First 'anti-stab' knife to go on sale in Britain...seriously??
Because people don't kill people, guns knives kill people. The first “anti-stab” knife is to go on sale in Britain, designed to work as normal in the kitchen but to be ineffective as a weapon.

What is wrong with people??
What interests me most is that it's been tested on - something? As in, "come here honey, let me test this and see if I can stab you or not"

Maybe they stab already dead things.
*shudder*
i doubt that a person planning to shank someone would buy an anti-stab knife in the first place. and even if they did, wouldn't they just grab another knife?
...or use a spork?
ah, sporks.

Ha!
Yeah this knife looks and may sound silly, but you come and live in the UK for a while and watch the news every night 2 yrs ago a 100 people per day were stabbed in the UK that has increased significantly. So as silly as they may seem I am all for them if they reduce the number of youngsters being killed on our streets. Most of the knives used are kitchen knives.
It is so bad that the first ever case of a mother getting 4 yrs in prison for buying the knife her son used to stab a young girl to death (16 times he stabbed her). Was in our courts recently.
Here's just another instance...

I have to agree with Andie here. Knife crime is a big deal here and if it stops just one idiot grabbing a knife to stab someone with it will be worth it.
That said, I don't know who will buy these and the seasoned knife carrier isn't going to be carrying one of these are they? I guess it will only work when it is an impulse, grab the closest thing to hand, type of crime.

The problem is not knives. Its philosophical.
Exactly, take the knives away and they will pick up baseball bats --- actually I guess it would be cricket bats.

Thanks for making me snort at work... :)
so the UK is having the US's gun debate, but knives?
I think its silly. if i wanted to stab someone and my knife didn't work guess what? there's pens and ice picks and letter openers and keys and a zillion other poking devices out there.
Or I'd just get a brick and bludgeon them to death.
A purposely defective knife will not stop me.

no problem, snorts galore.
but seriously, stabbing really bothers me more than shooting someone. ok, i know what some of you are thinking, its not that i would prefer to get shot vs stabbed. even being beaten by a bat or whatever isn't as 'personal' as being stabbed. its a very violent, messy, close contact weapon to use to get rid of or hurt someone. ive never done any of the above, but i can just imagine that hitting someone with a bat & shooting someone (heck you don't have to have contact with them) is a bit more distant than stabbing.
UK has a stabbing problem because they took all the guns away. Just goes to show where there's a will to hurt someone else, there's a way.

Yep. Violent people are violent.

I am aware that knives are not the problem but they are the weapon of choice for the youth in the UK.
We can ban the sale of them to kids
We can put metal detectors in our schools
We can enforce stop and search
We can inprison parents for culpable homicide
etc..
We can not force all the knife carrying kids to seek counseling
We can not force their parents to change the way they parent their kids
We can not change where they live and over all life style
etc
Because to do that the people and families of those people carrying the knives have to want to change

See, when kids want to have (and use) weapons ... that is a social problem, not a knife problem. The knives are just a symptom. Until you address the root problem, taking knives away from everybody (like the UK did with guns) is just going to shift the problem to another area.
From the article:
"Nobody could just grab one out of the kitchen drawer and kill someone.”
Um, I'm pretty sure any knife capable of cutting up some veggies is equally capable of cutting across an exposed throat.
As already mentioned, I'm wondering about the concern over ice picks, skewers, screwdrivers, scissors, and any number of objects that can be used in place of a knife to stab someone.
Suddenly I'm reminded of a scene in some movie (I think "A Perfect Murder") where the character played by Gweneth Paltrow defends herself against an attacker by stabbing him in the jugular with a meat thermometer.
and i just saw the price tag on these knives?!?!?! i really can't see people spending that much, especially if they have money problems just for the basics in life.
As a public safety move it is pretty stupid. Lack of real knives has not decreased prison deaths by shanking. The "knives" just got more creative. It wont help on the streets either.
I say carrying a knife in the first place is stupid.....
Personally I think all the little gits should be gathered up and locked in a room, waxed and plucked, flogged with wet spaghetti, and made to clean scummy toilets with no gloves....
But that's just my opinion.
ok weird topical story i was just told about 10 mins ago, so my boss's brother was supposed to get an operation but the surgeon was involved in a stabbing. he saw this girl being stabbed (one of those stranger stabbings) by some man, scared him away and helped to mend her, brought in the hospital & operated.
and from what i understand from what my boss was telling me, a lot of these stabbings are not used with the average kitchen knife as they are a bit cumbersome to carry around. its usually the discreet knives that you can buy that they use.
so again while the problem isn't silly at all, this solution just doesn't sound like a real solution of any kind. some shops around the uk have agreed to stop selling any knives to people under 18, taking knives off displays so that they are not easily stolen & some other stuff, that sounds like more of a solution than buying some overpriced knife that you will keep in the kitchen.
