I'm a little concerned I may be eating too much fish and get mercury poisoning. I eat it around 15 times a week - is this too much? If it is what would be a good replacement - something that is good for you and quite high in protein. Thanks :)
Chicken, turkey, lean beef, bison (buffalo meat), ostrich, eggs, beans of all sorts, tofu, nuts, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, even whole grains have some protein.
Just search for "protein" under the Food Browser and you will get lots of ideas of proteins to add variety to your diet.
Sorry I should have been more detailed in my post. I already have chicken around 10 times a week, pork a couple of times as well as the other things you mentioned apart from yogurt and cheese (rarely). Do you think I'm having too much fish?

Thanks for the link but according to that I have ten times the recommended safe level of mercury ![]()
No offense Claire, but looking at that site you recommended leaves me with the feeling that have a not-so-hidden agenda in encouraging people to eat less fish. They are the "Sea Turtle Restoration Project," and they want to see commercial fishing curtailed. You can find this out by looking at the website.

Not that there is anything wrong with wanting to save sea turtles, but scare-mongering about mercury isn't the way to do it, imo.
The OP should look at:http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/Product-Sp ecificInformation/Seafood/FoodbornePathogensC ontaminants/Methylmercury/ucm115662.htm
to get the FDA's official advisory.
If you are eating fish 15 times a week and pork, chicken or some other meat 10 you are eating quite a bit of meat and fish. Why so much. Are you eating other foods as well. Is your diet balanced?

I think my diet is quite well balanced; I eat a lot of wholewheat paste; rice & bread as well as 6-8 different types of fruit & veg a day. I'm tall and have a high metabolism so usually have between 3500-4000 cals a day depending on how much exercise I do.
EDIT: thanks for the link sunflower.
Known Mecury Detoxifiers (foods):
- Cilantro
- Garlic, Onions & Leeks
- Cruciferous vegetables
- Seaweed/Spirulina/Chlorella **
- Flaxseeds
- Antibiotic FREE chicken, beef, pork, etc(protein helps fight heavy metals in the body because of the amino acids - whey protein helps too)
- Pro Biotics
- Vitamin C (Kiwis, Oranges, Spinach, Broccoli, Bell Peppers, etc)
- Filtered Water
- Magnesium, Zinc & Selenium
- Artichokes & Milk Thistle
*While these will help detox heavy metals, cutting back on the high mercury fish is definitely your first line of action! It's a shame fish has to have lots of mercury because it's SO GOOD!!! I haven't eaten swordfish in... man I don't even know how long!
