Fending off The Freshman Fifteen...

Quote  |  Reply

For those in college, or those quickly approaching it, beware!!! The Freshman Fifteen - the bane of college calorie counters everywhere - is ready to take a new group of victims on campuses nationwide this fall!

For those who have felt the pain of the 15lbs of cafeteria food, hanging out in the dorm, not having your highschool extracurriculars, and just being too darned lazy to get out and about, join me in losing that weight! :) As an upcoming junior in college, i'm still waging war against the last 10lbs - who's with me?!?

*EDIT*

August 4th, 2008

To anyone just seeing this topic, please know that you're still welcome to join us! There are voluntary weigh-ins each Wednesday if you're interested. Whether you're headed to college, in it, or leaving it we're happy to have you! :D

So I guess I should weigh in...I was 148.8 this morning :/.  I know why though...it was because I ate a bunch of candy right after all the election stuff last night.  Sometimes it seems like I can eat whatever I want earlier in the day, but if I eat anything at night my weight shoots up the next morning.  I put the rest of my candy away in my closet though so I won't just sit at my desk and eat it anymore.  I couldn't bring myself to put it in the trash like I probably should, lol.

Goal for next week: 147.8

I get to go to the gym tonight yaaay :).  I really do miss running...

WEIGH IN:

109.3 lbs

Weight Goal for next week: Drop to 109?

Work-Out Goal for next week: Continue to walk 3.5+ miles with 20 lb. bookbag; work out with Cardio Salsa DVD minimum of 1x; visit campus gym?

Down .1 lbs from 109.4 lbs last week

Work-Outs since last Wednesday: Walking 3.5 miles total 5x/week with 20 lb bookbag; Cardio Salsa DVD 1x; attempted to go to the campus gym and was THROUGHLY grossed out!

EHHH! Why do I feel like I've bottomed-out at about 110?? Although, I did find a REALLY powerful motivator to stay out of my fridge late at night (at least for me)... I've covered my fridge with pictures of my sailor and I at my smallest. It makes me feel REALLY old (the pictures were taken almost 5 years ago now...) but it's motivation to stay out so I can get that size again.

Weigh in 151.2 and trying to crack into the 150's!

I've been eating too many snacks and larger portions, so my goals are to cut back on my portions :)

Ugh.  So I drank a little last night and came back and ate a whole bunch of candy...yuck.  I'm pretty sure I'll be drinking again tonight, so my goal tonight is not to eat anything when I'm drinking.  No drunk munchies for me!!

Going to the gym now, yay :).

Edited to add: Just got back from the gym...I was only planning on running two miles, but when I finished that I was like eh, why not, I'll do one more.  So I ended up doing three, which isn't all that much, but considering how often I have (or haven't) been working out lately, I thought it was pretty good :).

Update: I saw 150.0 for the first time yesteday! so i've lost 10 pounds and onto my last five. I was pretty excited because I hadn't dropped at all for amonth. But I'm eating smaller portions now and it appears to be paying off. I'm hoping to have the last five off by christmas, but we'll see :)

WEIGH IN:

122.5lbs

Weight Goal for next week: Stick around 123.0!

Work-Out Goal for next week: Walk at least 1mile/day with backpack on campus + tennis + rock climb, or work out 2x!

No Change from 122.5 last Wednesday

Work-Outs since last Wednesday: Walking at least 1mi per day 5x week w/ 30lb backpack + Walking 3 mi (Saturday)

Well, I didn't do very well with my challenge this week... I had a huge honors finance test yesterday and have a marketing one today, and its kept me so busy!!! /kicks self. I'm going to get in my 2 workouts before next week's weigh in. I've GOT to get back on track. Oh! But as a little bit of good news, I've gotten a bit lazy recently, and for like the last week, I haven't been logging food... But I also haven't gained, which makes me really happy. Maybe that marks that my lifestyle change REALLY was a lifestyle change? :) I just know when to stop now! That made me excited anyways ^_^

Michelle - Way to go!!! I'm so excited for you :D That's huge that you're finally down to 150! Keep it up, girl!

Carrie - My drinking snack of choice? Cheerios. Not the honey kind, just regular. Z cup is only 110cal, so I just take a big ziploc. They're good for munching, whole grain, and a bit like bread in your system, so they put a little weight (not literally) in your belly before you drink. So far, so good, if you're interesting in trying that. WTG with the running, btw :D

Mmm yeah.  About that weigh in.  I was *cringe* 149.8 this morning.  But - I have a plan!  This is basically it: three meals a day, two snacks, no food after 8 pm, work out three days a week.  Also, instead of getting dessert in the dining hall after dinner, I've been getting hot tea, which I especially love since it's been cold and rainy all week :/.  It's the night snacking that's really been killing me though, which is why I decided on the no eating after 8:00 thing.  It's just frustrating sometimes when my skinny suite mates are sucking down ramen and mac and cheese at like 11:00, lol.  Oohh well...some people are just blessed with amazing metabolisms, I guess!

The scale will start going back down next week...it will!!

WEIGH IN:

109.3 lbs

Weight Goal for next week: Drop to 109?

Work-Out Goal for next week: Continue to walk 3.5+ miles with 20 lb. bookbag; work out with Cardio Salsa DVD minimum of 1x; visit campus gym for "Cardio Dance Party" class 2x (DVD and class dependent on each other, when I do one I won't do the other)

STUCK at 109.3 lbs

Work-Outs since last Wednesday: Walking 3.5 miles total 5x/week with 20 lb bookbag; Cardio Salsa DVD 2x; decided to go "Cardio Dance Party" class at the gym (Discovered that the group classes aren't QUITE as gross because you're not using the machines)

I've decided that I'm stuck around 109-110. Any and all suggestions for getting out of this rut are welcome!

weigh-in 151.8 Up almost two pounds from 150 but I hurt my shoulder and have been on a bunch of pain meds, so I blame those,

Yeah...what I said about the scale going down this week?  It didn't happen, lol.  I started TTOM this morning, though, so I blame that!

