Is too much fiber bad?
I have been eating a lot of fiber lately and was wondering is too much bad for you?
too much of anything is never good. it's great that you're upping your fiber intake, but just make sure you also up your water intake too. fiber is bulky and if you consume too much of it without enough water it will have an inverse effect and cause you to constipate rather than "clean out!" ha.. it happened to me :\ so just make sure you up both at the same rate and you'll be ok.
You should only be increasing your fiber intake by 5g/week. If you get too much all at once you will suffer from bloating, cramping, and ironically, constipation. We just talked about fiber today in my nutrition class and a good goal for adult women is 25g a day. Ulitmately with the way our diets have prgressed, we could be eating up to 95g/day. Our diets have evolved but our bodies and fiber intake haven't. Just make sure to drink a glass of water with every high fiber meal and to increase 5g/week!
This actually happened to me during the initial weeks. I upped by Fiber by a lot. I never measured, but I probably ate about 15-30g (never measured before) and now I eat about 50g+. Initially when I increased I felt gassy, bloated, and constipated for a week.
Your body will adapt, but from my experience and from what I have read, you should only gradually increase Fiber, and when you do increase it, ,make sure you drink lots of water. I feel great now though, so don't worry about me. :0)
But that's awesome that you're increasing your Fiber, it's important to eat a good amount of fiber.
