my first post, but I need advice!

Quote  |  Reply

ok this is my first time starting a post, but I don't know who I can ask about my situation and I am getting frustrated! So here it goes:

I am a 5'6'' female, I have no idea how much I weigh as I do not own a scale.  If I had to guess I would say 125 to 130.  I should also say that I am not looking to lose any weight, I just want to maintain.  I usually consume about 1800 to 2000 calories per day.  I do 90 minutes of cardio 6 times per week and additional 30 min strength training 3 times a week.  I also have a fairly active job.  I work retail and am on my feet all day for basically 8 hours straight (with an hour break to sit!)  According to my burn meter I burn about 1500 cals at a sedentary setting.  When I log my activities for the day I average between a 300 and 500 calorie deficit.

I was maintaining for quite a few months with no significant body changes, but over the last few weeks I have noticed my pants are much tighter and my stomach seems "pudgier."  Like I said I don't own a scale, but I feel as if I have gained weight because all my clothes fit tighter. What am I doing wrong?

it could be that you are gaining muscle!

^ Gaining muscle bulk would require intaking more calories than are getting burned and it's hard for us females to do.  OP- The only things I can think of is a. you're getting less exercise b. you're eating more than you think c. it's TTOTM (speaking as someone who literally gains 6lbs overnight because of it) d.  your metabolism is slowing down so you might need to increase the intensity of your workouts.

You need to get your weight to even begin to use the tools here.  There are plenty of places that have a scale - your doctor's office, gyms, schools, some drug stores, even at the mall.  Once you have your weight and height, you'll be able to use the CC tools to determine what your caloric needs are.

Have you added any new foods, changed anything? Could it be that it is just close to your time of the month. Most girls gain some water weight/bloat then. It could be you are building some muscle which can add weight.

Have you started any new medications/vitamins?

Thanks for all your feedback!

opusanna- Increasing my intensity is a good idea.  I have been doing the same cardio routine and should probably start challenging myself more.

clairlaine- I have a fear of knowing how much I actually weigh.  I am recovering from an eating disorder and obsessing about my weight was a huge trigger.  Whenever I reached my "ideal" weight I wasn't happy and wanted it to be lower.  I finally decided to toss out my scale to I wouldn't have the temptation to step on it and trigger unhealthy behaviors ie restricting and purging.  I feel I can still use the calorie counting tools knowing a general weight range because it is normal for our bodies to fluctuate in weight anyway.  I just feel my body is actually changing proportions uncharacteristically  within a few weeks time and I don't understand why.

littleshellys- I am hoping it is bloating and/or water weight.  I am not peeing very often so maybe my body is retaining water??  No I am not on any new meds or vitamins (although I should be taking vitamins!)

any other ideas????

Our bodies fluctuate so much sometimes it is hard to figure out why we gain. I would not worry too much about it. Drink plenty of water. That will help with the fluid retention. If you are recovering from an eating disorder don't focus on the scale. Focus on eating enough and getting healthy. A clean/balanced diet with plenty of calories.
