First Time w/ Vicodin...
Well I went to the doctors today because of my back. 3 hours, 2 consulations, 4 x-rays and one hug later I walked out of the office w/ some discouraging news and a big bag of pain killers, of which included vicodin.
Never had the drug before, took one pill about an hour ago and I am definatly feeling it now. I don't like to use narcotics, I have had morphine once before, it was nice, but I have an addictive personality. Never been addicted to drugs, but don't want to start either. Is vicodin addictive if I just take my prescribed doese?
Also, the drug is supposed to relieve ppain, is it normal to for it to relieve the pain and give you this sort of high that I am having??
i believe it is totally normal for it to give you a bit of a high, and relieve the pain. my dentist prescribed it for me after a root canal. 12 vicodin for something that barely hurt afterwards, ha! i was a little surprised but i filled the script anyway, cause hey, why not?
i took one and it make me feel really loopy, then it made me sick to my stomach, so i haven't taken one since. i have an addictive personality too, and they are supposed to be pretty addictive, but i think as long as you stick to the dosage you should be fine.
Sorry to hear about your back. That sucks. I have been on vicodin a few times. The first time was several years ago when I had my wisdom teeth out and developed a dry socket. I never had a high feeling, and it seemed to help with the pain. However, once my prescription was up, I was practically begging the dentist for a refill, despite experiencing little to no pain. I had this panic feeling that I would be in great pain if I didn't get more. Luckily my dentist didn't give me anymore and I was fine.
Fastforward several years and I was prescribed it again for my broken arm. I needed it because it was the worst pain I've ever had. I took the maximum dose as frequently as possible and it didn't really seem to help all that much. I had terrible stomach aches and crazy scary nightmares on it. I ended up getting prescribed Percocet, which is stronger on the pain and easier on the stomach. With the Percocet, I experienced that high feeling you mentioned. I loved it and it helped with the pain. However, I found myself taking the pills even when I didn't need them. Basically I had to just completely quit taking them, but my pain had already decreased.
I guess the point is, everyone has different experiences, but it is quite easy to get addicted. I would make sure you are being honest with yourself about your pain level and need for the medication. Also, you should discuss your concerns with your doctor. There may be a less addictive alternative.
You really just need to wiegh the risks versus the benefits and ask yourself how bad you need this medication. When my boyfriend's back acts up, he is out for days if he doesn't take his pills. Crawling to the bathroom on his hands and knees and all. You should be fine on the minimum dose for a limited amount of time under doctor supervision, but definitely keep an eye on it.
Vicodin, Lortabs, Oxycotin, Codine, Percocet, etc are all addictive, but as with all drugs, it depends on the person as to how quickly or even if they become addicted. If you have any concerns, please speak with your doctor as they may be able to help.
Brett Favre was once addicted to Vicodin... if used as directed (and not for extended periods), it should be fine to take it. Just be careful and make sure to follow your doc's instructions.
Take them with food or you will feel sick and if you take them as directed for short periods of time you cannot become addicted. Even if you feel you may be addicted, you can be easily weened off.
on the med description paper they gave me it said when taken with food, could cause nausea... thanks for all the input thus far.

Odd, cause mine said the opposite. :0
Edit: This is what mine says: Take Vicodin by mouth with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, take with food to reduce stomach irritation.
I can barely type right now, but maybe its different based on dosage size. I just took one and had a light dinner and I am going to throw up... that acidiy fluid is already in my mouht... do not take with food
If you're not used to taking narcotics, take the smallest dose possible. It will still work at taking away the pain and shouldn't make you as sick.
I have actually cut the pills in half and it's usually enough to take the edge off any pain I have. If it's not enough you can still take the other half, but start with the lowest dose and work your way up to what you can tolerate.
