Five Days Overdue! :(

Quote  |  Reply

I was due last Wednesday with my first.  Now it's Monday!  Still no baby.  I have stopped answering the phone and email because I am sick of telling people that nothing's happened.  I haven't even really had much in the way of contractions or any signs that this is going to happen soon.  I've tried all the usual things to get 'er going: sex, spicy foods, walking....  My husband is home with me so I keep trying to remind myself that I should savor this time we have to just sit around together, read, clean, walk the dogs.  How much time are we going to have to do this stuff in the near future?

Anyway, just thought maybe I could find someone here to commisserate with.  I keep hearing horror stories, people who went two weeks over, or more!  Please no!

I'll have any ultrasound on Friday if I haven't delivered to make sure the fluids are still good and my placenta is doing it's thing...

Anyone have any advice on stuff to do while we wait (on the cheap) or as yet unheard of miracle magic ways to go into labor?

Whatever you do, DON'T try to induce with castor oil, that is AWFUL!  It will just make you sick and dehydrated.  It may work but it won't be a pleasant experience.

I was induced with both of mine.  But I liked the recommendation I got from my midwife of Evening Primrose oil capsules.  This doesn't force labor, just encourages the natural process when your body is ready.

This is a great article and I hope you start or get your OB to induce soon!

I'm sorry, I can't tell you anything that might help other than just taking long walks, if that is possible.  I was ten days overdue with my second, in the middle of August, and I remember how miserable I was!  I kept having Braxton-Hicks in the middle of the night and waking to time them, only to have them fade away.  Ugh!  Don't worry, the baby will come on its own time.  Most medical professionals won't let you go more than two weeks over out of concern for the baby.

Predicting a due date is not an exact science - the doctor doesn't know when you conceived...relax.  Doc won't let  you go too far over.  He may induce if he feels he should. I went two weeks.  My daughter was induced for both.  All turned out well.    Good luck.

I was 5 days overdue with my first. My OB actually had me schedule my induction months in advance. She didn't want me going more than 7 days past my due date.

I know it sucks being 41 weeks pregnant and I'm sure you're ready to meet the baby but s/he will come when ready. :)

I've heard that nipple stimulation can induce labor. If you have a breastpump, you could always try that (or do it the fun, old fashioned way!). Definitely DO NOT do the castor oil thing unless recommended by your doctor. It can have some major side effects. I've also heard that eating large meals can induce labor (I went into labor the day after Thanksgiving. 'Nuff said.).

Your due date is calculated by counting 40 weeks from your last period. Odds are you didn't conceive at that point so unless you know for sure the day you conceived, the doctors could be off by a week or more.

I hope your labor begins soon and you can avoid an induction!

Hang in there!  I have heard that having a foot massage sometimes works.  Have your hubby give you a pedi and massage your feet.  Even if it does not work, at least your feet will look great for the delivery!!!

Good luck!

Aww, I know JUST HOW YOU FEEL!!

I was 10 days overdue and had to be induced!!!  I wasn't even 1/2 cm dilated on my 10th day so my doc said...OK-   meet me at the hospital at 5PM and will start you on Pitocin.  And she STILL didn't want to come out LOL.  My body wanted to keep her in there I guess.

Let nature take it's course or the doc will help move things along.  HUGS!!

I could change this thread title to "a week overdue!"

I know, I know... it happens to lots of expectant mothers, but it's just so frustrating!!  I'm doing what I can do, sex, spicy foods (not that I think that works, but I do like spicy foods!), not interested in the castor oil, foot rubs, etc... nothing.  Some mild cramping in my back, slight tings of pain & braxton-hicks...  Sheesh!

Going in for an ultrasound tomorrow to make sure baby is still happy, amniotic fluids are still good and placenta is still healthy.  Good lord, if I have to wait another week...  I really don't know what I'm going to do!

Thanks for all the well wishes!

go see a movie....you can take babies to most other places. Go with your hubby and enjoy a movie. I think we have seen two movies at the theater since my daughter was born 3 years ago!

I agree with meghansmommy!

We've seen less than five movies in a theatre since our daughter was born 4.5 years ago. Do it now while you can! It's nice and cold and you don't have to be on your poor, swollen feet!

I could tell you horror stories about how far past her due date my sister went (4 times), or how far overdue I went with my first...  but now days doctor's don't usually let you get past 2 weeks.   (HInt:  my sister and I were both far past that).

With my second child I went out and had a hyoooge breakfast and then spent all day window shopping at the mall.  Came home and within an hour started having regular contractions.  He was born early the next morning. Coincidence?  Probably.

Try to enjoy the time you have... I agree with the ideas about going to the movies.  Matinees are pretty cheap and it can distract you for a couple of hours.  Or just go rent a ton of movies you've been meaning to watch...
