Filling Foods......

Quote  |  Reply
I started school last week. I get up in the morning, eat my bowl of cereal, get ready and leave for class. Around 8:30 my stomach is growling. So I eat a granola bar or pretzels or something like that. And I swear, 45 minutes later, it's growling again. I need something that will tie me over for a while, but I don't want it to be heavy.

My cousin turned me on to Cliff bars. They are high in protein and have like 220 calories per bar. I was going to try that as a breakfast meal replacement.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I'm game to try whatever.

Can you try replacing your bowl of cereal with a bowl of oatmeal?  You will stay full way longer.  You can also add things like chopped fruit (fresh or frozen or dried), yogurt, chopped nuts, etc.  There are TONS of threads and posts on here about yummies to add to oatmeal to mix it up and keep it something you can look forward to and enjoy every morning.  A great choice for breakfast and will keep you full way longer than almost any cold cereal.  Yes, more calories than most cereals, especially if you add things in, but you might be able to leave off the granola or pretzels or whatever else you're eating when you get hungry again, so you might actually end up eating FEWER cals AND being full and satisfied longer.

The only problem with oatmeal, I don't like it. Something about the way it looks grosses me out. Sounds weird I know.

Just about every day I have a honey-wheat, egg beaters and fat free cheese sandwich for breakfast.  It is very satisfying, easy to make (egg beaters in the microwave, muffin in the toaster....takes 2 minutes).  It is around 200 calories and keeps me satisfied 'til just about 10:30 or 11:00 (when I eat a pear or an apple)  I add hot sauce or other calorie free flavors and am good to go!
Try a Tohmas's Light English Muffin...preferably the Whole Grain variety. They've got 8 grams of fiber (30% daily) and keep me feeling full until lunch!
I was away at a camp last week, and knew I'd either sleep through breakfast or perhaps find it too tempting (damn you, bacon and hash browns!), so I brought enough Clif bars for the week.  They have pretty good nutritional stats compared to a lot of the bars out there, and I think they taste great.  Along with a piece of fruit mid-morning, they definitely satisfied me until lunch.  Luna bars are made by the same company, and are slightly smaller/lower-cal/different flavours etc, you might want to check those out.  Of course it's great to make breakfast at home, and that's what I do on a regular basis, but I'm glad I've found a ready-to-eat option that works so well for me.

What are these Luna bars I keep hearing about? And are they something you would eat in place of a meal, or is it like a snack?

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I will definitly take some of them and use them.
How about breakfast burritos with La Tortilla Factory tortillas? the ones i get have 14g of fiber per wrap. with a bottle of water, it keeps me full for a long while

you need lots of protein and fiber and less filler carbs to stay full. especially in the morning.

luna bars are like clif bars. i would say more of a snack than a meal replacer

This is your problem: everything you are eating to try to fill yourself up is pure carbohydrates!  Though carbs make you feel full INITIALLY, they will NOT keep you full.  Protein is actually the thing that sustains fullness, plus protein-rich foods are extreeeemely lower in calories than say cereal.
Try Egg Beaters.  30 calories/egg.  Try a few piece of deli turkey (about 10-20 calories a slice).  Buy protein powder and make shakes (120 calories/serving).  I constantly just try to fill up with fruits, veggies, and proteins.  Combine a ruby red grapefruit, 3 servings of egg beaters and a big glass of water, and you will stay full for a long time for less than 200 calories!
Hope I helped!
peanut butter on toasted bread :) very filling
Go for more bulk and more protein. Such as an egg white veggie scramble with a side of fresh fruit. That has protein, fiber, complex carbs, a ton of bulk, and most importantly - a lot of vitamins and minerals.
I know what you mean on this one. I started school today (well i registered late), and having read these "filling foods" threads before, I kept that in mind for breakfast. it was easy: A half a cup of egg whites, slice of fat free cheese, salt, pepper, a liiiitle water, on a La Tortilla Factory tortilla. just one tortilla has 14 grams of fiber, and come lunch time i was suprised i wasn't really hungry at all. But you should probably drink a water bottle with each meal to help with the fullness
I didn't have time to read all the other replies, but I would highly recomend those eggs that come pre-scrambled in a carton..I forgot what its called..but you just open it up and pour it in the pan and bam uve got scrambled eggs..whats good about it though is that its got way LESS CALORIES and ALOT more PROTEIN..plus its warm, which will make you feel more satisfied........
and when I said less calories, more protein, I was comparing it to normal eggs that you scramble yourself...

I have scrambled egg whites with zucchini, mushrooms, red onion, and bellpepper with a side or two of toast with pb2 on it. Packed full or protein, fiber and whole grains(depends on bread) all for only 350 calories. I am still full and its almost lunch.

My only problem with the egg beaters is the high sodium content. they taste good but they don't scramble well with veggies. Good Luck
