Fiber Question

Quote  |  Reply
Good Morning,

First let me say this site is awesome, I have been on here since the end of May and just reading all of your posts have been helpful!

I have a question about fiber.......how do you get enough? Sounds silly, but the best I can do is about 15 grams and I know I should be getting more into me.  I do eats lots of fruits and veggies. Normally I have some kind of fruit in the morning, and for a snack... and salad at at least one meal if not two.  And example would be, yesturday I had homemade fruit salad for breakfast, pineapple, cantalope, honeydew melon and grapes. Lunch was a tomato, cottage cheese with chives, cucumbers, and two slices of deli roast beef (sliced thin). Dinner was a huge helping of a veggie mix I make, broccoli, fresh corn and carrots sauteed in a little chicken stock and garlic) homemade potato salad and two thin  slices of turkey breast... and yet I still only came up to 14 grams of fiber.

I dont eat alot of bread, so switching to a whole wheat bread is not a option ( that and I really dont care for it).

Thank you ahead of time, for all of your suggestions and help.

Debi

One of the best ways I know is to eat high fiber breakfast cereals.  I like Kashi Golean because it also has a lot of protein.  All Bran, Bran Buds and others are loaded with fiber and you only have to eat a small bowl - 1/2 cup of All Bran does it.  Whole wheat bread only has a couple grams of fiber a slice anyway, so you're right about that, but every little bit helps, so eat whole grain whenever you can.
Legumes have a lot of fibre. I regularly eat a line of soups with flavours like black bean, split pea, couscous and lentils.. that helps get my fibre up. I do eat a lot of whole grain bread too, and I have porridge for breakfast (3 grams a serving). I've never had a problem getting enough fibre.

Thanks for the tips... I will pick up some all bran on my way home from work.  Mind you I might have to work my way up to it... I never ate breakfast till I went on a diet.  Which is why I started with the fresh fruits in the morning, it was something I normally ate.

I love soups, but this time of year with the heat and sometimes humidity I just cant seem to get into them! That could be being brought up in NewEngland.. soup was a winter time meal.
I put all-bran in my yogurt and fruit for breakfast. I cut up some strawberries and banana and put some vanilla yogurt, a 1/4 cup of all-bran and a 1/4 cup of kashi golean crunch with it.

I had that for breakfast this morning and I already have 10g of fibre.

If you don't know if you like it, you could start with less of the cereal in it.
Here is the list of fruits and vegetables high in fiber:

My number one choice is fresh raspberries.

Asparagus
Beans (string, green)
Broccoli
Brussels sprouts
Cabbage (red, white)
Carrots
Cauliflower
Corn, canned
Kale leaves
Parsnip
Peas
Beets
Potatoes
Spinach
Squash, summer
Sweet potatoes
Turnips
Zucchini
Bean sprouts
Celery
Cucumber
Lettuce, all varieties
Mushrooms
Onions
Red and green peppers
Tomato
Apples
Apricot
Apricot, dried
bananas
Blueberries
Cantaloupe
Cherries
Grapefruit
Grapes
Oranges
Peaches
Pears
Pineapples
Plums
Lemon
Prunes
Raisins
Raspberries
Strawberries
Watermelon
Kidney beans
Lentils
Lima beans

I actually spoke to a dietician last week on this issue, among other things. Kashi Heart to Heart is good but you should consider a suppliment if you can't get your fiber up. It can only do good, there is no harm in using citricel etc..
you can try adding flax seed to some of your food too.   I'll throw some into yogurt or cottage cheese.   It's not so bad.
I eat lots of vegetables!! High-fiber cereal and high-fiber bread, as well. But I understand your plight; I take Fiber Choice chewable supplements, as well. I get between 32-35 grams of fiber a day. :)

More great ideas....  I did pick up some All Bran Buds...the regular All Bran in the stick form just didnt look appetizing! lol  Our store doesnt carry the Kashi Golean. But I did get some yogurt and I always have fruit on hand.

Ialuixh, thanks for the list of high fiber fruits and veggies,  I eat pretty much everything on it, mind you I would love to know what physllium husks are... never even heard of them.   If all else fails I will ck with my dr about taking the Fiber Choice chewable supplements lizzlebizzle suggested.

I appreciate all your help, thanxs
how about oatmeal, popcorn, bean dip made by mashing up black beans or pintos with some garlic and hot sauce, hummus, tempeh, and other "grainy" things?  Do you eat pancakes?  You could make them with some oatmeal and either flax or psyllium in them for fiber.  Good luck!
