Fending off The Freshman Fifteen...
For those in college, or those quickly approaching it, beware!!! The Freshman Fifteen - the bane of college calorie counters everywhere - is ready to take a new group of victims on campuses nationwide this fall!
For those who have felt the pain of the 15lbs of cafeteria food, hanging out in the dorm, not having your highschool extracurriculars, and just being too darned lazy to get out and about, join me in losing that weight! :) As an upcoming junior in college, i'm still waging war against the last 10lbs - who's with me?!?
*EDIT*

To anyone just seeing this topic, please know that you're still welcome to join us! There are voluntary weigh-ins each Wednesday if you're interested. Whether you're headed to college, in it, or leaving it we're happy to have you! :D
Confession time. My day started out pretty good then I decided to have a donut with my salad and fruit lunch as a treat. Then came lab meeting, WAY to many snacky foods (my weakness) so I pigged out then, and I had to make a poster tonight and I started snacking on cereal and I couldn't stop..I think I went through half the box :S So thats like 500 calories plus already being over my limit for the day. And now I feel gross :( oh well, tomorrow is a new day!
Carrie~ I'm on the semester schedule but we have a three week long "interim" in January dedicated to a single course so that might be why the times are different.
Hope everyone has a good end to their weeks!
Sorry my last post has been so quick, I've been so busy lately - rushing around trying to fit in friends and family and packing! less than 2 weeks until I leave - absolutely crazy!
Anyway last week I had a really bad week because I stopped logging cals and started counting in my head....I definitely lost track and then at the end of the day I would be hungry and then pig out...I'm already trying to do MUCH better this week because I really want to be like 113 or 112 by the time I leave (two weeks!).
I've been working out a lot and my body is pretty consistently sore! It feels great though. Today I'm going to the waterpark with my boyfriend and I actually told him I'd pack lunches so we didn't have to eat that gross high cal amusement park pizza and stuff. I'm packing myself a turkey and avocado sandwhich, a bag of strawberries, and a granola bar. I'm packing him a ham and cheese with mayo sandwich, a bag of strawberries, a granola bar, and 4 cookies. Ah the perks of a high metabolism!
anyways on the fending freshmen 15 part... i've been doing okay. it really is the lets not come home after drinking and go to the pantry. i've decided i can have one thing when i get home... cause i usually am hungry anyways drinking or not, but then i must go to BED!! cause if i haven't been drinking its easier. if i have been i can just devour a whole box a cereal. but last few days i've been making sure to account for how much im gonna drink, one snack and make sure i eat enough calories before i got out so i HAVE to stop. its none of this... but i havent eaten enough today excuse. YOU'RE DONE!
like last nite. most definately went to hooters. and it was fun. split fries with a couple people got a nice healthy option of steamed shrimp, did not use the butter. so i got an awesome amount of protein. it was gooood and my friends and i all had a great time.
so yay. i've been doing better. i think. ha.
LEA- congrats you're totally gonna make your goal by the time you leave!!! i know that soreness is a pain sometimes, i don't know about you, but i love it all at the same time. does a body good!
I'm getting ready to go to a friends house, so I'll read and reply to everyone's posts when I get back, but I just wanted to tell you guys a couple things. First of all, I decided to stop counting calories. I'm not going anywhere though - I'm totally addicted to the forums, and to this group! I also decided to change my goal - I want to weigh 135 by Thanksgiving. Read my newest journal for details :).
Talk to you later loves!
lol. freshman fifteen? try freshman forty in my case. BEWARE quesidillas in dining halls. If you go to Purdue, walk away, no run from Hillenbrand's quesidillas!
:D :D :D :D :D
Guess what, you guys? :)
I couldn't weigh in yesterday because I was moving my life to college again, but... I was 124.5 today!!! GOAL!!! :D :D :D
I'm so excited!!! I'm getting a measuring tape later today and I'll post the results for everyone :D No worries, I'll still be CC'ing... but thank you guys so much for all of your support in helping me get here! I feel like a band new person. :D I have officially lost 25.5lbs! And I am HEALTHY! :D I love you guys, and I hope you're all doing well this weekend ^_^
Heather I'm so happy for you!! You did an amazing job! You worked so hard and it FINALLY paid off.
I can't wait to weigh in on wednesday, I feel like I'm having a really good week :)
I've picked the site of my final dinner at home before move in - PF Changs. I've decided already, I'm going to get the tofu lettuce wraps as my entree - 330 cals. Then I'll ask to go to Rita's water ice (ritasice.com) where I'll get a children's size fat free custard with rainbow sprinkles (150ish cals). Yum! :) Then after that the true challenge begins!
