flash drive question

Quote  |  Reply
How many ppl use them or like them?  I'd never heard of them till last month on a new job.  Now I have an offer for a free one.  Maybe I'm a little suspicious of having a computer glitch if I start using them.  And, why would I carry one around with me.  It's not like my friends would want me to use one on their computer.

Just curious about others opinions.  thanks.

I've been using them for abt a year or so. I have a 4 GB flash drive on which I back up my work -- writing . I back up regularly and keep the flash drive on my key chain so if anything happens to my laptop and/or house I have a back up of everything.

I also use it to move music/photos between me and my friends. ALL allow me to plug it into their computers. Plus i am known to be a security freak which has antivirus and everything else on her laptop so I cannot give them bugs lol

I also use my MP4 player as storing device especially for music and photos.

Yeah, I'm a geeky writer lol :))

I use mine frequently - it's the easiest way for me to transfer files which are too large to be e-mailed. If it's new, it's perfectly safe. Essentially, it's the same as a CD or floppy disk; just a different, more convenient method. Since it's free, I'd recommend trying it. :)

My hubby has them all over the place.  He uses them to transfer stuff from his mac to the home pc and back again, back ups transfer from other peoples computers to his and pretty much no longer uses discs at all.

ok thanks, now I'm catching on.  So, I can download all my photos and when I visit my kids I can plug it into their computer and they can see my photos.  Great.

cricket:  Don't you worry about the one on your keychain coming off and being lost?  (since it just plugs in)  My keys get tossed around, sometimes catch on my purse and I give them a yank, etc.

Songs that I buy on itunes or downloaded from my CD's I can download onto a flashdrive, right.  I really haven't backed them up as once when I bought CD's to do that it only took 17 at a time and was too tedious to download my 350 songs, so I only copied a few.

oh, my favorite site on my computer is my word document where I've copied recipes over the yrs.  I don't have any back up for those.  Maybe I need several flashdrives or a really big one.

for back-up, i'd recommend a portable hard drive.  i have a 500 GB Western Digital passport.  it's big enough to store everything on both my computers, including software and set-up.  basically, it's like carrying my whole system in my pocket.

flash drives are really just for portability.  if they're giving you one at work, it's probably because they want you to work at home evenings and weekends ;)

practically everyone i know uses flash drives.  but practically everyone i know is a grad student or a teacher.  we use them to share documents, carry powerpoint presentations, etc.  if you have it with you, you'll find lots of uses for it, but back-up probably isn't one of them.

it has one of those things to keep it on the key chain and no, it's not coming off that easily lol I keep my home keys in a small sport bag (see photo in my profile) and i never had anything stolen from me.

it plugs into the computer, but it doesn't plug into the key chain; it has a thing to attach it to the key chain actually :)

when we are at home the keys stay in the door ...when we are away they are in my small sport bag...and i've got a bunch of cute stuff attached to them lol

oh yeah hubby burns dvds to back up movies and music; since my laptop is only work laptop and i have 2 partitions i only worry abt the content

Don't count on the flash as your only back-up source. They DO wear out. They are very nice for transferring between computers. (We used to call that "Sneaker-Net" when you moved files via a floppy disk!)

They DO wear out.

also, occasionally, your dog eats them.

Your recipe document, unless it includes photos, won't take up a whole lot of room so you'll only need one.

I use them for transferring files, for keeping a back up of important files, etc.  I give them to my staff to keep necessary work documents handy as in our environment we've had our file system or network become unaccessible and have had to resort to local use of computers.  Flash drives have saved my butt more than once.

I use mine all the time.  I keep a copy of all of my homework documents, as well as any other documents I may use throughout the day (my budget, my resume, etc.)

I don't know at this point what I would do without mine.  They are so very convenient. :)

I own 4 of them. Two 1G, a 2G and a 4G. I use mine for music storage. I installed a radio in my car that uses a usb port for a flash drive. So I put all my music on them and I never have to worry about changing cds anymore. I love them and probably will own more.

I've been using them for probably four or so years.  I got my first one when I was working on my master's degree and it was a complete lifesaver.  I know have one for school and work.  I love them.
