pie! I love it when I just mess around in the kitchen and make something delicious.

I've decided that the thing I'm most worried about in college is alcohol. I drink alcohol now but probably once every 3 or 4 weeks. In college I'm sure it'll be closer to every weekend. Besides the calories of alcohol, the calories of the snacks I eat while consuming it. I think I'll try to get back to counting more actively, not estimating, once school begins. It's just that now I'm in such a routine where I know the stats of what I eat so I can just estimate everything to the nearest 50 and keep a mental tally. It'll be a little bit harder to do that in college I think.

Lea - yeah, the alcohol thing is concerning me as well. I know I'll be at parties with my frat and with my friends... and I know that I'll be drinking. IDK if it'd work for you, but what I'm planning on doing is keeping to my 1200cal during the week, and letting myself eat what I like on the weekend :) I figure with alcohol, I'm looking a 3500cal day once a week, and probably up to maintenance Friday and Sunday.

If I have a 400cal deficit during the week, I've saved up 2000cal extra to party on the weekends :) IDK if it'll actually work like that... but that's the plan, stan. :P

mmm... that apple thing sounds delicious! Like pie filling =D I might have to try that!

Oh! And on a good note, my university has started posting the calorie counts for their food on a website that's updated each meal period, so I can go on there and figure out what to eat before I go =D Hooray!!!

I think I did fine freshman year because I was looking out for the weight gain. I just got comfortable sophomore year and that's when I stopped really checking on myself because I thought I was past "getting adjusted" and that since I hadn't gained, my habits must be pretty healthy. Wrong-o! But hey, at least I'm all better now :) The last time I weighed what I do now was middle school :D That's a pretty cool thing to be able to say!

When I started dieting, I used my roomie's Weight Watchers scale because I didn't have one... so I'm excited to get a true net loss shown on there when I get back to school :) (She'll be my roomie this year too)

I can't wait! :D

WEIGH IN:

 127.0lbs

Weight Goal for next week: 126.0lbs (where I was 2 weeks ago..)

Work-Out Goal for next week: at least 3x doing 30-30-30

Down 1.0lbs from 128.0lbs last Wednesday

Work-Outs since last Wednesday: 1x doing 30-30-30 plus I got about 3-4hours of walking around and shopping on Saturday, if that counts :P

So I feel like I've slacked a little on the workouts... mostly because I'm usually out of town on the weekends. I'm going to try really hard to get in all 3 this week, so that I can get back down to 126.0 by next week :) I move into my apartment next weekend, and I'm still trying to lose as much as I can before then! So about a week and a half left... and TTOM will be through that time. (ugh, moving in is horrible anyway - I'm sure that'll cause all kinds of unneeded drrrrrama.) Anyway, maybe coming out of it I'll end up down around 125.0 :D That'd be wonderful! Here's hoping :)

My wednesday weigh in is 114.0. I'm very happy about that :) Its not down, but it's the same and I feel more toned. Goal for next Wednesday is 113.0 so I'll have lost 1 lb that week.

My decision not to weigh in everyday is making me feel much better, I would get really discouraged by frustrations. Whoever said that you get a better trend with once a week weigh ins is really right!

I'm 148.0 this morning...so the same as two days ago.  Which makes sense.  Only down .8 pounds from last week, but down 3.2 from two weeks ago, so I'm happy :).

Now I'm going to go for a run and I slept in so now I have to do it in the heat...blah.  Oh well.  Talk to you all laterrr :).

I weighed in at 182 today, and my trendweight continues to go down.

As for the alcohol, well, I think you guys will manage. I sure did.

Great job you guys!!! :)

That's great Lea :D Because then you know that you've probably replaced that weight with muscle! And that makes for a much slimmer look, no matter what the number is.

Way to go, Carrie! :D Then you know that that's real weight loss! 3.2lbs in 2 weeks - awesome! I am going to have to start buckling down more, so that I can say that too ;)

Matty - Lol, well, if I'm losing weight after I drink, it's only because I drank too much and... yikes. I don't want to be using that line from the devil wears prada "I'm just one stomach flu away from my goal weight!" :P Still, after being this close, I'm sure I'll make it :D Just gotta keep it moderate

Great job everyone!

Matt, I'm sure we all wish we had your luck with drinking, lol!

Heather, 2 pounds is like nothin.  You're practically already there!! :)

okay guys... so i head off for orientation at school for two days. hopefully i'll just watch what i eat and try to estimate my calories. i did get in some exercise this morning so that was good and i planned for tomorrow to be my rest day and boy do i need it!! yesterday i did lunges with 2 25lbs plates. im sooo sore.

hahahaha. but i weighed in yeseterday at 115lbs. maintaining time!!

