first time DRUNK *eek!

Quote  |  Reply
ha ha--okay
so embarrassingly---I am nearly 20 (in FEB.) and New Years night was my FIRST real night D-R-U-N-K
We celebrated on the beach with a bon-fire...I had a lot of REALLY cheap champaign a RUM and COKE...and apparently....a little tequila from someones glass.---
I honestly am NOT a huge drinker----and ended up throwing up several times. Fortunately, I had several wonderful friends who were kind enough to get me home safely, get me into pajamas,....had me eat a rice cake, have some water,..and take advil.
UN-FORTUNATELY--------the next day was H-E-L-L
  yup---experienced my first HANG-OVER---
had to work that day----and working in a Pastry Kitchen where there is CONSTANTLY a "sweet smell" made me want to hurl. I seriously felt TERRIBLE all day,..and can say that ONLY THIS MORNING did I finally feel better.
MY QUESTION:   I am a small person recovering from anorexia and weigh 88 lb.
&nb sp;              IS THIS why I got so so sick from drinking? Is THIS why my hangover
&nb sp;            was so horrible and lasted SO long
and also:----which alcohols give you the worst hangover cause THIS ONE
&nb sp;                SUCKED and it was mainly from champaign I guess.
SORRY for all of the "newbie drinker" questions---ha ha---any advice is appreciated :) thanks ya'll :)

Don't drink underage. I'm sorry but that was just about one of the stupidest things you could ever do.

Your super hang over is probably not because you are suffering/recovering from an ED.  The less tolerance your body has for alcohol, the worse the hang over is probably going to be.  It could also be that your body doesn't produce many enzymes to digest sugars (such as those found in alcohol) because you don't eat them very often.

Drink plenty of fluids (hang over is basically dehydration), take some Ibuprofen, and eat bland foods like toast or crackers, maybe some chicken noodle soup when you feel up to it!

Ignore Zebulan's comment.  I think getting to 19 and never having been drunk before is awesome.  I'm far naughtier than you and was drinking at age 16...

Also remember that 16 is the legal age to drink in most european countries, and in most other western countries the legal age is 18. The drinking age of 20/21 in the usa seems very strange to those of us who have been allowed to drink legally for years.

Drink responsibly!  Hangovers are NOT fun. :)

i totaly forgot the drinking age in the US is 21 so the underage comment confused me at first.

however, yeah hangovers are so bad. i aways have a banana and a big glass of water and then bring some water with me to bed.

but it may have happened to you because you probably don't have a very high tolerance at all, and also lighter people tend to get drunk faster. and recovering from an ED might mean your body isn't used to beign inundated with sugar.

Sorry to disagree with you here, but the effect is the same no matter how old you are.

To the OP: At 88lbs, you have a MUCH higher risk of alcohol poisoning than someone of normal weight. I'd avoid drinking until you get to a healthier weight, unless you know you can exercise some serious self control.

Good for you - I hope you had fun and that the hangover was a learning experience.  I think that the US drinking age is absurdly high, and actually encourages binge drinking and teen drinking because of the "forbidden" factor.  the late teens is a good time to be learning your limits and how to drink sensibly.  I grew up across the border from Mexico, so everyone at my school spend every weekend partying in Juarez from age 16 to age 21.  By the time we were 21, alcohol was old hat - LOL.

That's not to say that I think massive alcohol consumption is a good thing.  I just think that the reality is that the vast majority of teens drink and it's unrealistic to say "DON'T DO IT".  Do it, but be sensible about it.   Girls, especially thin ones, will naturally have a low tolerance for alcohol.  Once you start feeling yourself get a mild "buzz", you should restrict your consumption to like 1 beer or 1 small mixed drink every 90 min. max or you will be dealing with hangovers again.  Don't drink and drive.

I remember being young and getting super-drunk and throwing up - etc.  Not fun.  Take care and be safe.

