Fending off The Freshman Fifteen...
For those in college, or those quickly approaching it, beware!!! The Freshman Fifteen - the bane of college calorie counters everywhere - is ready to take a new group of victims on campuses nationwide this fall!
For those who have felt the pain of the 15lbs of cafeteria food, hanging out in the dorm, not having your highschool extracurriculars, and just being too darned lazy to get out and about, join me in losing that weight! :) As an upcoming junior in college, i'm still waging war against the last 10lbs - who's with me?!?
*EDIT*
August 4th, 2008
To anyone just seeing this topic, please know that you're still welcome to join us! There are voluntary weigh-ins each Wednesday if you're interested. Whether you're headed to college, in it, or leaving it we're happy to have you! :D
Heather, that's a really cute idea for you guys for Halloween! :) I have no idea what I'll be yet...probably nothing again, lol.
Hey solangeatira!! Good luck getting rid of that last bit of pudge! That's kind of what I'm working on right now too, except I'm not as petite as you, lol. We have weigh-ins on Wednesdays if you wanna weigh in with us! :)
So the water weight I was carrying from Applebee's on Thursday and then my grandma's birthday dinner on Friday is finally starting to go away...I was back down to 144.2 this morning. I'm going to work out later today...hopefully I'll see 143-point-something tomorrow!
Oh yeah, and a couple of my friends did mention last night that they noticed that I'd lost weight! Yay! :)

Thanks Carrie! Here's to hoping that you're down to your "143-point-something" tomorrow!
I'm just trying to lose those last few pounds and tone up some. I look heavier than I am due to where my weight has decided to "settle". Chick has a stomach and BIG hips. It's kind of aggravating! I'm tiny and even I can see that I look good when I'm dressed up but when the clothes come off, my insecurities set in. I hate that that's the way it is but I'm trying to be okay with it. The first step is acceptance, right?
At my smallest, I wore this amazing blue formal dress to a military ball with my sailor. I've got LOTS of good memories in that dress and would love the ability to get back into it when he gets here. When I was wearing it, I was about 7 pounds lighter and not quite as "flabby". If I can find a picture, I'll post it...
Carrie - Lol, Well, I figure since its on a Friday night this year, I'm going to make the most of it!!! :D Good luck with that 143.something! Hope the scale is being nice to you :P Now that TTOM has rolled around, mine has been... less than courteous... but I'm hoping for 123 by next Wednesday, when I should be well off of it, and eating well + exercise up to then! :) Awesome that your friends noticed too - I think it looks very obvious! :)
Solange - Welcome to the group! :) I'm a junior in college too, and like you, I was attacked by the Freshman 15 about a year late :P Mostly when I started drinking... Now I'm a veryyyyy occasional drinker, and I'm just trying to stay in my maintenance zone. I'm right there with you on the trimming down :) If I could just kick the workload down a bit, I think I could focus more on the workouts. I just got back from the library... which I've been at since 3PM. Yikes... 2 tests tomorrow, wish me luck! :P Definitely post a pic of the dress! Sounds pretty :)
Oooh, solangeatira, can't wait to see pictures of the dress! :)
Heather, good luck getting to 123, and good luck on your tests! I was FINALLY back down to 143.8 this morning; only about a half a pound above where I was last Thursday before my bad weekend. I went to the gym yesterday and ran 2 miles on the treadmill. I really hope that I can keep that up once classes start! I'm going to try really hard to go 4 times a week. Classes start tomorrow...wish me luck!
Mini rant: I bought two pairs of Express jeans in the same size and style but different colors, and one pair fits me great while the other pair is WAY too big. They're EXACTLY the same jeans except for the color...what the heck?!
Carrie~ I've noticed that phenomenon even between jeans of the same size and color. Every jean is still made individually so I always try on the exact pairs I'm going to buy.
Well I know weigh ins are on Wednesday but the scale said 153.2 today so I'm really quite happy. :) However yesterday and today I didn't count..so I need to get back to entering things in, its harder when you do your own cooking than when you buy prepackaged stuff and can easily enter it. :s

