I signed up to run my first 10k race. I completed a 5k in September.
I love running. I usually run 3 miles a day and have incorporated one day for a longer run. Saturday I did 5.5 in just over 65 minutes. Not the best time ever, but a great time for me! So my goal is to finish the 10k in 75 minutes.
I'm thinking I need to invest in a new pair of shoes. I just bought a new pair at the end of July and they are ready for the garbage can already. I need to buy them soon so I can break them in before the race.
Any tips from other experience runners to help me finish?
Have a strong core.
Eat lots of good carbs the night before your 10K but try to withhold some during that week. This is what I did when I did a half-marathon. I trained for 8 months and that's what I did and I was able to finish in a little over 2 hours. It was like that extra boost of carbs gave me lots of energy.
The closer you get to the end, the more you may start to talk yourself out of finishing or you might tell yourself that you're just going to walk a little. Just keep running, even if at a reduced speed, and make sure you get plenty of fluids along the way.

Start slowly despite what the other runners do. Don't let their egos drive you, because then you'll be able to pass them around mile 4 or 5 when they run out of gas. Resist the urge to pour on the speed in the beginning.
And regular training, of course. But don't overtrain, or you risk injury/loss of motivation.
I've yet to run a 10k but am currently training and run 5k twice a week. Don't run or train the day before apart from maybe stretching, and don't run a few days leading up to it - let your muscles fully recover and you'll find you have a lot more energy.
I did that last week, ran on Tuesday and the rested until Saturday rather than my usual running on the Thursday and I was really surprised and how much my stamina had increased!

- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
