Flatter Stomach for Swimsuit Season? Halp plz.

Quote  |  Reply

So, I'm a healthy weight for my height, and I realize that. But my major problem is this annoying stomach fat.

I want to get rid of it, so I've begun exercising, but I was wondering if there are any exercises that target stomach fat specifically?

And if you're wondering, I'm posting on here because I know someone else around my age (16) has successful techniques. Wink

First of all, congrats on beginning to exercise! That's fantastic...I've found it to not only be a great way to get into shape but also a great stress reliever as well...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's any exercise that targets fat in one specific area of the body. When you exercise, you lose fat uniformly - that is to say, for example, when you start running it's not like you lose fat from your arms, then your legs, etc. etc.

That's true. But would you say that any cardio workouts, then, are better than others?

hmmm avoid sodium laden foods and do cardio

You could still include exercises targeting your core (planks, sit-ups, etc) because although you won't be able to spot-eliminate fat, I find that strengthening those muscles will at least pull the flab a little tighter lol.

Also, I don't know if it's just me but my stomach always feels a little tighter and flatter after running, compared to the results I get from any other cardio exercise :)

You can't remove selective areas of fat, unfortunately. Your body will most likely burn the fat in the reverse-order of how it was gained. In other words, if your tummy was the first thing to get chubby, it will be the last area to get small again. :(

But losing fat all over will help. For that, cardio is the best option.

Everyone is right-the body burns overall fat, not target areas. However, targeting those specific muscles will help to build muscle if you've never worked that area and further tighten if you have. The only thing with the belly area is that if you do more building than you do burning, you may notice those pants getting tighter, because you're building muscle but haven't lost fat yet. Mostly cardio, do target core strengthening/tightening exercises. Planks, hanging abs, reverse crunches, bicycle crunches, supermans (because your core is NOT just your abs, it's you back as well!)...things like that.

Running and swimming burn the most calories, and I've noticed that runners/swimmers tend to have some amazing abs, probably because you have to use your core to do both.

But yeah, you can do ab workouts all you want, but the cardio will be what "erases" that fat so that you can see the muscles underneath that you establish through those ab workouts.  Good luck!

I'm a swimmer and having spent quite some time looking at swimmers, damn are there some amazing abs out there!

Well as others said you can't really say " I want to lose this fat area here"  but you can try and tighten up those muscles and stuff.

From what I've always been told  aerobics, swimming and walking are the best ways to get more of a flatter stomach.   A friend of mine got a firmer stomach by dieting/becoming healthy and doing yoga.  She always said she couldn't swim and walking/running tired her out.  So she did yoga for almost 2 hours every day for a month or so, and it toned her up all around.

Hi!

I started a low carb diet. I've noticed my stomach is flatter now even though I weigh more... vesus when I weighed less and ate lots of carbs.

Example. Stand up and push out your stomach as far as you can (like 2-3 inches). Normally my stomach goes out and I look alot bigger than I do when Im just standing or walking around. This is noticeable when Im sitting... My belly gets bigger...which I absolutely hate in my swimsuit!

Now that I am not eating as many carbs, when I try to push out my stomach, its already at its peak or close to it (it goes out 1/2 inch at most)... my belly has started to dissapear!
