How much fiber is in fiber supplements?

I understand that 30 grams of fiber is a good recommended daily amount. I take Fibercon and also generic Metamucil, but neither product label states the number of grams. How can I know what the grams of fiber are that I am taking?
Answer
Fiber supplements are not all the same. FiberCon® is does not contain dietary fiber because it is made from a synthetic agent, calcium polycarbophil; however, the agent closely resembles psyllium fiber in appearance and action. Metamucil® is actually made from psyllium seed husks. Psyllium husk powder provides 4 – 4 ½ grams of fiber per 1 rounded teaspoon and capsules contain 2 – 2 ¼ grams of fiber per 4-capsule serving. As a reference, one cup of beans provides 19 grams of fiber and one cup of 100% bran cereal provides 17 grams. Neither supplement provides the vitamins and minerals in high fiber foods. Both supplements must be taken with plenty of liquid to work.