Yes, and be aware that every year several people DIE of alcohol poisoning, something that has never happened with the inexplicably illegal weed marijuana...

under age? shes nearly 20! Ive been drinking since i was about 15, in fact my 6 niece had a glass of champage with her christmas dinner. Drinking a little around your parents surely makes you grow up realising that its a treat on occassion rather than going and getting blind drunk!

Anyway.. welcome to your first hangover, good reason not to get drunk again. yes your low weight probably made it all much worse as you didnt have the fat to soak it up so its hit your blood much harder. If you over do it again have a large glass of water and 2 paracetamol before going to bed, in fact put them by your bed before you go out. Promise it helps so much.

Supoosedly the darker the alcholo the more prone it is to giving you hangovers as its heavier in chemicals, but whether thats true i dont know. I find i get drunker on champagne than anything else. Just try to drink a little slower and alternate alcohol with soft drinks. Go for long fruity cocktails as the sugary jucie seems balance things a little for me. Also when you are starting to feel a little drunk stop drinking youve got more alcholo in your tummy whihc will be hitting your blood stream so you are going to get drunker even after you stop.

Basically enjoy your drink but do it sensibly and make sure you drink enough liquid! Also remember it takes the avaergae person 1 hour to metabolise 1 unit of alcohol so if youve been drinking all night dont drive in the morning

The only thing that matters is the alcohol percentage, rate of consumption, and body weight. Ethanol is clear; the darkness of the drink is irrelevant.
Zebulan, not everyone on this site is American. In Britain and many other countries it is 18, which is far more sensible than 21 in a country where you can drive a tonne killing machine at 16....
rastnim - got to agree i think its brilliant that in some random states a kid can marry at like 15, have a baby and drive a hummer, but not be allowed a glass of champagne till they are 21! Funny thing is when friends visited me from US they always headed straight for a pub and got wasted.

At 15 my mum used to allow me to drink a little and i knew that if i got drunk id be in soo much trouble that i never did. She even dropped me off at the local night clubs and picked me up at midnight, how embrassing. By the time i went to university at 18, drinking was nothing new or exciting so i was sensible with it.

along with everyone else, im going to tell you first of all that what zebulan said should be disregarded. it was insensitive and ignorant.

anyway, im also recovering from an eating disorder, i weigh 116 lbs and i get very drunk off 2 beers. like someone else said, it has to  with tolerance. i know some very small girls who could outdrink any guy. actually my friend who is anorexic and very thin drinks alot and hardly gets hangovers! its all about tolerance. but whoever said to wait til you weigh more had a good suggestion. alcohol poisoning is not fun, and very very very scary.

to avoid hangovers, drink lots of water when you're drinking. this is what i used to to do (i dont drink anymore), and i still got drunk so no worries, it doesnt keep you sober, just hydrated!

Growing up during a time when 18 year olds could drink 3.2 beer, and living in europe for a time when I was 16 going on 17, I also used to think the 21 age in the US was silly.

But now there is all this new research showing that the teen brain, from ages 13 and possibly up until age 23, is undergoing amazing growth and changes. And that even as much as a drop of alcohol could impede this brain development. I guess I coulda been a lot smarter if I'd abstained... sigh! And I tell my own teens to read the book The Primal Teen (which discusses all this new research) and to at least hold off until 21, if they want to achieve their full potential, brain-wise.

I also tell them that BODY WEIGHT plays a very big role in one's ability to handle alcohol. I demonstrate to them that one shot glass of liquor is equivalent to 1 glass of wine and 1 bottle of beer. This is important to keep in mind!! While you *may* be able to handle 4 beers in an hour, 4 shots in an hour could possibly cause alcohol poisoning. I explain that my girlfriend who's 6 feet tall and wieghs 160-170 can drink a bottle of wine in an hour, and just get a bit drunk and silly. Whereas, I weigh 107,  if I drank a full bottle of wine in an hour, it would very likely kill me.... if it was on an empty tummy. Definetly a bottle of liquor would kill me, empty tummy or no!

