Fiber foods?

Quote  |  Reply
I need more fiber but I hate fiber cereals. Right now I eat oatmeal and lots of fruits and veggies but I'm stuck on the same few and I'm STILL not getting enough fiber. Are there any tastey foods that have a particularly high fiber content?

Whole wheat bread? Brown rice?  Beans are particularly good.

Check out this site for a list of fiber content in a bunch of foods.

whole wheat pastas toooo. they look brown but when you cook them they lighten up.
You can sprinkle milled flax on to your oatmeal or even bake with it (replacing the oil) -- and it has the added plus of being high in Omega-3 fatty acids.  And Ronzini has a line of pasta called Smart Taste with 6g of fiber/6g of protein in every serving -- and it is regular pasta (180 cals per cup -cooked)

Oh Ya, I bought whole wheat pancake mix, but haven't tried it yet.
You can start baking with wheat bran (tonsss of fiber). Can make fiber muffins / breads / pancakes ...really anything with it.

Bran pancakes in the morning would probably be the easiest way to get the fiber normally.
Fiber One Breakfast Bars are the greatest and they have 9grams of Fiber! I personally highly recommend them!  Kashi bars also have 4 g of fiber. These are both found on the cereal isle in the store!

On a normal day I get 50+ grams of fiber without even really trying... I don't do the fiber cereals or bars either, I get all my fiber from these foods...

  • Asian pears have 9.9 grams of fiber
  • Black beans (cooked) 1 cup has 19.4 grams of fiber
  • Great Northern beans (cooked) 1 cup has 16 grams of fiber
  • Kidney beans (cooked) 1 cup has 19.4 grams of fiber
  • Chickpeas (cooked) 1 cup has 12.0 grams of fiber
  • Brown lentils (cooked) 3/4 cup has 5.5 grams of fiber
  • Red lentils (cooked) 1 cup has 6.4 grams of fiber
  • Raspberries 1/2 cup has 4.6 grams of fiber

I make all of my beans/legumes (including chickpeas and lentils) from dry bags... no canned.  I cook them in plain water and then spice the invididual servings so I can add the calories correctly.

You can find a complete alphabetical list of fiber in foods here

Hope I helped! Laughing

I, too, love the Fiber One Oats and Chocolate bars.  They are awsome!  The best tasting bar I've ever had, really.  I have to have one a day.  Love 'um!

Right?! the fiber one peanut butter bars are amazing. so many pb chips in it...i haven't had the chocolate one in a real long time, so i forget what it tastes like but i remember flipping over that one too. i hope they're next flavor has something along the lines of cookies n cream...or strawberry cheesecake..or smores!
Me too...me too!  Love the Fiber One bars!  I can't believe they are actually good for me!  They taste good!  Cool
I googled 'fiber in foods' and kept a list.  These are my highest fiber choices.  (besides cereal)

  • 9= 1 C turnip greens
  • 8=1 C blackberrys, (I eat the frozen)
  • 7.3= 1/2 C kidney beans
  • 15.6= 1 C lentils (I make a soup)

I posted this on another forum, but it applies here in case you haven't come across it!

My favorite hi-fiber finds:

Gnu foods Flavor & Fiber bars (130-140cal, 13g fiber- i like em all except cran-orange

Fiber One Oats & Chocolate bars (140 cal, 9g fiber)- wow so tasty

Atkins Advantage Caramel bars for a good mix of fiber and protein (150-160cal, 9g fiber, 10g protein)

Along with those, Kashi GoLean topped with fruit and skim milk and Fiber One when used with yogurt or fruit (like granola) are great. Kashi also has bars (like the pumpkin flax) that aren't bad, but i'd prefer one of the above.

Ooh, thought of another great one-- Kellog's AllBran Crackers both flavors are amazing, you'd never guess they're filled with fiber!

Each LaTortilla Factory multigrain wrap (large size) has 12 grams of fiber.  If you also fill it up with any combination of beans, brown rice, and other veggies, you are talking some serious fiber in there!  And delicious and so filling!
hey kindoflikesarah...i hope no one lights a match behind you with all those beans you are eating...haha just kidding
There is a large list of food sorted by fiber content, so you can find out how much fiber is in your food. Link is here for high fiber food

Kellogs also makes some All-Bran fiber drink mixes in flavors like lemonade and ice tea. I really like them and they have 10g of fiber, 20 calories and are not grainy and gross like metemucil.

Try Nutiva Hemp Powder Drink - you can add anything to it - GOBS OF FIBER AND PROTEIN - 0 SWEETNER - Best Hemp Protein Powder (shake mix) I've Found.  I drink it everyday.  You can add fruits/veggies/juices, etc. to Nutiva or just use it as it was meant to - IF YOU NEED FIBER - THIS ONE'S EASY - IT'S A SUBSTITUE SNACK/MEAL and now Nutiva even has FLAVORS - find Nuvita's homepage since they've got the best price (and you can order over the net or most Health Stores have it) - it's the best mix I've found - especiall best tasting!  It's also ORGANIC and they make sure NO HEXANE is used in the process.

I use the original - but there's one out now with 37% PROTEIN and 43% FIBER, 0 NET CARBS, AND NO HEXANE USED - THAT'S A BIG DEAL.  I've purchased from them for years - so depending on HOW MUCH FIBER you need/want - they've got it all - the newly flavored ones have less fiber/protein and more carbs - but there's something for everyone.

They have awesome customer service and I've never had any troubles - I also use Hemp Oil for salads - and Hemp Nuts for snacking or toss on salads.

And if you like the news about Acai, Noni, Pommegranite - I'd suggest you do a search for "organic xxxxxxxx" and buy them in a tub and you can add to the Nutiva.  And I also LLOOOVEE ALMONDS.  LOVE THICK SHAKES!  APPLES AND CARROTS ARE GOOD WITH THIS TOO - TOSS IN ANYTHING!  Hope this help !!!

BEST HEALTH TO YOU!

Fiber one pop tarts are sooooooo good!!!!!

I also like to make a high fiber (8g) smoothie out of a fiber one strawberry yogurt, 1 cup of frozen strawberries, and half a cup of skim milk.  It's great for breakfast or a snack at around 200 calories.

mmm... when i'm in the mood for a fiber fix, i'll sautee 1 onion, and a garlic in a little bit of olive oil. then add in a can of white beans. it DEF. clears you out if you know what i mean :p

I know you said you didn't like fiber cereals, and I didn't think I liked them either.  However, have you ever tried the Fiber One Honey Clusters cereal?  It actually tastes really good, and I was very shocked!  It's kind of like honey-flavored special K cereal, if you can imagine that!  Really yummy.  Give it a try! It has 51% of your recommended daily intake of fiber!
