Where do I find the courage to stop overeating?
Asked by anonymous on Aug 05, 2008 in Emotional & Behavioral Issues

I can admit I overeat.  My boyfriend says I should loose a few inches and I'm afraid to wear a bathing suit in public. I have tried Weight Watchers and it went well my first two days, but I stopped because I did not see results, and returned to compulsive eating. How can I push myself to loose weight? I feel too lazy all of the time and I'm only 18 years old. I don't want to be fat!

Answer

Compulsive eating often has an emotional basis, such as abuse, neglect and depression, although it is also caused by dieting itself.  Don’t even try to lose weight until you stop eating compulsively.  The object is to improve your self-esteem and learn to self-nurture without turning to food.  Get 30 minutes of exercise and 8 hours of sleep everyday to rev up your metabolism and shake you sluggishness.  Read an excellent article about breaking free from emotional eating from the Guide to Eating Disorders at About.com.