Don't feel bad.. my weigh-in is almost EXACTLY like it was except I only went to the gym class once. It's getting MAJOR cold here so I'm doing well to just get to and from classes with as much as my joints are hurting. Maybe I'll do better next week, I'll stick to the same goals as last week for this upcoming week as well.

Hi all!  This thread is a great idea! Tongue out.  I would love to join!  I'm a freshman in college right now and focusing on being healthy.  I'd ideally like to lose about 10 lbs, but don't really have a set goal date.  I just want to do it slowly, becuase I know from experience if I lose it too quickly I just make up for it in bingesEmbarassed.

I don't have a scale here at school (I'm almost thankful of that because before I was an obsessive weigher.)  So my weigh-ins might be a little sporadic.  Last time I checked was Nov.2 at 138.8.  I'm really trying to get a routine here at school to go work out.  I've always been pretty active.  I even enrolled in weight training classes (.2 credit!!).  I also have some bingeing issue that I'm thinking I overcame (last time was around Halloween) *knock on wood*

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Okay I think this is a fabulous idea!

My current weight is 152.

Id like to get down to 120, ideally!

Soo lets do this!

Welcome to Berry and Megy! I hope you two find the support here you're looking for. I know I have and currently have lost about 10 pounds :) So keep up the good work and we're here for you,

Michelle

Well I know I'm not doing na amazing job with my diet. I doubt I'm eating 1500-1600 calories, more liek 17-1800. But since I don't have a date set that I need to lose the weight by its ok, its just coming off a bit more slowly. But I'm down to 149.6! so less than five pounds left till I hit my goal weight!

OOO I'm excited!  Sometimes I really love my college!  Right now we have this optional 'Healthy Holiday Challenge'.  On Monday before Thanksgiving break, we go in and they record our weight.  After chrismas break is over (for us around mid-January), we go and weigh in again.  If we maintained OR lost weight, we are rewarded with money!!  Yay!!  This makes trying to lose weight more fun!  Anybody else have any programs like that around their school?

On a side note, I'm excited/nervous to go home in a few days!  I havn't weighed myself for a month and I think I can tell I've made progress!  I'm also really looking forward to the Thanksgiving food--our cafeteria food is terrible :-(.  Mmmmm...my dads homeade pecan pie.  Remember, the key is portion size!

Michelle...I've been exactly the same as you the last few days - 151.8 on Wednesday and 149.6 today.  Weeeeiiiiiiird :P.

Welcome berry and megy!!  I always love new people :).  Berry, I'm super jealous...I wish my school would give me money for losing weight!!  All my school does is take my money, haha.

So I've been trying something new this past week, and I think I like it.  I haven't been logging my food, but I've just been trying to eat healthier.  Also, I know about how many calories I should have for each meal/snack to stay under my calorie limit, and I feel like I'm a decent judge of the amount of calories in most things now, so logging isn't really that necessary.  I just felt like logging everything was making me focus more on the calories than on being healthy, which is not what I wanted!!  I've probably been going over my calorie limit a little bit, but I've managed to cut way down on the night snacking, so yay!!  And TTOM is almost over, so hopefully the scale will start going in the right direction again, lol!  I know Thanksgiving break is going to be bad though...traveling Wednesday, which is always hard, then Thanksgiving, then probably going out to eat with friends and stuff...gah.  Oh well, I guess I'll just have to do the best I can!

How was everybody's Thanksgiving??  I had a great time, but ate way too much!  I was so happy to get to my mini-goal weight of 135, the DAY before Thanksgiving...grrr.  Unfortunately, Thanksgiving led to a 5 day binge fest...today being the worst...yuck.  I just got back to school today and im just kinda stressed.  Well, tomorrow is a new day..I'm not going to let this turn into a 3 month binge fest like last time!!  How is everybody else doing??

Hey everyone!!! :D

Sorry I've been MIA lately - Its super-busy finals time; I'm sure you're all going through it too... and with the holidays, its just really hard to find time >_< I'm glad to see that everyone's doing well, though, and that we have some new faces :D Welcome!!!

So, on the personal front, I have good news and bad news. The bad news... is that I didn't keep up with my November challenge :/ I was awful and went to the gym like 2x all month, plus 1 rock climbing trip. AND its super cold, so I've been taking the bus everywhere.

The goooood news however... is that I'm maintaing my weight at around 122-124lbs WITHOUT calorie counting :D I've been CC free for about 2.5 weeks and I've managed to finally feel when I'm full and just stop! Its great :D I feel like I can have anything now as long as I stop when I'm full and as long as I'm moderate with it. :) I've definitely gained some fluff since I've stopped the workouts, but its alright! Nothing a few weeks of exercise won't bring back, and I'm glad to be maintaining in a healthy range.

Since I've quit using the calorie counting function on the website, I'm not on as much... I still weigh every day and log my weight on here a few times a week. It took 10 months, but I feel like I've really changed my lifestyle now! :)

So hats off to those of you still pursuing your goals :) I know how hard it gets, but you can do it! Remember that its for happiness, for health, but most of all for YOU. I hope you're all having a wonderful holiday season, and I'll still try to duck in a few times a week! :D /hugggggs to all of you!

Okay, so I've actually been good the last few days, going to the gym and avoiding late night binges, and somehow I'm up from 150 to 153...how does that happen??

I suppose it could have something to do with TTOM, but that's not supposed to happen for another five days at least.