The cooking things yourself vs. buying prepackaged things is a dilemma that I deal with daily. Because I'm on campus and living in a dorm, it changes things a bit for me. In order to have ANY semblance of "healthy" (and not live on salad alone 24/7) I've found that getting the prepackaged "healthy" things and adding my own extras (fruits, veggies, etc) to it works well. Eating in the cafeteria here on campus means eating things that are either swimming in grease or have been cooked to a pulp. It's rather gross.
Wow am I the only one who loves my dining hall? One night this week I had a small piece of grilled salmon, a sweet potato, and cooked carrots and another night I had stir fry shrimp and veggies made on an oiless grill! I guess I'm really lucky :)
Weigh In:
144.0, up from 143.4 last week.
Yeah, with moving in and everything, I've been kind of bad. I'm trying to eat healthy without counting calories now, and it's kind of hard, especially because the stuff in the dining hall is so iffy as to the calorie content.
Time to buckle down, hopefully I'll have a better weigh in next week! Although by then it'll be the week before TTOM, so who knows.
WEIGH IN:
123.5lbs
Weight Goal for next week: Get back down to 123.0! :)
Work-Out Goal for next week: Walk at least 1mile/day with backpack on campus + rock climb, or work out 2x!
Down 1.0lbs from 124.5 last Wednesday
Work-Outs since last Wednesday: 1x doing 45-40-15 + Walking at least 1mi per day 5x week w/ 30lb backpack
Well, considering I'm TTOM'ing and down a pound, I have no complaints :) Especially since I'm averaging closer to 1300cal/day.. I'm having a HORRIBLE time trying to get to the gym, but I only violated my bus pledge once - I was late for a cross-campus test that ended up getting canceled anyway... but other than that, I have walked for 1 week! And I plan on keeping that up! Hope you're all doing well... and Lea, I'd kill for your dining hall. Here its either salad, salad, salad or fried, greasy, fatty. :/ Not a lot of middleground. /sigh
Definitely going off meal plan next semester...
Oh, and I have discovered that I LOVE Newman's Own Lighten Up Raspbrery dressing... so if you see it, you might give it a try! Super tasty :D
WEIGH IN:
110.3 lbs
Weight Goal for next week: Get back down to 109 -something.
Work-Out Goal for next week: Continue walking to/from class with books (approximately 3.5 miles daily minus "extra" walking) ; attempt to work in Cardio Salsa dvd 2x/week
Up from 109.4 lbs last Wednesday
Work-Outs since last Wednesday: Walked to/from class with 30 lbs worth of books daily (approximately 3.5 miles daily only counting to/from class. Anything else is considered "extra" walking); did Cardio Salsa DVD once. **bought a cheap pedometer this weekend and it's become my best friend!**
I'm averaging between 1200 - 1300 calories daily but I'm spending WAY more money than I should. The dining hall on campus does NOT lend itself in the slightest to eating healthy so I'm eating a lot of things from a grocery store... thus, spending LOTS of money. Thankfully, I'm not having to get the Lean Cuisine-y type things that have in my freezer off campus. Unfortunately, we're required to have a meal plan if we live on campus and any unused meal money gets defaulted back to campus.
I think I'm really going to like this...
Hi everyone...brand new to this so i hope ts helpful :)
Im in my first year at university and living on campus. I love being in res but the food....so hard. We are given meal cards with a certain amount of points that we have paid for and thats how we charge our meals in the caf. Im usually such a healthy eater but they charge sooo much for fruits and vegetables. I got a greek salad and a smoothie for lunch today which was 250 points. My friend got a quesadilla, fries, and desert for only 175! so unfair! im finding it super hard to keep my points while not starving :Pany tips for not falling victim to the burgers and fries?

Hi and welcome! Burgers and fries aren't necessarily bad, they've just got to be eaten in moderation... and there's got to be other healthy things to "balance" them, if you will. I try not to limit myself to strictly "healthy" foods because, I'll be honest... I LOVE my junk food sometimes. Another trick may be eating smaller meals more often. I found out, due to a medical condition, to start eating smaller meals more often. It took some getting used to but now I can't imagine anything else. It works REALLY well for me.
That was a scary long time without a post. Where is everyone?? :(
WEIGH IN:
123.0lbs
Weight Goal for next week: Maintain around 123.0!
Work-Out Goal for next week: Walk at least 1mile/day with backpack on campus + tennis + rock climb, or work out 2x!
Down 0.5lbs from 123.5 last Wednesday
Work-Outs since last Wednesday: 1x doing 40-20-15 + Tennis 3x + Walking at least 1mi per day 5x week w/ 30lb backpack
Hooray! :) I've actually been able to get out and be active this week, despite the barrage of work! You're right, Carrie - it has been a dead week... I spent 12 straight hours in the library on Monday. Yikes. Things are starting to calm down a bit now, so I should be around more :) Welcome to Sol and Chic! I agree about the bad foods bit :P I've sort of laid off of fried or greasy foods because I just hate the feeling of putting them in my system now... It almost makes me queasy. Instead, I like to occasionally indulge in a pint of Mayfield ice cream :P It HAS to be occasional though, because I really do eat a whole pint. (Usually after a good workout and with a caloric deficit saved up :P) Its a lot easier to work those things in now because I'm on maintenance :)
How's everyone doing this week?? :)
I'm still here! Things have been WILD with mid-terms coming up around here. I'm also fighting with one of my professors about the difficulty of her class. I spend massive amounts of time studying and STILL don't do well in her class. :-(
WEIGH IN:
109.4 lbs
Weight Goal for next week: Drop to 109???
Work-Out Goal for next week: Continue to walk to/from classes (approximately 3.5 miles daily) with "extra" walking. Get to gym once this week.
Down 0.9 lbs from 110.3 last Wednesday
Work-Outs since last Wednesday: 5x walking 3.5+ miles to/from class
I wasn't nearly as active as I should have been this week. I've hit a BIG wall with one of my classes and I'm spending WAY too much time in the library or with the professor. It's still not helping. In other news, one of my roomies turned 21 this week and wanted all of the roommates to go out for Chinese. I did well and ate relatively healthy (as healthy as can be expected for Chinese...). I hope next week can be better...
438
Weigh in: 152.8 :D
YAY I hit the 152's! However I'm starting to feel unmotivated so I'm going to continue till my goal but am definitely looking forward to maintenance :) But that is a long ways off, oh well.
Michelle
I'll admit...I didn't weigh in because it was horrible this week and I just didn't want to think about it, lol. I'm about to start TTOM, though. Also, I've gotten rid of most of my food so that I don't really have a lot of food in my room anymore, and I'm not eating dessert in the dining halls except on weekends. Soo hopefully I'll start going back down again soon! :)
Aww... no worries, Carrie - I'm sure it'll be better after you're through with TTOM and give yourself a few days to recover. I got under my 123 yesterday, and ended up going to watch the game with some friends at buffalo wild wings... where I had a huuuuge platter of ultimate nachos, all by myself! And when I got back (I've been a little sick...) I decided to soothe my sore throat with a big bowl of edy's slow churned vanilla ice cream. 1700 calorie day? Check.
We all slip up now and then. Just get back on the horse :) You have to give yourself a day or two off occasionally. Just call it a little vacay from CC'ing, and don't feel bad about getting back to business. :) We'll be all better in a Wednesday or two!
