Hello all,
After going to my doctor for a check-up and mentioning some fatigue I have been having she became concerned about the amount of fish I was eating, and she did some blood work for mercury poisoning. I wont get the results til next week but was curious if anyone else had any personal experience with this? I feel like she may be over-reacting but to be honest I do eat fish 7-10 times a week. I don't know what I am going to do for food now...she told me to cut back to 3-4 times a week tops. Seems extreme! Anybody else heard of this?
I feel so Jeremy Piven.
Damn. 7-10. Not good. 3-4 even sounds high to me. I was told 1-2 especially if it's a big fish like salmon, tuna, or sword. While you're waiting for the results check the web. Seriously, look around.
Seriously.
Good luck. You'll get some good food replacement suggestions here.

Generally, fish is very good for you if it weren't for the mercury in it.
I recall reading something... I think this is it.
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/ar chive/2003/06/28/mercury-fish-part-seven.aspx
It lists these as the lowest in mercury
Good luck!
Oh Pizza that makes me feel better since I eat mostly Haddock, Shrimp and Salmon. Regardless I am going to cut back. I had heard of mercury poisoning but didnt really think I was eating that much of it.
I hate meat so it was an easy substitute. Looks like chicken is my new friend.
Good list. You can push the envelpe a little with these. Smaller fish, good fish.
Even in the lowest mercury fish 2-6 oz portions a week according to this site.
Damn, I have been eating one 3 oz portion of sole every day for breakfast.
Whoa, spoiled_candy that site is a pregnancy site... the recommendation is for women who are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, and for children. It's a conservative number for that reason.
I think for the average adult who is not TTC or PG more is okay.
I know it is a pregnancy site, but sometimes it is better to error on the side of caution.
I eat a lot of fish, at least 3-4 oz a day. Mostly sole and Atlantic salmon.
yes the type of fish greatly contributes to the mercury content. A sad but true statement...
So I eat fish about 4 to 5 times a week... in 11 ounce portions (specifically salmon... but sometimes eel or sashimi tuna/hamachi collars (yellow fin tuna))... I don't typically have any fatigue problems that I associate with my fish consumption... If anything I feel very healthy and happy eating the amount of fish I do and will continue to do so until... well, until there is none left in this world! AH HA HA HA! I love fish so much I could never give it up! Even if I were dignosed with mercury poisoning.. I still wouldn't give it up.
Do you eat a lot of high fructose corn syrup, because new studies are finding that there is mercury in that fake sugar too!
Other ingredients in foods can make you tired... Have you increased your fake sugar consumption (aspartame, splenda, etc?) These can cause fatigue for sure.

what you need to know from the EPA
Consumer Guide to Mercury in Fish from the NRDC, with a handy mercury calculator.
Depends where you come from. In New Zealand we don't have a problem with the mercury levels in our fish, so you can eat as much as you like there.
No I eat clean and I have never touched artificial sweeteners. My guess honestly is the fatigue is seasonal allergies, but I will know next week either way. That doesn't change the fact about the fish though, and I think its probably best for me to cut back.