YAY! I weighed in this morning at 154 :D so I broke the 155 barrier and am pretty darn happy about that :) and my waist is now 30 inches :) so yeah, this seems to be working fairly well!
Heather~great job :) I'm so glad you're happy and healthy
Lea - Thanks!! :D I really appreciate all of the help and support. :) These weekly weigh ins did SO much to keep my motivation up when I felt like I couldn't see the change day to day.. and PF Changs is a good choice :D Yum!!! Of course, last time I was there, I went straight for the carbs :P hehe, so a good choice for someone (unlike me) who can control themselves! hehe! Enjoy it :D
Michelle - It really does feel so different :D I feel like I finally did something good for ME! And way to go on breaking that barrier! Just keep pushing and watch those numbers fall :) I'm posting my measurements tomorrow - alongside the ones from a week after I started CC'ing. :)
OK, so the other day I went out and, while I'm on meal plan, got some snacks to keep around the dorm. I thought I'd leave a list of what I got here for you guys, incase you were trying to think up some healthy things to keep around.
- Blueberries (2lbs)
- Grapes (2lbs)
- Bananas (1 green bunch, so they'll stay good a while :D)
- Applesauce (2 huge containers)
- 30 pack of baked chip grab bags (snack for class?)
- 2 6-packs of Luna bars (breakfast!)
- 1 canteloupe
- 3 cucumbers (to cut up and munch)
- 1 fridge pack yoplait light yogurt (100cal containers in peach/strawberry)
- 2 wheels laughing cow cheese
- 1box melba toast (wheat)
- case of water
- box of 100cal packs of popcorn w/ butter (movie night snacks!)
- salad dressing to carry with me to the cafeteria (Kraft Free Italian)
Ok, so not all of those are snacks, but most of them, in small quantities, will fit in a little fridge :) Hope that helps! Post your snack ideas on here too, if you have any that'd be quick/tasty dorm food! :D
Haha, so I officially suck at the not counting and just trying to eat healthy thing. I think I ate around maintenance for the last three days, so it's back to counting and logging for me. It was a nice break though.
Sorry I haven't been around much lately, but working 8-6 doesn't leave time for much else...
Hey guys - just checking up! Congrats Heather!
I've been taking a break from counting, as well...not sure when I'm getting back on it. My scale broke as well so I need to get one - Heather, how does your body fat scale work?
Just out of curiosity, have you girls heard of the P90x program? Look it up!
Hey you two :)
Carrie - its cool, that's how my summer job was and some days, you just can't get to it.
Matty - To the best of my understanding: The scale has small metal strips on it which send a small (you can't feel it at all) electrical pulse through your body. The electrical pulse travels through, and based on the time it takes for it to bounce back (you have to put in your height, weight, age, and athletic/normal), it can calculate the density of your body and, therein, your body fat percentage :)
I've heard of it, not too sure what it is. I'll look into it :) I find that I'm having problems feeling guilty about not working out... like I did at home. I think its because I'm walking so much again, but regardless, I'm getting my tush over to the workout center today (which is sure to be PACKED, as usual at the beginning of the year) and the kicking some! I need to find out when pilates/ butts and guts classes are, so that I can plan on going to them. Also, I'm definitely hitting the pool today :D Hooray! :) AND, I'm going to feel good about myself when I go. So, there all you skinny freshmen! ;)
Ok, I wanted a seperate post for this one :P
I took my measurements today!! Yay :D And I had some from back at 143.2lbs (not my starting point, but within 10lbs of it), so I was going to post my current ones and what I've lost :) (All measurements are in inches, except weight)
Chest (Bust)
Now: 32.5
Loss: 2.5
Chest (Band)
Now: 28.5
Loss: 2.5
Bicep (Not flexing)
Now: 10
Loss: 1
Natural Waist
Now: 25.5
Loss: 3.5
Tummy (just above hip bones where I sort of "pooch" + Love handles)
Now: 30.5
Loss: 3
Butt (Largest part)
Now: 37
Loss: 3.25
Each Thigh (Largest part of 1)
Now: 21
Loss: 2.75
Weight Lost (Between the measurements taken)
Now: 124.5lbs
Loss: 18.7lbs
Looks like I lost weight pretty evenly around my body :) Looks like its time to work a little more on those love handles and keep up the ab regimen. (Now you can understand why my mom referred to me as having "Island Thighs", right?) I figure I'll keep up the workouts and take my measurements once a month or so. =) I'd like to get my tummy down and maybe work on the butt a little more (though its a lot more muscular now :P). Any ideas what my measurements *should* maybe look like? What would be a good goal? Thanks, guys! :)
---EDIT---
Also, I measured my waist to hip ratio, and it's 0.70 - Is that pretty decent? What should I be shooting for? Thanks :D

Ugghh, guys, I've been having a hard time lately. For some reason I just can't stop eating. And it's not like I haven't been eating enough; I definitely have. I think it's because now I'm back to where I was a year ago, where I was comfortable. I'm comfortable at this weight, but not really happy with it. I'd still like to lose 10 to 15 more pounds. I guess it just seems less urgent now that I'm not disgusted by what I see in the mirror. I still want to lose weight for sure, but sometimes I just want that cookie more...until I eat it, that is. Oh well, I guess all I can do is keep on trying.
