Fish oil for omega 3s?
Ok, I keep reading about these fabulous fats that are soooo good for you and how the only place to get the best ones is in fish. I LOATHE fish. (I read just the other day that the ones in plants aren't the same and we may not be able to process the ones in plants the same way as the ones in fish)
So what about fish oil? I think they make caplets of it, don't they? any thoughts?

We take Fish omega-3 every day (180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA x4) but there is a fish aftertaste. Sams Club (and I'm sure other outlets) have an enteric coated capsule with a vanilla flavoring that reduse the after taste.
I'm going to have to give that a shot. Maybe I'll eat it before a meal so I can kill the fishy taste. Do you think that will work?
It helps some. But don't stick your nose in the bottle...It smells like two tons of salmon. (God I love salmon!)
Now why don't you like salmon?

I don't know. I may have never had it, but the idea of eating fish just makes me cringe. I tried to get myself over it last week but that was disasterous.
Wait, I've had smoked salmon. It was good, but I imagine it's very salty and expensive. Nor do I think I would want to eat it often.
As for things that reek to high heaven, ever taken valarien root? DEAR LORD, it stinks. (it's a muscle relaxant that can help you sleep. My folks swear by it, but I don't bother)

Salmon is the fish that got my midwestern, afraid of any thing that might have ever been in the sea, wife eating fish. Someday give salmon a try but until then the fish oil.
How do you cook it? I'm willing to give it a shot but I'd like some advice so I don't screw up again.
I couldnt take the fish pills....it smelled so bad and i burped fish taste all day. i talked to the pharmacist and they recommended that i take flax seed oil instead. I have to say it is much better tasting.
Buy it skinless to start with!
I buy the packed fillets (at Sams).
My wife's I sprinkle both sides with salt, pepper, chipotle and then cover it with dry dill and spray with pam.
Mine what ever I feel like that day, Sate seasoning and black soy sauce or sweet chili sauce or just salt and p epper then
sprayed with pam.
Then I the winter I broil it in the summer I grill on my enamel grill on charcol grill. To start with you will like it better cooked all the way through the salmon will brown slightly and even get a little crunch.

If you are looking for a way to get the fish oils or Omega-3 without the fishy smell or flavor. Try Flax Seed Oil capsules it's loaded in Omega 3, 6 and 9. And another thought is to try looking at local herbal stores a better quality product may help you get rid of that fishiness.
Not to say you aren't getting a good product I just find quality a little better at the herbal stores/ or healthfood stores.

There are many fish oil products out there. Some also add lemon or rosemary to help with the fishy smell. It is a very healthy fat. I find when I get my omegas (I'm a salmon/tuna junkie), it does wonders for my mood.
They can also help with skin, hair, blood pressure, and other health issues. Most good quality fish oils have large enough doses that you only need one or two softgels per day. There are also enteric coated ones (I believe Enzamatic Therapy makes a great one), that have no taste at all, and have the most bioavailability of the supplemental fish oils.
The best sources are cold water North Atlantic fish, cod, mackerel, Tuna, salmon etc..
But eating real fish is still the best option. If find buying fresh fish and baking it the same day gives the best product. Frozen or canned is also good. A truly fresh fish shouldn't have any fishy odor to it.
Flax seed is also a good source of omega 3, but it isn't as high as fish nor is it quite as bioavailable.

Some people (like me) never know they have a fish allergy until they take fish oil supplements and break out in hives. On their eyelids. Fun!
Flax oil also has a peculiar aftertaste, but it's easier to deal with than burping FISH JUICE at 8 in the morning. If you do take the fish oil supplement, I strongly suggest taking it later in the day or risk losing your breakfast!

There is a FDA (if you trust them...which I think you should) approved supplement of Omega 3 fish oils called Omacor (for high triglycerides). This works. If you can't somach 3 servings of fish per week...and you have a cholesterol/triglyceride disorder or family history of early (ie. 40 to 50 year old) cardiovascular disease, you should request this supplement. Don't think you doctor has signed on to this new "drug" since it is new marketed and many physicians are not aggressive in treating high triglycerides in isolation of high cholesterol. However, there is abundant information that high triglycerides and low HDL (protective cholesterol) is directly linked to development of cardiovascular heart disease. Ask you doctor.
But why eat re-manufactured omega-3 instead of real omega-3?
The only advantage to this drug is if one can't stomach the real thing...such as fish. I don't like "fishy" smelling fish, but sushi is the bomb! The only bad thing about sushi is the white rice. So many times, I order the sashimi.
I take a fish oil supplement that has lemon in it and there is nothing fishy about it at all. It also has primrose oil in it which is supposed to be good for women.
I don't take flax oil but I do eat 2tbs of milled flax seed almost daily, is that good? Can you get too many omega's?
