Fiber and weight loss?

Quote  |  Reply

Can anyone explain to me how fiber affects weight loss? I just started on this site and it is very apparent I'm not getting enough...which seems to be 25? And what foods should I be looking for?

as far as i know, fiber doesn't affect weight-loss. whether you're trying to gain weight, lsoe weight, or maintain your weight; you need fiber.

the purpose of fiber is to give you some "roughage" per se, to help you #2. 25 grams a day is how much you should aim for; although somedays you'll be over your limit and somedays you'll be under.

to get more fiber in your diet, you should be looking for whole grains vs. white (like whole grain crackers, rice, breads, pastas, etc), high-fiber cereals (fiber is really good, in my opinion), fruits and vegetables. instead of drinking fruit and vegetables juices, eat the real fruit so you get the fiber. nuts and nut butter are also quite full of fiber.

keep in mind though, the more fiber you get, the more water you need to drink to compensate it so you don't get constipation.

Fiber isn't just for weight loss, fiber helps you feel full and pulls toxic stuff from your body. If you get enough fiber in each and every day you will prevent colon cancer and lower your risk of heart disease. Most people get about 15 grams a day which is way too little. It's mainly because people don't eat enough whole grains, fruits and vegetables. I personally aim for at least 35 grams a day, and I eat A LOT of fruits and vegetables. Bottom line eat less animal products, up your intake of whole grains, fruits and vegetables and you'll lose weight just by doing that.

yeah, it doesn't necessarily help you lose weight by say...increasing your metabolism or something, but I think it is a huge factor in weight loss because it makes you feel fuller and you eat less. If you eat a bowl full of vegetables, you'll feel full, but you've consumed very little calories. whereas, if you eat a bowl full of like, melted cheese or something, you'll also feel full and you might have reached your calorie limit for the day. plus, that bowl full of cheese will stop you up hard core. The veggies may do the opposite. And I don't know about you, but I think poopin is fun.

I have heard that if you eat a lot of fiber ( the suggested amount dont go binging on it) that it helps clean out you intestines. cleaning out your intestines can help you lose several pounds depending on how much you cleaned out (for lack of better words) because things tend to build up in there

if you keep your intestines cleaned out by eating a lot of fiber things will move through you body faster so your body wont have as much time to adsorb all the calories or whatnot in the food, and its just better for you overall for food to go in then out and not be sitting around polluting your body.

I am NOT a doctor or any sort of expert, i just heard this on oprah and it sounds reasonable to me

Fiber is a good thing. Helps you feel full and keeps things moving.

I love Flax Seed. Put it on cereal in yogurt and is very tasty. I also like fiber one cereal.

I love Fiber One Cereal.  I also buy Fiber One Yoplait yogurt and was buying Fiber One bars, but stopped the bars due to an overwhelming amount of gas they caused.  I recently switched to Smart Taste Pasta, that has 6 g. of fiber per serving.  My hubby and 17 year old son didn't seem to notice any difference in the taste.

Here is my question:  I am eating roughly 1400 calories/day and usually get around 30 g/day of fiber, and I drink roughly a gallon of water a day.  I still wouldn't say I am regular with #2.  Probably every other day.  Am I getting to much or maybe I should reduce the amount of Fiber One products and try to get fiber from more vegies and fruit?

jfvaldez, going every other day is within the normal range - if you're going 3 or more times a week without problems like pain or having to strain hard every time, you're probably ok.

I actuall just posted this in the foods forum but I thought it might appy here as well.

I just wanted to share that I found these wraps made by a brand "La Tortilla Factory" and besides being yum and the larger ones they are pretty awsome in the nutruion facts as well!

One large wrap is only

 100 cals

3g of fat (made with exta virgin olive oil (no sat fat)

13g of of dietary fiber!!!!!

8g of protien!!! ( not bad for a carb food)

Thought that was pretty good for a wrap/soft tortilla.
