I have a few questions...
Alright, so I'm very new at working out (to say the least), and am recovering from anorexia. I'm at a normal weight (currently around 130 at 5'5.5" because of some HORRRIBLE binges a couple of weeks ago...but usually around 120-123lbs. so guessing and hoping it's water weight), but would like to get toned. I'm extremely lazy, so I've hardly ever given being active a second thought, but that's got to change. So, I was supposed to start working out on Sunday, but my mom had to be admitted into the hospital for several days (that's a different story), so I didn't have transportation to go to the gym. However, tomorrow is my first day.
So now that you've gotten the back story, here are my questions:
1. Since I'm wanting to get toned and in shape, I'm thinking about doing some light cardio and strength training to start out. I really have no idea what I'm doing here. I'm guessing walking on the treadmill and lifting weights? How long should I do this and how much weight should I lift. Lol. My mom works out, and she said she'd show me several things if she's able to, but I don't want to get there and not know what to do if she isn't able to. Haha
2. How many days should I go to the gym? I really want to see quick results since summer is RIGHT around the corner, so I'm thinking around 3 days a week to start out (since that's all I can fit in without doing it two days in a row, and my mom wants me to have a rest day to start out), and then once I've been doing it for a while start going 4 days a week. Does this sound alright?
3. Would it be too much for me to start running once I get in better shape? Every time I mention it to my mom she looks nervous, but doesn't say anything. I suppose that's because I'm going on and on about how I want to go to the gym a lot now, possibly start a class like yoga or pilates once school's out for summer, and then start running once I get into better shape, etc...etc...etc....
and last, but not least...
4. Is there a certain time of day that I should go to work out? Like in the early morning (since I'm awake rather early), right after school since I get home at 4:00, or in the evening before dinner around 6:00, or after dinner around 8:00??
As you can tell, I'm clueless.... But thank you for dealing with me!
I'm not expert, but a couple of words of advise...
Everything will depend on the kind of shape you are currently in.
Take signals from your body. If you push yourself too hard and hurt yourself, strain your muscles or get overly sore you will be less likely to keep it up.
Get help with the weights. If you are doing a move wrong you could be wasting your time, or (again) hurt yourself.
Check out the Exercise tab on this site. There is a beginers section with lots of good advice.
Congrats on getting started and having such enthusiasm!
Thanks, Kehudson! I read several things from the "Beginner's Corner" and it did help some with telling me how many days I should start with and how much weight and how many reps and sets I should do (I'm a little confused about all of that though...)
You're a big help!
many eating disorder psychologists, experts, doctors, etc. recommend that ppl in recovery stay away from anything more than light exercise for at least a year. i agree w/them.
if i read your post, i see you're already "explaining away" the healthy weight you're at, as though you have no intention of staying at 130. though i can understand how tough recovery is, i think it's tough ENOUGH--w/o complicating it w/calories burned during exercise and all of the mixed messages you get at the gym.
go for a walk. do some stretching. meditate. but let your body heal before you start signing it up for running, pilates and anything other activity you can think of. i'm not saying this to be discouraging, but rather to make sure you're okay (sites like this, that are about over health but geared for ppl looking to shed weight, can spell trouble for ppl who need to learn to live w/their bodies and accept them as they are). i'm sure you'll get to a point where exercise is fine and dandy, but i don't think that point is right now.
I understand that, but I just want to feel good about myself. I know that exercising won't make me "normal" again, but I really do think that it will make me feel better about the way I look if I have more muscle and am toned. Thank you for your insight though, I appreciate it. I will make sure to keep all of this in consideration when making a final decision.
Perhaps if you engaged in exercise that was more specifically goal-oriented in order to take the focus off your body and put it on achieving a more profoundly egoistic goal. Realizing these goals would likely help your psychology, helping you feel 'normal,' because you will gain a sense of self value that is less related to you physical image and more related to your physical sense of well being and efficacy.
Maybe you could join a city league soccer team, start training for a 5K race (only if you have a specific race in mind), take martial arts, or something like that. In fact, I think martial arts would be an excellent place for a girl to start -- self defense is an important skill all women should have.
Cheers and best wishes.
