Fish Oil Post Workout
I think I may have been doing a no-no with my fish oil. I read today that you shouldn't take fish oil post workout. Fish oil is a anti-inflamatory, which would be counter productive to muscle growth????? Is that true?
I take my fish oil throughout the day, but one dose is always post workout. Is there a noticeable hinderance to doing it this way? I'm changing my doseage regardless, but I'm curious if I was sabatoging muscle growth.
6 hours later and you're complaining no one's replied? It's a forum, not an IRC Chat Room. Relax. I don't know the answer to your question, so I'm not replying to it. I've been flat on my back with pneumonia for the last three weeks, so I haven't been replying to much of anything or in front of the computer all that much.
Give it a few days then you can come back and flame the mods for not replying to you if no one answers your question. I will grant you that It HAS been a bit deserted in here of late, but no one's OBLIGATED to run this forum. If no one pings you back here, you might try posting on bodybuilding.com or something.
Snapshot - sorry, I don't have info for you either...
Pete - sorry to hear you've been so sick! Hope you take the rest you need to heal up. My Assistant Principal has been out with the same thing. The woman is a warrior, but this illness really knocked her out. Take care!

Dude, sorry you're sick. Hope you feel better.
I guess I'm used to other forums on CC where people usually respond within a few minutes - or maybe an hour at the latest.
kmk and snapshot thanks for the good wishes. Sorry I sounded snotty last night. Between coughing my lungs out, not working out, and wishing this stuff would GO AWAY I've been a bit...terse on all fronts.
Snapshot--if you DO get an answer, anywhere, lemme know. I take flaxseed and fish oil throughout the day too. If it turns out that doing so post-workout has a negative effect, that's info I'd like to have as well if you don't mind sharing.
And I doubt I'll be back in the gym this week. This will make my third week not working out. Hopefully next Monday will signal the restart. If the fish oil question gets answered by then, I'll have something new for zero day, which will make me happy.
...Not as happy as throwing this inhaler in the garbage and being done with the antibiotics, but happy. There's something inherently NERDY about sucking an inhaler four times a day. One time, at band camp...
no worries... I opened myself up with my smarta** comments. We're cool.
I haven't found anything definitive on this. My original question actually came from a bb.com forum and I was trying to verify it. Though I did see a study posted online that NSAIDs do inhibit protein metabolism after exercise. But, that study was done with ibuprofen and acetaminophen, not fish oil. One could say that cause fish oil has similar anti-inflammatory properties that it would inhibit protein synthesis after lifting - but that might be stretching it.
I can't find a study using fish oil... but I'll keep looking.
Not sure if this helps, but I don't think Berardi would be recommending fish-oil capsules at dinner after a work-out if they hurt recovery.
About half way down in the article is the "sample menu" and he has the girl taking a fish oil capsule at dinner (8 PM) with a workout ending at 6 PM.
"6pm Post-workout – Liquid drink containing 20-25g fast digesting protein (like whey) and 40-50g of simple carbohydrate (like Gatorade)
8pm Dinner – 4oz burger, large salad, medium sized baked potato, fish oil capsules"
This article is from 2003, so not sure if anything new has been found since then and the google hits were too many for me to sort through in a short amount of time. I have a feeling though that this is too small to worry about.
Why should I gain weight if I'm not significantly underweight?
Actually, at 5 feet 5.25 inches and 96 - 98 pounds, your weight is below the healthy weight range for your height and age. There are... Read more
