Wow, I'm so glad I found the group! I was just diagnosed 7 months ago with severe wheat and corn allergies. My nutritionist was suprised that I was so chubby and made a comment "most gluten intolerant people are underweight" gee thanks...I attribute my 80 pound weight gain to the allergy - now that I have it under control the weight is slowly coming off.
I'm still having problems with balancing my diet and eating out at friends/restruants and at work so I'm looking for your ideas.
Happy to join you'all
Hi,
Eating out is a real problem. Have you tried this site? http://www.glutenfreerestaurants.org/find.php
It is a shame that the US is lagging behind for instance the countries in Scandinavia when it comes to this. Up in Scandinavia for instance all the chains, McDonalds, Burger King etc offer gluten free burgers. The buns have been substituted for gluten free ones. And that cost no extra. Someone should approach them in the States and ask why this is not possible there.
I travel for work often and at hotels is can be so so. For breakfast I always bring my own glutenfree bread. If I am not sure about things I stick to fruit sallad etc.
A kitchen that is generally good is Thai. That is (to my knowledge) the only one that is in itself pretty much gluten free.
Good luck!
PS, wholefood market has a good range of gluten free products.
thank goodness for all of you. I was begining to think that I was the only person with celiac who wasn't skinny. I have 40 pounds to lose after being diagnosed about 2 years ago. While no one has asked me if I was pregnant since the gf diet has taken away the bloating, I still am having a devil of a time losing weight...especially since so many of the diets out there promote whole grains as a great way to fill up & lose at the same time. Its funny, I actually thought I would lose more when I couldn't have bread, but it turns out that most of the alternatives are high in carbs and low in fiber. if anyone has any suggestions for how a busy mom of 2 who is gluten and lactose intolerant can effectively and healthily lose weight, I'm all ears! (no pun intended, my corn-allergic buddies....(sorry, that was baaaaaad).
actually only about 10% of the people with celiac disease (CD) are skinny---most are not, but the hour long class that docs have are told to look for skinny people. Most docs do not understand celiac and the hospitals even less. I have had CD for over 5 years now.....I learn the most from the delphi sites (celiac support group) they have helped me a lot to understand it.
