The first few days of a diet.....

Quote  |  Reply

All I know is dieting is one of the hardest things out there , not because people can't stop eating but the motivation that is included in dieting. I love eating healthy but sometimes I eat so healthy that my body just crashes and I lose control. I am now engaging into a no carb(starch) diet which means nothing with flour. And believe me it is hard, very hard. I am used to eating rice all day and bread as well. I started  this diet on Monday and my big weigh-in is this Friday. So for the beginners out there, what's the story? How are you guys holding on so far?

what do you mean by "eat so healthy body just crashes and lose control"?

What is "eating healthy" to you?

restricting entire food groups cannot be sustained and therefore is a type of crash diet, and will most likely lead to weight gain once it is over.

I prefer to have a little bit of everything in my diet, within my calorie range, and have lost 10lbs in 7 weeks. by diet, i only mean what I eat, not a set way to eat temporarily. it is a permanent change in how i eat, because as soon as you return to your "regular" way of eating you are going to gain it back. That's how you gained it in the first place.

It makes it less hard. It makes the weight loss permanent. And it is healthier for your body.

Good luck. You will see a lot of this type of response - crash diets aren't really supported here.

I do agree with you because I've experienced the rapid weight gain. But honestly not eating those foods really make me feel a lot better. When I eat anything with bread like pizza, sandwiches or also eating pasta  it makes my body feel so uncomfortable. It's like my body just retains the starch and I feel so bloated. What I am trying to say is I really try to stick to fish, chicken and vegetables since I don't eat red meat.

I mean once I start eating some starchy foods my body starts gaining the weight back for some reason. Hope this answer is a little clearer. Thanks for the response.

It sounds like maybe you have a gluten allergy - you can read about it and see, or see a doctor.

Fruits and vegetables have starches and carbs as well, so you may not be avoiding what you think you are avoiding.

I have found that I don't eat as many bread products as I used to, though I still have my cereal in the morning and an occasional sandwich, rice sometimes, and I stopped craving them, for the most part, after about a week, once I learned to substitute more vegetables or protein.  Eliminating something like that entirely, though, would be really hard.

i am surprised (and sorry) my snarky answer was the only one you got!

I may have jumped to the conclusion you were pulling an atkins.

I guess the main question/concern is - are you replacing the bread and pizza doughs and pasta with whole grain versions or cutting them out all together?

I do think switching from refined starches to whole grains is a healthy choice. I just wouldn't cut out all types of starches. Good luck on friday and keep in mind that it may take a little while for your body to recover from the "new diet" shock and start responding.

Have you calculated your caloric needs and added your daily intake? Even if you don't count cals daily, it may be good just to get your baseline.

:) Good luck!

I agree, unless done for medical concerns, cutting out food groups is a bad, bad idea. It deprives your organism of certain nutrition they provide, which leaves you craving them, resulting in those crashes you describe.

Substitute whole grains for processed ones in your diet. For instance, try oatmeal instead of sugary breakfast cereal or whole rye bread instead of plain. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I also started my diet on Monday. I am really trying to make a lifestyle change not really go on a diet. Diets don't work for me. If I can lose the weight slowly it tends to stay off longer. I took up running about three weeks ago and on Monday I started calorie counters and watching what I eat. I could never take out a whole food group. I wouldn't be able to actually make it a lifestyle choice. I need something that I can keep up with forever. I hope all goes well!
