How can I fight depression during dieting?
Asked by yayaisready79 on Nov 07, 2009 in Weight Loss

Answer

Depression often surfaces during dieting because a low calorie diet may lack certain nutrients and because food is removed as the individual's self-medication of choice.  To prevent depression related to poor nutrition, choose a balanced diet that is not excessively low in calories and take a daily multi-vitamin/mineral supplement. In addition, physical activity, especially outdoors, can prevent and relieve depression. But if your depression is not lifted by a good diet and exercise, then it's time to see your doctor. Depression is treated by medications and psychotherapy. A family physician can prescribe medications or the doctor may refer the patient to a psychiatrist.  Both treatments are covered by most health insurers.
