Too much fibre?

I usually get about 20 grams of fibre a day, but today I had 46. I made black bean soup and it was so good I ended up eating it for lunch and dinner. I have a feeling this will cause some sort of digestive problem, but I'm not sure whether it would be diarrhea or constipation. Does anyone know what will happen and if there's anything I can do to try to minimize the problem?

i would highly suggest drinking plenty of water to help move the fiber through your system and avoid constipation.  you may encounter some gas, bloating and/or discomfort, but probably nothing too serious. 

I binged on an entire box of fiberone cereal once and uh, had some diarrhea (but first I looked like a balloon). Just drink lots of water and it will work out....

20 grams of fiber a day is low.. you should be getting AT LEAST 25 grams per day

I easily eat 30-50 grams of fiber per day, everyday... I eat tons of vegetables! as well as shirataki noodles, and low sugar/fiberous fruit like raspberries and blackberries

I have never had serious issues, well besides bloating and gas Embarassed haha!! Eating raw vegetables will do that. The cooking process helps to break down some of the fiber and make them easier to digest... it's good to eat your plant sources as raw as possible, but cooking them is easier on the stomach

I took your advice and drank a lot of water last night and this morning. I have a bit of a stomach ache today, but not too bad.

Actually, carmen I'm not doing too bad with my intake. I did a little googling: The average American gets 11 grams of fiber a day. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) recommends that Americans double the amount of fiber they eat to between 20 and 30 grams daily. For those who wish to consume more fiber, NCI recommends that individuals not exceed 35 grams daily, because of possible adverse effects.

The avergae American gets 11 grams of fiber a day because the average american eats a poor diet based on refined carbs/sugars (white bread, white rice, pasta, candy, soda) and animal meats, and low in fruits and vegetables

your diet is probably better in comparison, but saying "well everyone else doesnt eat as much fiber as me" doesn't give you an excuse to settle... you know what I'm saying?

it's like if the class average is 55%, and you got 60% on your test... do you say "that's good enough", or do you try to do even better next time?

I'd hope you'd try to better your grade.

Evidence shows that our ancestors were capable of eating up to 100 grams of fiber per day.. they're diets were very high in plant foods, (fruits, berries, whole grains, and vegetables) The human body is perfectly capable of handling higher quanities of fiber, and it IS BENEFICIAL to do so... the positives of a high fiber diet out weigh the negatives

You shouldn't have the mentality "I shouldn't eat those raspberries, because their too high in fiber and I may go over my "limit" of 20 grams and get digestive problems"

You shouldn't limit fiber, you should eat more... fiber acts like a scrub for your insides, cleaning out the nasties (toxins, cholesterol, etc) it is important to overall health, and helps keep you full and satisfied

I wasn't focusing on the 11 grams part. I know the average American diet sucks. And I never said I would limit my intake to 20 grams. That's just what I have been averaging lately. I meant the part where it says 20-30 grams, not exceeding 35. I just wanted to point that out because your first post made it seem like I was way under, but I'm actually in the right range. Too much fibre can interfere with your absorbtion of minerals and cause stomach problems as I have learned from experience today.

All of this has nothing to do with my original question anyways, which was already resolved.
