I think i figured out what I want to do!!!!
So after 7 majors (yea..i know) and 2 completed years of college (after this semester)..I think I finally figured out what I want to do
Make commericals!! ...wow..that sounded stupid when I actually said (typed) it.
ANYWAY.... make commericals or something of that sort...market stuff..ya know.
I always watch on TV about how its cut throat in a marketing buisness when a main character has that job. Is it really that bad?
ALSO..i figure I would do marketing and psychology.....or marketing and sociology..i enjoy both. Is there any other classes I need to pick up since I want to do commericals..maybe some film classes or something??
I think that would fall under either film (actually making the commercials) or art (concept / storyboard / that type of stuff) or marketing (general marketing strategies and management).
Marketing major is really "fuzzy"... in that there isnt a lot of "this is how you sell things". I mean, a lot is about studies and things like that to find your target market and how to possition your product, but the actual commercial and marketing ideas is more creative and less defined by hard rules.
But marketing is moving in a lot of directions! Like viral marketing and all that other stuff...so its not all about the commercials anymore.
So, it really depends which part of "make commercials" you want to do.
Marketing is definitely a great avenue to pursue. I'm a second-year commerce major at one of Canada's top business schools, and although I'm leaning towards accounting (very lucrative) I have a strong interest in marketing as well.
I would suggest taking a general business or management course, business communications, organizational behaviour, and as many marketing and advertising courses that your school offers.
Take note that marketing and advertising are not the same thing!
Marketing includes the entire process of selling your product. Each of the elements of the marketing mix must be considered (4Ps: Product, Price, Place, Promotion) as well as your marketing research and forethought (Segmentation, Targeting, Positioning).
On the other hand, advertising is but one element of the promotional mix (a shoot off of the Promotion element of the "4Ps"). The promotional mix contains personal selling, advertising, publicity and PR, and sales promotions.
A friend of mine is interested in a similar avenue and he is taking sales courses and pychology, and another of my friends has combined her commerce degree with film. There are definitely numerous options available!!
Hope that clarified and/or helped.. and feel free to message me if you have any questions!
Emerson College in Boston, MA. Thats a really good media arts school.
Production companies/firms are the ones who actually make commericals. Advertisement agencies are the ones who come up with the ideas for the commericals.
Depending on what it is you want to do a TV production class probably won't be nesscary, but it can't hurt. And it's fun. You won't need film history or theory or anything like that. Definately stick with the Psych/Soc classes though.