So please be careful, lileberly.... if you weigh so little, it wouldn't take much to kill you. You will learn your own limit, but while you're figuring it out, just remember that you really can die from too much alcohol.... and that "too much" for you is going to be a lot less than what your heavier friends can handle.

The hangover was a clue: it wasn't what you drank. It's that you drank too much.

Next time, just plan it out better. Eat something substantial before you drink - never drink on an empty tummy!!! Drink slowly, no more than 1 drink per hour. Drink a glass of water between each drink. Don't let people top off your glass - then it becomes too easy to lose count of how much you've had.

I'm going to guess that two drinks is probably your limit at this stage of the game, maybe not even that. I weigh 20 lbs heavier, and anymore than two drinks, I get a hangover. Unless they are spaced out over many many hours and I'm also eating a meal with it.

i agree with the other posters zebulancherry. :P

but yeah, low body weight gives you a worse hangover. last year i passed out at 11 (before the ball dropped, lol) and didn't wake up until 12 hours later and i was STILL completely drunk. crazyyy

Be careful I had a friend try to drink him self into a coma before it was not pretty. For now eat food, drink water, avoided harsh light, and loud noises. Do a search for a blood alcohol content calculator it might be enlightening. I had a tiny roommate in college and she got trashed on half a wine cooler.
Next time you drink be sure to eat something first (don't know if you did or not) I've heard bananas are really good to prevent hangovers. Try to have a glass of water between each drink or at least after each 2 drinks. This is the only way I can find that keeps me hang-over-less. The fact that you are low body weight is definitely a factor as well.

I was drinking with my sister a few months back, and didn't account for the fact that I'd lost 70 lbs since the last time I really drank, and drank the same amount thinking it'd have the smae affect. Uh uh. no way. It was really scary actually, I was almost ready to  call a cab so I could go to the hospital.
I honestly don't think that you recovering from an ED has too much to do with your hang over, although the ability to handle what you drank due to your weight may...

I rarely drink, and I am more than double your weight (sniff sniff sad but true).  I was a very small tolerance to what I drink, I had 2 drinks on New Years eve, and the next morning was suffering...

So who knows...
Well, I would say that not drinking very often/ever would give you a very low tolerance for alcohol, and that certainly could be why you had such a nasty hangover - IMO.

If you're going to drink - which is a personal choice - here are some tip to minimize the hangover:

  • Take a good multi vitamin AND a good B suppliment before you go out AND when you get up in the morning, and be sure to take them with PLENTY of water!
  • drink one glass of water for every alcoholic beverage you consume. This will help keep you hydrated, and you won't get as drunk as quickly - hopefully avoiding getting sick!
  • Get a bottle of Powerade or some other sports drink - I like to dilute mine 1/2 & 1/2 with water because they are a little sweet to me - and drink some before bed, and have the rest in the morning. The electrolytes along with the water will help to rehydrate you.
  • Have a slice of burnt toast if you're nauseous - the burnt part is carbon {charcoal} which helps to absorb the toxins {alcohol} and will help keep the nausea at bay.
I have had more than a few years practice *blush* and these tips have really helped me out when I was feeling like a sack of jello!

...of course, not drinking to excess works well, too ~ but, as Ben Franklin {I think, and I'm paraphrasing} said..."Everything in Moderation...Including Moderation..."

and he DEFINITELY said..."Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy"

Hope this helps, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

she may not be underage where i'm from legal age is 19

ALL being drunk/hangover experiences suck bigtime... I can't say that I ever found any upside to drinking to excess (it has way too many calories, it makes you do stupid things, and then it makes you puke, and to finish up with you feel like death warmed up for at least a day...) Personally, after a couple of bad experiences, I chose never to go there again! The most I ever have is one glass of white wine (usually only half a glass) with a meal because any more than that goes straight to my head - and I weigh more than twice what you do!
