I FINALLY tried them!!!
TOFU SHIRATAKI NOODLES!! :) :)
We have an all natural/organic store near where I am going to college called "MOTHER EARTH" and I have looved shopping their since I've lived here in NY...but only TODAY i stumbled across the tofu shirataki noodles ($1.89 a bag too!) and decided to buy them!
i was a little scared due to the OPINIONS of SOME people concerning them--but I LOOOVED THEM! I felt Like I was eating pasta GUILT FREE!! I mean common! 40 cal. for the WHOLE darn bag! yay!
I just rinsed-----microwaved---added a semi-spicy tomato sauce,..fresh mushrooms,..salt,..pepper---and WHALLAH! :) dinner :)
anyway--just thought I would put in my VOTE!! :)
oooh sounds delish! i try to eat as natural/organic as i can - yet i'm semi retarded in the kitchen although have pretty much mastered the toaster, microwave, and coffee maker - so these sound right up my skill level alley! :)
i just had those for the first time too. they're actually realllly good if you know how to flavor them, and the fact that you can eat 2 packs for 80 calories = win. i have to walk all the way to a little asian market when i want them (17 and can't drive lol), which gives me something to do i guess.
Haha the funny thing is I opened this thread thinking "How much you wanna bet it's about shirataki noodles?"
They're pretty fantastic if I do say so myself.
Plus, who wants to eat slimey "tofu worms" for dinner. Bleh.

Lol, I was thinking the same thing! Its one of those things that you either like or hate. Those I hate it seems they can't quite get over the texture.. it ISN'T pasta, therefore it isn't going to have the same texture, but it sure is a nice substitute! I have used them w/ so many things - I'd say they're pretty fantastic as well ![]()
oh goodness- i rinsed and rinsed and rinsed those things but they just tasted like nasty fish.
i'm surprised people actually like those! i got them for the calorie content also and i was so sad that i hated them :(

haha, samee. I saw it in the recent activity & said "yeah, better get in on this tofu shirataki thread" haha.
Anyway, yes, I adore those noodles. yum.
I haven't tried them yet, but they sound wonderful. I'm not so concerned about the texture as the taste. Do they taste like tofu?
What is it EXACTLY made out of? I hope not shrimp because thats not kosher =)
Well I tried them. I was even very optimistic and bought two bags. I hated them blech... its just a texture thing for me. I considered trying them again with spagetti sauce or something but I cant get past my initial reaction to them. So as much as I wish I could of liked them because they are only 40 cal for the whole bag, I just cant.
Hey, everyone, I've had very little tofu so far -- only in hot & sour soup at my fave Chinese place, I think! I have no problem with the taste there, but I've never tried to make ANY tofu on my own at all. So to a tofu novice, would you say that tofu is tofu, and if you like it one way you'll like it other ways? Or is there a vast difference among the various types of tofu?
Thanks everyone!

I love, love, love tofu. But these taste nothing like tofu. I don't think I can get over the texture of it though I almost never have issues with texture. Maybe I just need to prepare them another way.
What do these look like and where in the store do you find them? You have got me REALLY wanting to try them, but I haven't seen them. I have a co-op and a trader Joe's near me...no Asian market, but there is a grocery store with a pretty good ethnic section.
Thanks!

The noodles come in packages that look like this.
You should be able to find them at Trader Joe's. Keep in mind that they need to be refrigerated, so they're probably found in that section.
OP - Just curious - do you go to CIA in Poughkeepsie? I live in Wappingers and have never seen a Mother Earth anywhere other than here, and you mentioning NY, I was just curious -- saw you were at cooking school, assumed CIA..

..........aaaand sooo sorry for those of you who've TRIED the noodles and DO NOT LIKE THEM---------ahhh well :) MORE FOR MEEE!!
are you guys trying to eat them plain or something? they take up the taste of whatever you season them with.
i just put a LOT of seasonings on them. heaps of garlic, italian herb, pepper, blackened seasoning, poultry seasoning, cheese, basil, chinese 5 spice powder, pour some chicken soup base over them and add mushrooms. it's like ramen and it's freaking amazing.
I found them and made them for dinner. Best. Food. Ever.
They did smell a little like death right out of the package, but I actually really like the chewy texture.