Heather, great job! I think your measurements should look like whatever you want them to look like! You said you want to work on your tummy and butt, so shoot for losing some inches there. Everyone's different, so no one can tell you what your measurements *should* be :).
WEIGH IN:
124.5lbs
Weight Goal for next week: Maintain!
Work-Out Goal for next week: Walk at least 1mile/day with backpack on campus + swim, rock climb, or run 3x! :)
Down 2.0bs from 126.5lbs last Wednesday
Work-Outs since last Wednesday: 1x doing 45-40-15 + Moving (my stuff - lots of exercise there!) + Swimming 2x :D
Oh yeah, I forgot weigh in. That wasn't on purpose, I swear...
I was 149.4 this morning. It's still TTOM though, so I'm hoping some of the gain is from that. There's no way I've eaten 4,900 extra calories in the last two weeks...at least I don't think there is :/.
Hey guys :) Carrie I suck at not counting too...it's so annoying because I feel like I should have a natural sense of what I should eat...but I don't! Whenever I don't count I go way over.
Weigh in - 116.0 The same as last week. I'm on TTOM though
After dropping down to 105 lbs 2 years ago at 5'7 i have slowly begun to gain weight back to a healthier state. for full story see profile. however... i usually will hit a number on the scale (used to be 112-113 last summer, during the school year and most of this summer it was 115) and freak out if i went to high above it and start to restrict which is the original way i lost weight. i have a crappy spring scale scale to begin with that is about 20 years old so who knows how accurate it is. plus i figured out i was reading it wrong so i was about a pound off. now im not eating any differently or working out any differently and it says im 117. GAHHH!! why am i gaining weight? im eating only 1700-2000 cals a day which is what i should eat for maintaince and i work out 60-90 mins 6 days week. im just trying to focus on when i look at myself in the mirror look mornng and be happy with the way i look. which i am... until i weigh myself.
im just looking for support and some advice on how everyone got over their "number obsession" with the scale. Thanks!!
Carrie - I'm sure you didn't either... but look at it this way: Even when you're on TTOM, you're still under 150! :D That means you're really truly into the 140's right? :D
Lea - I've been trying to train myself to look and see portion size recently. I just take what I have and visualize it in a measuring cup... that's the best I can do! I brought my food scale to school though. Oh, and that last reward I told you about? I think I'm actually going to do it ^_^ In a couple of weeks, maybe! :D
Megan - It sounds to me like you're gaining muscle. If the number on the scale is that "triggering" for you, maybe it's a good idea to lock it away someplace and start measuring your success with a tape measure. That'll give you a much truer reading :) Or limit the scale to once a week. That way, you can at least see "Well, I've gained 1.5lbs, but I've gone down .25 inches around my waist..." Which will reassure you that you're getting into shape, not becoming unhealthy :) I know its still a struggle... but you can do it! You're strong and you're determined, and everyone here believes in you. :D
i tooke em a while ago but i just did it again this morning:
waist: 25
biceps: 9
hips: 35
chest (band):27
chest (bust): 32
thighs: 18 (oooo i lost there for sure i remember that one!!)
those are the main ones i think i care about most. but yay!!! im happy plus i felt good when i worked out. i think i just want to whittle my waist a little (more muscle, lean it out, so i have more a of a curve, im pretty much have a natural waist but there's not much emphasis on it, more curvy i guess)
KEEP THE ADVICE COMING!!!
yay!! carrie that's awesome even on TTOM, that's another thing mine's coming up too, uh oh chocolate cravings...