Congratulations Megan, and good luck at orientation! :)

Carrie - Lol, I know! I feel the same way... now if I could just convince the scale... :P

Meagan - Congrats on 115! :D Carrie was right - your prom dress is GORGEOUS! You look so pretty in it! Good luck with orientation :) Be warned - people like to do outrageous things in front of them for kicks. Probably not so much during the summer :P But have a good time! :D

On a personal note, I kicked my BUTT at the gym tonight :D I decided to try the treadmill... did 1.25 miles before it started just killing my knees... so I got off, did all of my weights, and calisthenics and thought "I can't have only 1.25miles... that's awful and I've been really bad about getting here..." so I went and did another 3 miles on the elliptical :) I was already exhausted from the weightlifting and all, so I really felt pooped by the time I got back. All in all, I must've burned at least 600cal. :D I think that's my new all-time high, lol. Sweet :)

Whoa Heather way to kick butt!!! Haha :).

I had an AWESOMELY AMAZING run this morning...I ran about 2 1/3 miles in 25 minutes without walking!  This is a HUGE accomplishment for the girl who could barely run 5 minutes without walking two months ago.  I used to feel like dying if I ran 10 minutes without walking, now I barely feel winded!  Also, usually by the last couple minutes of a run I'm checking my watch like every 30 seconds, but today I was like oh...I only have a minute left, really? :D

So yesterday I had a pretty crappy day at work, and I kept stressing about it for the rest of the day, so by evening I was in a "I just need a freaking chocolate bar" mood, lol.  I also went out to dinner, so I ended up eating around maintenance.  Then today I was up to 149.2...I don't think one day of eating at maintenance should have made me gain over a pound, so maybe it's because of the chocolate bar I ate around 10:00?  Who knows...

Matt - I added you as a friend like 38290348230 years ago, so add me! :P  Unless you seriously object...those italic names mess with my OCD, lol.

ok my body' been feeling really weird lately. On Monday I did cardio and then my own strength training routine - tons and tons of waited squats etc. Tuesday I was real sore but I did plain cardio. On Wednesday I went to this body circuits class I usually go to and I upped a weight from 5 lbs to 8lb dumbbells, and it kicked my ASS. Everything was sore. I also had gone rollerblading that morning. Thursday I tried to do cardio but I was real tired so I ended up doing a lot less than usual, but I still got myself to do it! Friday I woke up and everything was still sore. I didn't work out and I ate way too much. So much to the point htat I was miserable and sick to my stomach. However, I had this massive binge at around...5 and then I didn't eat anything else the rest of the day (not hungry) so I don't think I went over my calories too much.

Today I woke up, and everything is still sore! What's wrong with me? It feels like I had a massive workout yesterday - not a pig out! I want to work out today again so hopefully my body won't still feel like this - but do you think it means I'm losing weight? I hope so! I'm not weighing in again til Wednesday and it's weird going from a daily weigh in to a weekly one!

hey guys,

well its my weekly weigh-in today and I was 156 :( soo up one pound from last week and the same for the past three weeks, baisically since I began calorie counting, so I'm sorta a bit discouraged cause whenever I go on a diet it seems impossible for me to break out of the 155-160 range, like my body just sits there. Well there it is, yesterday I went to a baseball game and ate some junk food, so I'm going to see what it does tomorrow.

Lea - I'm sort of in the same boat (But not as hardcore on the exercise - great job with that!!!!) I went on Thursday and worked hard hard hard (like I said in the post before this). Anyway, yesterday, I was a little sore and it was my little sister's birthday party. Yeah, she had it late... but I learned my lesson from last time! I didn't have ANY cake, ice cream, cream puffs, s'mores or chocolate turtles.

But I ate tonnnnnnns of fruit :) Like... 4-5 cups at least of cut watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, grapes, and clementines. Delicious! And she had a giant Subway party sub. I had what would be equivalent to about a 6 inch. Other than that, I was pretty good =) It looked like I was only at about 1300cal for the day... so even unaccounted for munchies shouldn't have sent me over my burn. Still, there was so much fruit that I felt like I was GORGING myself.

So this morning, I woke up expecting to feel like a sloth and I was SO much sorer than yesterday. I feel like I've been working like crazy, when all I did the day before was eat! I'm hoping that by tonight I'll feel good enough to go and work out since I'm already up to 700cal today and its barely after lunch! (I usually eat up to maintenance on Fri/Sat anyway.) I hope it means that we really just beat our bodies and that they're using all of that nourishment to rebuild our muscles :D

Michelle - Don't be too down about the 1lb gain :( I used to feel the same way about being stuck in the 130's... but lo and behold! Just keep pushing - it has to give way sooner or later. You can do it - just keep focused! Enjoy the game!!! :D

****. I thought we were friends. I don't really understand the friend function. What's the purpose? I'll try and fix this.

On another note, do you actually have OCD??

Edit: I HATE how I can't swear here/

Haha, no, I don't actually have OCD - just some OCD like tendencies.  I was just making fun of myself.  And I don't know the real purpose of the friend function...

So I ate around maintenance two of the last three days...ugh.  And I didn't run today either, but I'm going to run tomorrow morning instead.  Here's to making next week a better week! :)
