Hello everyone,
I have another question for you guys. =)
It's come to my attention that I could do with more fiber in my diet. I was at the grocery store yesterday looking for something as simple as a powder to add to a smoothie or something, but all I could find were entire health bars and meal-replacement shakes, neither of which I'm interested in.
Moreover, I have no idea how much my daily intake should be!(I'm 20 years old, 5' 6" and 156 lbs, if that counts for anything).
Do you guys have a vitamin or a powder supplement that you use? How much should I be looking to take?
Thanks so much for all of your help, you guys are fantastic!
Try eating an apple a day. No kidding. I don't buy fiber supplements. I tried Metamucil once and hated it. It's not the taste, just couldn't chug it down before it coagulated. Cabbage slaw (tri-colored) is good to eat also. I use a FF Italian salad dressing on it instead of mayo.
There's lots of fiber supplements out there--Benefiber, Metamucil, Citracel, etc. It might be easier to find them at a pharmacy, like CVS or RiteAid. I think the recommendation for fiber is 25-35 gm per day.
Personally, I would rather get my fiber with food. I start out my day with 1/2 cup FiberOne (14 gm fiber). At lunch I have an apple (4 gm) and some baby carrots (2 gm). For snack, I'll have a pear (5gm). At dinner, I'll have some broccoli (3 gm) and after dinner I'll have an orange (3 gm fiber). Grand total: 31 grams of fiber! Isn't that yummier than drinking artificially flavored, congealed supplements?
Fiber supplements are a waste of $ and calories
Salad spinach whole grains veggies fruits w/ skins (apples) and such are a much easier way to get real fiber.
I had sever colon issues and fiber supplements didn't help - only real live foods.
I use a fiber supplement I got at CVS. I forget the brand, but it's called Weight Control. I buy the tablet kind, it's strawberry flavored (sugar free), but the tablets really taste good, it's like candy. I'm sure that getting the right amount of fiber naturally IS better for you, but this is helpful too.
A fiber boost right here. Thinking it would work with any veggie peels, or even fruit ones (think apple/pear), but the seasonings would be different (cinnamon, nutmeg, pinch sugar etc).
Oatbran is all pretty much fiber. An exellent addition to oatmeal.

What about wheat bran? 7g fiber and 30 calories per 1/4 cup.
If you want a powdered fiber supplement, get it at Walgreens... their storebrand one has 5g fiber in a heaped teaspoon. I don't use it myself, but DH does because he never gets enough veggies! You just stir it into your food and eat as usual. My preferred 'fiber supplement' is a fiber one bar. Yum!
What is interesterified fat?
Interesterification is a food processing term. It is one of three techniques used to modify fats: hydrogenation (to make trans fat)... Read more
