Fibre Supplements VS Foods with Fibre

Quote  |  Reply

I don't really like foods with high fibre in them so I pretty much get no fibre.

I have this fibre powder that you mix in your water.

Does that have the same effect as food with fibre in it would?

THANKIIISS! :D <3

Supplements... whether fibre, vitamins or minerals... are no substitute for the real McCoy.  Think about it.  Companies have spent years and £millions developing baby formula, adding huge lists of the most sophisticated ingredients to simulate breast-milk...  and yet it still doesn't match up to the original.

Foods with fibre generally contain a lot of other things besides..... fruit and vegetables, for example, will have lots of vitamins & minerals, plus quite a lot of fluid and also some energy (calories).  Wholegrain foods give you fibre plus B vitamins, protein, iron and other good stuff.  Fibre powder is just fibre..... goes in one end and out the other.... might keep your guts working but isn't giving you anything in the way of nutrition or energy.

I'd suggest that you make more of an effort to eat naturally fibre-rich foods like fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, pulses/legumes, nuts/seeds and so forth.   The boost in nutrition provided by including good, wholesome foods in your diet would also help you to grow healthily and could also mean your feelings of depression become less pronounced.   A balanced diet is going to do your health & state of mind much more good in the long-run than fibre powder drinks to compensate for a poor diet.

I totally agree with gi-jane.

A fibre supplement will in no way make up for all the nutrients and goodies that fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts and wholegrain foods will give you.

If you don't like fruit or vegetables, search the forums for advice - there are a lot of threads from people learning to get over their dislike of fruits and veges and a lot of advice has already been given. Smile

No no no, I LOVE fruits & veggies!

I just hate granola and nuts and stuff, which is what I thought had all the fibre.
My mom has this fibre 1 cereal and fibre 1 bars and stuff and I just think they're gross.

The only thing I kind of like is the Kashi High Fibre cereal, it's good but I like hot things for breakfast like pancakes or toast or something. Maybe I'm too picky. :S

But thanks guys!

If you like pancakes and toast make the pancakes with wholemeal flour and make the toast from wholegrain bread to get more fibre.   Another high fibre breakfast would be 'proper' oatmeal or porridge... made from rolled oats rather than instant powder.  And have you tried muesli?  That's a lovely breakfast cereal made with toasted oats, dried fruit, nuts and other delicious bits and pieces.

Less obvious sources of fibre... eat the skin on a baked potato, brown rice rather than white, wholewheat pasta rather than white pasta.... lentils, beans, chickpeas... all kinds of great things to eat.

If you get your 5-a-day minimum fruit and veggies and if you're not constipated then you're probably getting enough fibre without resorting to drinks.  And if you need to gain weight, fibre drinks can be too filling anyway

Real food is better, but if your real food isn't giving you sufficient fiber then supplementing is okay - kinda like vitamins.  The stuff from the real food is better but take vitamins if you need to beef it up a bit.

I'm sorry you don't like Fiber One cereal and bars - I think they're fantastic.  But yeah fiber can be found in a lot of things - whole grain, veggies, fruits.  Eat them and you'll be fine.
