Fiber
Can someone tell me what foods/snacks are high in fiber without having to take in a bunch of calories and carbs. Thanks
Reason: Moved from Weight Loss forum to Foods forum
Fiber One cereal. I love it; it is so yummy!
Also, many vegetables like celery are full of fiber and very low cal. :)
Haven't tried the fiber One yet, but I do eat alot of celery just because it is low in calories. Thanx for the info.
This is not a food, but a supplement. Benafiber is great. Has 12% of your daily fiber needs per one rounded teaspoon. You can add it to water, juice or to foods. It doesn't expand, doesn't make you bloated or give you gas like other fiber supplements. It has no calories, no carbs, no sugar, no preservatives, etc. Benafiber is also 100% vegetable fiber (chicory root).
I find it hard to get all the fiber I need in a day, so I use it once or twice a day.
Foods - Fruits and vegetables. Specially broccoli.
I will definently have to try benefiber, especially if it doesn't cause bloating or gas (I hate that).
Question: What is the recommended amout of fiber a person should consume daily?
Fiber is found in many "whole" foods. So anything like fruits and veggies (seeded fruits, where you eat the seeds, such as strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, etc, have more fiber than something without seeds. Also, eating the skin of fruit/veggie will give you more fiber, such as the skin of an apple, etc), whole grains (brown rice instead of white, etc), whole wheat (don't be tricked... make sure its 100% whole wheat, not just 25% whole wheat, and 75% enriched wheat. You can make sure by reading the ingredients list) all are great sources of fiber. I don't even think about fiber anymore because I eat so many of these things anyway that I usually surpass my fiber need.
I think they recommend around 30 grams? but I also think I've heard a range from 25-40 grams per day.
(oh, and anything by kashi has a great fiber count)
I enjoy a tablespoon or two of ground flax seed (flax meal) with my oatmeal, on a salad, or in yogurt. It's very high in fiber & healthy fats.
Aquafina just came out with a new flavored water, Alive. They have a peach mango one that has 25 calories a bottle and 5 grams of fiber. I keep them on hand for when I'm at the low end on my daily requirements. Also, pears are high in fiber and fairly cheap right now and the La Tortilla Factory tortillas have 13 grams of fiber and I think around 50-80 calories. After reading this the above posts I'm definitely checking out flax seed though. I try to get between 25-35 a day, it helps a ton in my weight loss, I feel fuller from high fiber foods so it's WAY easier to stay under my calorie goal. Good luck!
You guys have been a very big help. Thanx so much for all of your replys.
I really like the Kashi Go Lean cereal that is high in protein and fiber. It tastes really good and has a bit of a sweet flavor, so don't be shocked by the look of it (it reminds me of rabbit food or something). I think a cup have 140 calories, 10 grams of fiber, and 14 grams of protein.
I sprinkle a little fiber one into oatmeal, and use Silk Plus Fiber instead of cows milk. Eat a couple of apples for snacks, and some raw broccoli. Thats cool because when I'm starving in the afternoon, I'll eat anything broccoli is great fiber so it fills you up, and a great source of calcium too. You can cram a lot of fiber and few calories a day in like this.

Benefibre says that we all need 25 grams of fibre a day, however most people only get half that. They suggest 1-2 rounded teaspoons in of Benefiber into at least 1/2 cup of any beverage of soft food (hot or cold). Stir well to disolve. FOr Adults, do this, 1 too 3 times a day, depending on your fiber needs. 2 rounded teaspoons (6 grams), which is 24% of your daily fiber needs.
You have to remember that when using a fibre supplement, it only works if you drink a lot of fluids everyday. Al least 8 large glasses of water. If you don't drink enough, then taking the fiber won't help.
They have Fiber One Yogurt now too...not sure if putting flax seed in that yogurt would be good though the size of a container is pretty small ....I guess you could try it with or without though
By itself they have like 5g fiber and they taste pretty good at least the Strawberry I tried.
I love the Fiber One granola bars that are out now.
9 grams fiber, only 140 cal and 4 grams fat in the Oat & Chocolate
9 grams fiber, 150 cal and 4.5 fat in the Oat & Peanut Butter.
They very tasty...I have them as my desert 3-4 times a week. I think they are probably one of the better granola bars I've ever had. I'm a chocoholic, but surprisingly I liked the Oat & Peanut better - it's got what appears to be lots of carmel in it. And the price is pretty much the same as all the other commercial granola bars that are really nothing more than glorified candy bars.

Yes, I have even put fiber one on my salads instead of croutons!
I think the thing about fiber is you MUST drink lots of water to go with it or you will make cement blocks for poops. [not like swimming in water but you definitely need to remember] - and -
give your body time to get use to it or you will get real bloated and gassy - so maybe build up.
Right now I am pretty consistently getting around 35 grams a day by using my half cup of fiber one plus the natural vegetable fiber in the foods I eat.
beans, Grape Nuts, every day. I also eat 7 grain bread when I eat sandwiches.
I have looked into fiber supplements but they are expensive for what they provide.
